I listened to this story and found it very good! Not only the (creepy!) plot, but also the narrator was convincing, whether he just just narrated or impersonating the various characters. I really enjoyed it!
I received an audio copy of this novel from NetGalley, and I am leaving voluntarily an honest review.
Narrated by Colin Mace ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Story by Lynda La Plante ⭐⭐⭐ 3.5
Lynda La Plante books are very captivating slow burns. I really enjoyed listening too this and am very eager to start Trial and Retribution book 2 tonight.
Lynda La Plante's writing is consistently brilliant. 'Trial & Retribution' is part police procedural, part courtroom drama, concerning the murder of a child. La Plante ramps up the tension brilliantly whilst keeping us guessing until the bitter end. I listened to the audiobook, narrated by Colin Mace. This is the first experience I've had with his work, and I was delighted to discover that Mace is one of the best voice actors I've ever heard. His skill in switching between accents and characters is exemplary, making it seem effortless. I highly recommend listening to the audio version of this book as it really elevates the experience.
Overall I enjoyed this audiobook. The storyline was good, as was the narrator. But I found the unclear breaks in the next characters part of the story made it much harder to keep track of. I had to keep mentally rewinding to try and work out who's bit of the story it was talking about. Other than that I would recommend
A truly great narration made this for me! The right tone and variation in characters which made the difference. The story is always going to be detailed and clever by Lynda La Plante but the depth of feelings comes across carefully. Thoroughly enjoyable!
Although it felt a little dated at times, I really enjoyed this gripping and gritty crime thriller which wasn't always easy to listen to due to it's grim subject matter of child abuse and murder. It moved along at a good pace and was realistically plotted. I particularly enjoyed the mix of police procedural and courtroom drama, and the feeling of seeing the investigation through from start to finish.
Colin Mace did an excellent job narrating the book, and I enjoyed the voices he gave to the characters.
This is my first book from Linda La Plante and I cannot believe I did not read anything from her before.
I guess the reason for this is that she has been so successful that a film series was created and I saw the films instead. I decided to read (or rather in this case) listen to this very famous plot as I could not remember the ending. Well I was not disappointed and once again surprise surprise, however talented the cast was on the film series, the book is much better and beautifully written. It explores realistically aspects of social life in London for both the victim sides, the police team investigating it and the legal teams prosecuting/defending it.
This book is so rich in points of reflection, it would suit a reader's group as it raises many points of discussion.
The narration aspect performed by Colin Mace is simply spectacular with much emotion and empathy.
The whole narration story experience is simply outstanding and I could not recommend this book or audiobook highly enough...
It’s been some years since I read a Lynda la Plante book and I’m pleased I requested this title as I’d forgotten just what a great writer she is. This story sweeps you straight in to a sinister scene and it then follows the hunt for a child who’s gone missing on a seedy estate.
It’s part police procedural to start with but I then found the court scenes very realistic. The drama of defence and prosecution trying to make their points is realistic and gripping. La Plante sets the scene very well. There’s a family with issues; a violent male who’s stepfather to the missing child. There’s a local weirdo who enjoys the company of children and various other key characters who cement the scene at the time of the child is missing. Some are more reliable than others and a few have a false narrative.
The characters are taken from life; vivid and realistic. From the elderly lonely lady who watches from the window of her flat, the ice cream seller with an inappropriate interest in children, the police leading the investigation and the defence lawyer and barrister. Despite the fact this isn’t a new book, it’s aged well and is timeless in the themes explored; mainly poverty, drug and alcohol addiction, social deprivation and, of course, the reasons for abduction. Very realistic.
Utterly gripping from start to finish. Is he guilty or not Linda keeps you guessing till the end. Very well plotted and good characters a must read/ listen. Colin Mace is superb narrator good accents and you know which character is speaking.
I received this audiobook from Bonnier UK and Netgalley for a review.
Absolutely brilliant!!!! I was so engrossed that I listened way into the night. Seeing a crime from both the perspective of the investigating team and the prosecution and defence teams was a real eye opener. A very cleverly woven plot with some great twists and turns, highly recommend.
Previously read this great book but was excited to listen to the audiobook version. This book bursts from the first page like a horse at the gate and never stops running. It’s a wild ride.
Great, great, great - I am giving it a lot of love...read this one! An intense, emotional and utterly compelling narrative!
