This is a compelling read by the author. Very interesting characterisation, centred around Ally Dymond a CSI, and the plot is intricately woven and filled with layers! The Devon and Cornwall setting , the twists and turns, coupled with the fast pace make this an absorbing read from start to finish. Thanks to Net Galley for my ARC.
This novel picks up a few months after ‘Breakneck Point’. It is another good story with development of the characters met in the previous novel. Ally Dymond is being very protective of her daughter and on a leave of absence from her job as a CSI but then she’s called upon to look at a new case that has hit the headlines in North Devon. That investigation runs parallel to a suspected drugs ring being investigated and takes some unpicking. Not as gripping as the first novel, but still and extremely engaging read.
Great to see another book from this author and in this series. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and seeing the characters develop further. If you enjoy police crime dramas you will enjoy these and it is refreshing to read a crime drama through the eyes of a different professional in the police instead of the usual police officer. Highly recommend this.
Having enjoyed the first book in this series, I was delighted to have been contacted by the publisher with an offer to read the second. And, boy, it didn't disappoint.
Ally Dymond is currently on compassionate leave following a string of personal and professional, shall we say, 'experiences'. However, when a local man is seemingly murdered by his own elderly mother, she quickly, and somewhat, reluctantly becomes involved ...and when another incident occurs closer to home, she has no choice but to immerse herself back into action as a CSI.
I genuinely loved this book and decided to go for the full five stars. What I love most about this book is that it's not full of ridiculous, disbelief-suspending twists that you could never see coming. It's a complex story, but well told with some brilliant characters, but also has a simplicity to the story which you can readily believe.
Thanks to HQ and Netgalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I loved Breakneck Point (Great titles!) and I felt this was even better. Better plot, more in-depth characters and better written. T Orr Monro is coming into her own as a great thriller writer. The author is a CSI herself so the forensic detail is authentic. It is well and cleverly plotted which continues to draw you into the story which takes twisted and unexpected turns and the ‘who did it’ is not revealed until the very end. I shall enjoy following this series as it continues.
Having read Breakneck Point I was pleased to be invited to read the next book in the CSI Ally Diamond series.Such a clever book that kept me guessing all the way through .Fast paced with lots of twists and turns .I love Ally Diamond such a strong character trying to recover from a horrific attack and not sure if she wants to return to work as a CSI .Thoroughly enjoyed this book and look forward to reading the next one in the series .Thank you to NetGalley for my ARC.
I can wholeheartedly recommend this book!
There’s so many plot twists that it’s impossible to guess the ending.
The second book in the CSI Ally Dymond series by T Orr Munro set in Devon.
Having enjoyed the first book "Breakneck Point" so much I was really looking forward to this publication, but did harbour doubts as to whether Ms Munro could follow up strongly with a second publication.
suffice to say, I needn't have doubted her ability to pull this off.
Right from the opening scenes of an elderly woman wandering on the moors, dressed only in a nightdress, covered in blood and carrying a knife, I was reeled in and wanted to keep on reading.
Although Ally Dymond is officially not working as a CSI presently she is requested to assist the local police with their investigation.
I won't spoil the storyline, but there were a number of twists and turns along the way, a number of which I certainly didn't see coming.
Keep up the good work and here's to number three.
Thanks to Tina and NetGalley for allowing me to read Slaughterhouse Farm before the publication date.
Picking up from Breakneck Point, the first book in the series, it is a well-crafted story which weaves the strands of the investigation into the murder of Gabe Narracott with the personal lives of the Naracott family and CSI Ally Dymond.
The author successfully misdirects the reader throughout the book, before finally revealing the truth.
The book is about the investigation into a murder. However there is an underlying thread which is split between the social and cultural environment of the 1960s/1970s and the current day, highlighting the difference in how society views an unmarried mother to how the biological father is perceived.
Although Miriam and Ally are more than a generation apart, there are some parallels between their lives, each having experienced highly judgemental treatment by their families.
The difference is how they were able to react to that.
When the naïve teenage Miriam became pregnant by the philandering Ralph, her employer’s son, he offered her money towards a termination and then walked away to continue his life, leaving Miriam to endure the wrath of her parents. Although she miscarried, the family forced her to marry a man who was unaware of her past, leaving her dreams of an education and a loving marriage behind.
Ally was adopted at a young age. When she became pregnant with Megan, her adoptive parents abandoned Ally to fend for herself, whilst Megan’s father, Julian, continued his studies and went on to have a successful career.
Despite the difficulties, Ally was able to carve a successful career for herself although she would go on to suffer an abusive marriage to Sean.
What a great read, loved this book, and could not put it down. It was a really easy read, and every chapter end invited you to start the next.I thought her first book Breakneck Point was really good, but this her second book was even better.the storyline was quite complex but well constructed and I had no idea who the murderer was until the final pages. It was great to see Ally and Penny and Megan return, and how their character’s had developed. There was reference to the previous storyline, but this could easily be read as a stand alone.
Slaughterhouse Farm by T. Orr Munro, is a solid, multi-layered mystery plot with tantalizing sub-plots that will keep you guessing from start to finish!.
Late one night, at around 11 p.m., Miriam was found by tourists wandering about on Exmoor about a mile from the farm. She was holding a bloody kitchen knife, and had blood on her nightshirt. The blood on nightshirt matched the blood of her son Gabe, who had been murdered that night. Miriam is the prime and only suspect in the crime, but when CSI Ally Dymond is invited in on the case just to give thoughts, she initially rejects the invitation because she on compassionate leave. That is until she watches the news on TV that night and notices an important clue to the crime scene that everyone else seems to miss.
This is an intricate weaving between Munro’s first suspenseful offering in the series, Breakneck Point, with this thrilling mystery Slaughterhouse Farm - it’s brilliantly woven together in seamless perfection.
My thanks to NetGalley, T. Orr Munro, and the publisher for an ARC in exchange for my honest opinion. All opinions are my own.
I was looking forward to reading this second novel by T Orr Munro. The plot and writing style was good with characters to like & dislike. The protagonist, CSI Ally Dymond, I disliked.. But Ally is fiesty, intelligent and forensically aware, and is an excellent and experienced CSI and admired by her colleagues. She enjoys her job. I enjoyed the forensic detail in the book.
Ally is on compassion leave & not yet returned to work. She is hiding a secret.
I enjoyed the witty dialogue & character development. The plot didn't sit well with me. It was disjointed and I was disheartened.. I enjoyed 50% of this book, then I struggled to finish.
I WANT TO THANK NETGALLEY FOR THE OPPORTUNITY OF READING AN ARC OF THIS BOOK FOR AN HONEST REVIEW
Four point five stars for this book from T Orr Munro. Having read Breakneck Point I was happy to read and review this for HQ Stories and it proved just the distraction I needed in hospital.
It begins with an old woman, Miriam Narracott, found wandering on the moor at night by some tourists. She is carrying a knife and on closer inspection is covered in blood. Miriam is unable to explain herself to the police so they must investigate what happened without her help.
CSI Ally Dymond is on leave and some what ostracised by her colleagues (see book 1 when her daughter is attacked) but a new D I, freshly arrived from London calls her into the case, anxious to have a fresh pair of eyes on it and knowing she is not part of the old boys network as she was happy to speak out against inappropriate behaviour. Against her better judgement Ally becomes more and more involved with the case which seems to grow exponentially as she gets involved.
Some very clever and devious plotting from the author, with gritty and realistic characters and a great sense of place. Fast paced and twisty and absorbing reading.
With thanks to Netgalley, HQ Stories and T Orr Munro for an advanced copy in return for an honest review.
Exciting new novel by a new author to me. I really enjoyed reading this book. It had lots of twists and turns. An exciting plot to get your teeth into. It was very well written
I enjoyed reading this. It's not a police procedural, but centres around CSI Ally Dymond and her community life in a Devon village. It follows on from the last book but can be read as a stand alone. There's lots of drama and twists and turns and I am looking forward to the next installment.
Thank you to NetGalley and HQ for my approval to read and reivew this book.
This is the gripping second novel in the CSI Ally Dymond series. CSI Ally Dyomnd is on compassionate leave and due to return to her CSI work in about 3 weeks following last year's incident with her daughter. She is approached by the new DI Harriet Moore to help with the investigation of Slaughterhouse Farm as Mariam Narrocott has been found at night on Exmoor with a knife in her hand. It turns out that her son, Gabe, is the victim. This is a twisty, gripping story with a well written story and full of twists and turns that will keep you guessing to the end. I will be recommending this book to my fellow book friends. Roll on Book 3!!
Ally Dymond is still on compassionate leave from her job as a police CSI when a new senior officer asks for her help. Although she really doesn’t want to get involved, she finds herself drawn into the case. This is a well plotted book, with some interesting characters, and has a really authentic feel to it,. With plenty of intrigue and action to get stuck into, it covers themes that are all too present in real life, as well as exploring how both Ally and her daughter Megan are coping with what happened at Breakneck Point in the previous book. There are several side stories going on, which pull you in nicely, along with more back story about Miriam, an elderly murder suspect. Totally unexpected ending. I look forward to book 3 in this series to see where Ally goes next.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book
I really enjoyed the first book featuring CSI Ally Dymond (Breakneck Point) so was eager to read this.
T Orr Munro writes a good crime thriller, Ally Dymond is a civilian CSI in North Devon.
There's an involved plot, plenty of characters, character development, suspects and subplots and convincing local detail. It does a lot of things well.
If you enjoy the plot rich, character rich novels of William Shaw and Ellie Griffiths you should have a look at this series. There's a nice little community of characters building up and I'll be interested in where Ally Dymond's journey goes from here.
Thanks to Netgalley and HQ
This story was so well written and captures you hook, line and sinker straight away. Ally is a csi, she’s on leave because her daughter was groomed and nearly killed by a man whom no one else would investigar, ally took it further and saved her daughter. Now she’s considering leaving her job, she’s overprotective of her daughter due to past events and she avoids any chance of a love life.. then a new DI asks for her advice, her help and ultimately ally can’t stay away from her true calling
Solid Mystery..
The second in the CSI Ally Dymond series and a deadly mystery for a DI turns to a call for assistance on Ally, presently on compassionate leave. It seems that her local knowledge will be indispensable- despite, as a character, her apparent need for control. As the mystery deepens old secrets may well be revealed. A carefully crafted cast and a compelling and credible narrative makes this an immersive tale with a solid mystery to unravel. Fast moving and engaging.
