I absolutely loved this book. I was pulled in from page one and fell in love with Mickey and her friends and family. Mickey writes content for a magazine--at least, she did until she gets fired. Her Blackness contributes significantly to the firing, but the magazine hires a Black woman to replace her. Mickey is both furious and sapped for energy. She stays at home on the couch for a bit, then writes a letter, opening up about her experiences there. Meanwhile, her partner Lex is starting to get irritated with Mickey's laziness, and Mickey decides to leave. She goes home to find her old best friend, family, and The One That Got Away. Now Mickey has to reckon with her life back in New York and the world she came from. This is a pretty quiet book compared to some of the other stuff I read, but no less compelling. Mickey's strength and character development drive the book. I can't recommend it enough!

Homebodies
by Tembe Denton-Hurst
She’s stayed quiet for too long.
Now it’s time to speak her truth.
I loved Mickey! She is a black woman, but a powerhouse when she was fired from a publishing company to weed out blacks. She did call them out! (thank God)
Homebodies by Tembe Denton-Hurst is a novel I loved. I cheered for her as she made her own way in the world, on her own terms.
Tembe Denton-Hurst will inspire women and women of color to push back and find their voice.

I absolutely loved this book! Tembe wrote this book with such passion and with such an important topic that everyone should read about.
Mickey was a writer for a Magazine in New York, this was until she was fired. Her life spiralled into confusion and she needed to get out of the city to sort herself out and decide what she really wanted.
Mickey is such a powerful character in this book, Tembe really portrayed her strength and helped portray a story of what many people go through everyday.
I was hooked from page 1 and found this very easy to read. I will definitely be recommending this to friends and family! A huge four stars from me!

Go, Mickey! That was what I shouted aloud to myself at the end of this powerful debut novel from
Tembe Denton-Hurst.
Mickey goes through so much in this story in order to learn to unconditionally love and celebrate herself. She is a Black woman in a big body and her brilliance is undermined every step of the way- most especially when she is laid off from her job unexpectedly. Her girlfriend, Lex, on the other hand is thriving in her career and moving on up in the world which causes a rift in the relationship. This leads to Mickey going back home to stay with her grandmother where she reencounters an ex from the past and confronts some wounds that were left unhealed. I found myself feeling so protective of Mickey when she reconnects with Tee. As a reader I could feel how much she longed for Tee's acceptance and to feel desired by her. It broke my heart when she finds out some hard truths about Tee both regarding their past fling in school and some present secrets that are kept.
In the end, Mickey embraces her own power and uses her voice to fight back against the inequity she had to deal with at her previous job. This eventually results in her going viral and being asked to come on a very popular morning show to share her story. I'm so glad that in the end Mickey stopped looking for others to validate her brilliance and could see it for herself. She fully owns that power in the end and I loved that for her.
Thank you so much to the author and publisher for the e-arc copy!
