Sinister and gripping…… A complex, suspenseful plot with tension so thick that it felt palpable. Wonderfully-developed characters with depth and substance. I was immediately drawn in and held captive from beginning to end.

dude. y'all. no. i was reading through the reviews (on goodreads) prior to starting this book and they had me a little scared. i haven't read any of hannah's previous books yet so i know nothing about her writing style apart from what i've seen in this, but this book was good. it was a whole journey, it felt familiar and yet new all at once, and i enjoyed it. i loved the characters, i felt the pain and the love and the betrayal, i was as confused and weary as they were up until the very end, and it was just so easy to pick this up again when i found time to read. and that's really just all i look for in books: something that flows well, that doesn't put me in a reading slump. and this seemed to do just that.

i look forward to book 2!!!

Absolutely loved this, 10/10!! Courtly intrigue, complex characters and death magic, yes please! A bi disaster prince, a broody monk and a necromancer who just wants to get her shit together, this was amazing - highly recommend!
