The is my first book by the author and its definitely not going to be the last. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.
Such a Good Domestic Thriller,
I just wish there wasn't a prologue with such a reveal. It would have been one hell of a surprise it coming in later on .
Fast Paced ✔️
Deception ✔️
Betrayal ✔️
Revenge ✔️
Twist ✔️
Getting to the end I was holding my breath, hoping I don't get disappointed, and guess what I wasn't.
The epilogue is the icing on the cake.
This story satisfied me.
BLOG TOUR REVIEW
Review for 'The Doctor's Wife' by Daniel Hurst.
Read and reviewed via NetGalley for Daniel Hurst, Bookouture publishers and Bookouture anonymous
Publication date 31st January 2023.
This is the first book I have read by this author. It most definitely won't be my last!!
I was originally drawn to this book by its stunning eye catching cover and intriguing sounding synopsis and title. The synopsis stated that this book is 'From the number one bestselling author of The Passenger, an absolutely gripping psychological thriller packed with jaw-dropping twists that will keep you reading late into the night. If you love Behind Closed Doors, Gone Girl and The Housemaid, you’ll be hooked on The Doctor’s Wife.' I am a huge fan of 'Gone Girl' and 'The Housemaid' so am looking forward to seeing if this lives up to this statement. I must admit I was also biased due to the publisher being Bookouture. I have yet to read a book published by Bookouture that I haven't enjoyed. Hopefully this won't be the first... Watch this space! (Written before I started reading the book).
This novel consists of a prologue, 35 chapters and an epilogue. The chapters are short to medium in length so easy to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!
This book is based in Aberness and Manchester, England 🏴. The bonus for me of books that are partly or fully based in the UK is that I live in the UK and have sometimes visited places mentioned in the book which makes it easier to picture.
This book is written in first person perspective and the protagonists are Fern Devlin and Doctor Drew Devlin. The benefits of books written in first person perspective are as long as they are well written it makes you feel that you are being spoken to by the protagonist and it can create more of a bond between yourselves and them. If there are several protagonists you also get to see more of what is going on.
AN ABSOLUTELY INTRIGUING, THOUGHT PROVOKING, UNPUTDOWNABLE HEART RACING AND EXPLOSIVE BOOK THAT WILL KEEP YOU UP LATE AT NIGHT UNTIL YOU TURN THE LAST PAGE!!
Wow!!! This book is fantastically written and had me hook, line and sinker from beginning to end. The descriptions were so in depth and vivid that the hair on my arms was standing on the ends and my heart was pounding throughout. The synopsis, title and cover were perfect for the storyline.
I absolutely loved this unique page turning explosive page turner. I was absolutely absorbed throughout this psychological thriller. It is filled with tension, suspense, lies, secrets, deceit, romance, love, aand omg the twist!!! I DID NOT see the twists coming at all and there were more than one!!! Just when I think everything had been worked out and things were settling down BOOM there was another bombshell!! A MASSIVE CONGRATULATIONS Daniel!! It is getting harder and harder to shock me but by God you did that over and over and over!!! What an ending!!! One of the most gripping unputdownable nerve wracking psychological thrillers I have EVER read!!! You have one hell of a talent and I cannot wait to get hold of your previous and future books in this series. I cannot remember the last time I was so hooked by a book but you managed that big time!!! I loved that the book is told from Fern and Drew's perspectives and each of their stories/chapters were perfectly weaved together to show us everything that is going on and how each of them are thinking and feeling throughout. The storyline is filled with crime, shocks, suspense, tension, deceit, and murder. There was so much going on and it was very fast paced and kept me on the edge of my seat throughout. This book is absolutely addictive and I read it in one sitting. I absolutely loved the cliff hanging explosive twist at the end that leaves you wanting more! It kept me on the edge of my seat, biting my nails with my heart absolutely pounding throughout especially at the end! I really am looking forward to the next book by this extremely talented author. A gripping, all consuming addictive series.
It is set over multiple time lines. When books show what has happened in the past and what is happening in the present I find it really helps the reader (if it is well done) understand why things are happening and what has lead to the present activities and decisions. It also shows the bigger picture.
Clear your schedule before you start as I read this in one sitting as I could not put it down!! Practically every chapter ended on a cliff hanger so no way could I put it down!! Absolutely hooked!! I would absolutely love to see this turned into a movie!!!!
This is one of the few books that I have listened 100% on Audiobook. If I listen to a book on audiobook I usually also read the physical book between but for the second time I listened to the whole book and I was impressed! I must say a HUGE congratulations to the narrators Sarah Durham and David Wayman who both did an amazing job bringing this story and the characters to life. I have previously listened to Liz Lawler's 'The Nurse's Secret' on audiobook that was also narrated by Sarah Durham and I would highly recommend listening to or reading it as it is an another fantastic page turner from another great author!! I would listen to it in the car and while walking at any opportunity. I'm not only looking forward to reading more books by Daniel but also to listening to more books narrated by both Sarah and David!
.
The characters were all strong and realistic and thanks to Daniel's absolutely fantastic writing skills and Sarah Dunham and David Wayman's amazing narrative skills they all come to life when you are turning the pages. My heart went out to Fern at the start whose life absolutely crumbled around her when she discovered her husband is being unfaithful. However, my feelings towards her did start to change rather quickly and I did find her to be extremely manipulative. I absolutely hated Doctor Drew who was a horrible piece of work. The way he treated Fern was disgusting and the way he thought he was God's gift to woman made my blood boil. The fact that he neglected one of his patients to get his own way was disgraceful. My feelings changed towards Alice Richardson and Rory Richardson throughout the book going from feeling sorry for one, finding one a disgrace, having respect to being disgusted. It is hard to say too much about the characters as I am worried I will give too much away and I really don't want to spoil it for future readers. Regardless of whether you love or hate the characters they all worked perfectly together to make this an addictive and explosive storyline!!!
Welcome to my favourite author Daniel! An absolute must read author!! I cannot wait to read all your previous and future books!! Here's to your next success 🥂
Overall an absolutely heart racing, suspense filled, unputdownable addictive page turner psychological thriller filled with twists!!

The Doctor’s wife knew he’d had an affair when they moved to a small town to start over. She also knew that the other woman had already moved to that town with her husband. Now that the two couples are interacting together, what is going to happen next?
I wasn’t completely on board with Daniel Hurst’s previous book (The Couple in the Cabin) but I wanted to give it another try. This book hooked me in from the start and kept my interest almost until the very end. I didn’t love the epilogue but that was only just the last 10 minutes. Recommend!
*Thanks to Bookoutre and NetGalley for this advance audiobook copy for review.
Thank you NetGalley, Bookouture and Daniel Hurst for an advanced copy of “The Doctor’s Wife”. This is my second book by this author and this one blew me away, I finished it in two sittings!
Fern and Drew have been married for years and lived in Manchester. Drew wants to move to a small village of Arberdeen where Drew will be the village doctor. Things are not as they may seem, Drew is not what he tries to portray and Fern is not the naive doting wife she seems to be. What secrets do they have and how will they be revealed?
This story starts out at a fast pace and continues at a fast pace throughout. It sucked me in from the beginning and kept my attention. I will definitely be looking for more books written by Daniel Hurst!
But things are not as they seem. Fern is not as naive as she seems. They all have their secrets and especially Drew has a reason for the move.
Dr. Drew Devlin and his wife Fern move to a remote village to get away from their busy life in Manchester, or so they tell their neighbors and each other. As they settle in, we learn from both Drew and Fern what reasons truly motivated them to move, what they expect to have happen, and what they plan to do. Fern and Drew are keeping secrets from each other, but they are happy to let us, the readers, in on their secrets.
The story is well written and narrated. I enjoyed the cheeky tone of both Fern and Drew, who are both plotting against each other. The epilogue is the icing on the cake. Very enjoyable twist!
I look forward to more books by Daniel Hurst.
With thanks to the author, Daniel Hurst, Bookouture Audio, and Netgalley for the audio ARC in exchange for
an honest review.
It should be a fresh start for Fern and her husband Drew when they move to a quiet village. Drew will be the new local GP and Fern will be able to relax in the country. But all is not as it appears. Fern knows that Drew had an affair in the city and she knows they’re only moving now so he can be closer to his lover. She’s hoping he will decide that their marriage is more important than their affair and she’s willing to give him another chance. But it’s not long before the detestable Drew is up to his old tricks and Fern decides to take matters into her own hands. Drew is a character with no redeeming qualities and readers will be cheering for Fern, but it turns out that Fern has a few surprises of her own. A fun, twisted novel of revenge
Following on from listening to The Couple In The Cabin which I loved, anything on this writer's list is now fair game for listening to!
Yet again, I'm totally impressed.
Gripping story, plenty of characters that I didn't always like, but wanted to be there (or be killed!) and an ending that left me wanting more. No spoilers, but there could be more until a certain person is caught!
I'm here for it and hopeful it'll happen!
I want to thank the author, NetGalley and Bookouture Audio
for providing me the opportunity to listen to this new book for my honest review.
Doctor Drew convinces his wife, Fern, move with him to a small town to follow the woman he had an affair with. He thinks that his wife has no idea, but she may actually have more secrets than him. I loved how the book started with the finding of the dead body and then goes back to set the scene. There were multiple options for people who wanted the doctor dead, but will the truth come out?
While I did enjoy the book and the character development, I felt that some of the ending was a little far fetched.
When the first scene of a book is the narrator describing the dead body of her husband, I am almost always guaranteed to be hooked. We know from the beginning who the body is, but we are left with questions - who committed this crime, and what is the motive? Who would want this charming member of the community dead?
Addictive, absorbing and gripping from the beginning, this murder mystery is full of deceit, secrets and lies. Told via the viewpoints of Fern and Drew over a dual timeline, the background of this couple is revealed as the book goes on.
The suspects, Fern, Alice and Rory, all have reasons for wanting Dr Drew dead, making this a classic who-done-it. The shocking conclusion is entertaining and could have gone either way!
Unfortunately, there are a few unrealistic scenarios within this storyline, the unethical behaviour of a particular character being one. (No spoilers here!) A couple of times, I found parts too far-fetched for my preferences.
However, overall this is a great read, and I am still a massive fan of Hurst. I will certainly be reading more of his work in the future.
It's a classic case of He said. She said. Drew is a doctor. His wife is Fern. They are not the most likable narrators I have ever met, but they sure are entertaining! They both have secrets. Who knows more than the other? As the reader we are in the know. You might think if all the telling happens throughout the book, what is left to learn? Don't worry. Daniel Hurst keeps some tricks up his sleeve for the Epilogue. I want to thank my GR friend MarilynW for bringing this book to my attention. It was quite a captivating read. If you are looking for a popcorn thriller, grab your bowl of snacks and enjoy this one.
Thank you to Bookouture Audio and NetGalley for an audio ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I will definitely be looking up all of Daniel Hursts books. This was a thriller I couldn’t put down. Such a crazy twist I did not see coming! An affair gone wrong… or is it?
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.
You want to add this to your list!
After two big flops, and feeling like I was in the worst reading slump, this book more than delivered. The Doctor's Wife is the story about Drew, the doctor, and his wife, Fern. Due to working very long hours, out of nowhere Drew suggests to his wife that they move to a small town where the demands on him will be much less and they'll be able to spend more time together. Unfortunately, Drew has an ulterior motive for the move, but Fern's not exactly the oblivious and innocent wife Drew thinks she is.
This was such a fun read full of twists. I will admit it was a bit predictable at times and I did see some of it coming, but getting there was entirely too fun to care. The narrators did a phenomenal job bringing the characters to life. And the epilogue was AWESOME! I thoroughly enjoyed it!
Thank you to Daniel Hurst, Bookature Audio and NetGalley for the ALC copy of this audiobook in exchange for my honest opinion.
Story very well written, full of surprises, great world building, fascinating characters, & captivating plot. All highlighted by the great narration.
Thank you to the publishers and Netgalley for the ARC.
This was my first read from Daniel Hurst and it certainly won't be my last!
The Doctor's Wife had such an incredibly simple premise but I felt the need to force myself to sleep halfway through this book. If I had started reading earlier in the evening, I would have easily read this book in one sitting.
I'd love to know how the author feels about Fern because I absolutely love her. One of the reasons I loved this book so much is that there was no straightforward "victim" or "perpetrator". Everyone was varying shades in between.
I have another Hurst on my Kindle that I bought but haven't read yet, so I'll definitely be starting it very soon!
The Doctor's wife is a dual POV/timeline thriller about Dr.Drew, a cheating doctor with questionable ethics, and his wife, Fern. They move to a small village from Manchester after Drew and Alice (the other woman) have an affair. Drew thinks they are starting anew and that his secret is still hidden from his wife. Drew thought wrong. Alice and her husband, Rory end up becoming "friends" with the doctor and his wife after they relocate to the village as they rekindle their affair. Fern and Rory, devastated by their spouses infidelity, choose some drastic measures to find justice for their situation.
I really enjoyed this audiobook! Very interesting, not the usual twists and turns. I really appreciated that it didn't follow the typical "cookie cutter" plot outline that we see in so many thrillers. A very fun read! The epilogue at the end was a great final twist of the knife! Highly recommend!
Thank you to Daniel Hurst, Bookature Audio and Netgalley for the ARC copy of this audiobook in exchange for my honest feedback.

Daniel Hurst is the author of several bestselling psychological thrillers, including 'The Passenger,' 'We Used To Live Here,' and 'Til Death Do Us Part.' His books have been the #1 Psychological Thrillers in the UK and Australia and regularly feature in the Amazon Top 100 charts.
“A person can never be too careful.”
Fern isn’t excited to be moving t a small village. But her husband, Drew, is ecstatic about the opportunity. He sells the idea by saying it will give him a better work/life balance. Which Fern knows is a lie. All Drew does is lie.
WELL. I devoured this book in print, and when I saw it available as audio had to give it a listen. How does a book get even better the second time? I finished reading this book and the next day started listening to the audiobook, and I was still captivated and held hostage by this story.
The narrators were fantastic. The tones and delivery were spot-on and brought these characters to life. David Wayman captured the pompousness of Drew so beautifully. Sarah Durham delivered perfectly as Fern. I found the balance so well done.
I loved how devious and dark this story was. How this house of cards was built and destroyed was so clever. And the way the twists were dropped left my jaw on the floor.
Daniel Hurst can weave quite the tale, and the man is not afraid to let his readers free fall into the chaos, especially when they least expect it.
I highly recommend this audiobook. Everything is stellar, the writing, the performance, the delivery, and the impact of the twists. This was fantastic.
I am looking forward to Daniel’s next novel!
This is the first book I have read by this author and I liked it so much I'm going to have to take a peek at his other books! I enjoyed the narrators voices used to tell the story. The woman who played Fern had a very pleasant voice and the man who played Dr. Drew sounded like Jude Law! This story drew me in from very start and I didn't want to stop listening to it. I loved Fern's cunningness and sarcastic humor. Dr. Drew on the other hand was a disgusting twit. Do doctors in England practice the Hippocratic oath? He was a very immature man and his obsession was ridiculous. I had to say that the last couple of twists at the very end of the story had me almost changing my rating from five star to four-star. I just didn't feel that those twists needed to be added into the story. I won't go into detail because it'll spoil the whole story so you'll need to read or listen to to find out what I'm talking about. Because of the fact that this story kept me engaged from the very beginning is what made me decide to give it five stars. Those last couple of twists, though... people can go either way, depending upon what they like to read or listen to! Thank you to Bookouture Audio and NetGalley for this ARC!
Thank you Net Galley for an audio ARC of The Doctors Wife by Daniel Hurst. This author never fails to entertain me! This story is about a Doctor, his wife and his mistress. Great narration too!
I really enjoy reading about fictional marriages that make my real-life marriage look like a walk in the park on a sunny day.
The Doctor’s Wife grabbed my attention right away, with a dead body is discovered in the first few pages of the book. The story was told through multiple POVs, alternated between husband and wife, and eventually uncovered what led up to the gruesome scene unveiled in the prologue. As I listened I was anxious to find out who was in on which secrets, and believe me, there were a LOT of secrets.
I’m giving this book a 3 star rating because while I enjoyed the story, I didn’t feel particularly connected to the characters. The narration was well done and the audiobook was entertaining and easy to follow, but I wasn’t blown away.
Thank you to NetGalley, Bookouture, and author Daniel Hurst for allowing me to read “The Doctor’s Wife” in exchange for my review. All opinions are my own.
The Doctor's Wife is a gripping domestic thriller with layer upon layer of twists.
GP Drew and his wife move from Manchester to a small village near the border between England and Scotland. Ostensibly for a better work/life balance, but actually because Drew is desperate to follow his mistress and resume their affair.
The prologue reveals the discovery of a body and we then follow the perspectives of husband and wife across dual timelines as the intrigue unfolds.
Another gripping, twisty and suspenseful read from one of my favourite authors and the narrators do a great job of bringing the characters and action to life.
