Another superb novel by Julia Heaberlin. Beautifully crafted with perfect observational detail and a story that reels you into the life of a brilliant lady with a conflicting mind. Vivvy is an astrophysicist, studying far away worlds with a depth of knowledge far beyond most of us. She is also psychic, a gift from her late mother. Being of scientific mind this gift should be dismissed but Vivvy finds it impossible when she has already saved someone from certain death due to a vision. After her mother’s natural death Vivvy returns home to deal with the aftermath and finds herself embroiled in finding a girl who went missing many years ago. With sceptics and believers alike all pressuring her she becomes involved in a dangerous sequence of events that threaten her own existence. Carefully conceived characters add depth to the book and with long held secrets slowly revealed in addition to many a twist this excellent story winds it’s way to a satisfying conclusion.
Vivvy Bouchet, respected scientist and reluctant psychic, saved a boy's life after a premonition when she was a child. Now a Texas police officer, he convinces Vivvy to help him solve the high-profile cold case of missing three-year-old Lizzie Solomon, who disappeared from her home in broad daylight. A body was never found, but the child's mother, Nicolette, is in prison for the disappearance, loudly proclaiming her innocence.
When a popular podcaster hears of Vivvy's involvement in the case, his conspiracy theories about the missing child, and Vivvy's background, have an army of fans hanging on every dangerous word.
But when it becomes clear there may be a kidnapper - or killer - still on the loose, Vivvy knows there's more to lose than her reputation.
I enjoyed Night Will Find You, but with some caveats. I found the rightwing podcaster side plot needlessly distracting; likewise with the storyline involving Vivvy’s love for her old friend (and sister’s husband). At times the plot seemed too thick, but frequently with things that weren’t advancing either the story or the character development.
That said, Heaberlin is a brilliant writer who ramps up the tension fantastically. While I didn’t love this as much as Black-Eyed Susans or We Are All The Same In The Dark, it’s still worth a read.
When she was ten, Vivvy Bouchet saved a boy's life by making an impossible prediction. Ever since, she has been in a life-long battle between the urgent voices in her head and the science. Now a brilliant astrophysicist, she wants nothing more than to be left alone with the stars in the Big End country of Texas. But the boy she saved, now a Fort Worth cop, has always believed she is psychic - even though she won't say that word out loud. He's begging her to help solve the high=profile cold case of a little girl who disappeared in broad daylight from the kitchen of her old Victorian house. A body was never found, and her mother sits in prison still loudly proclaiming her innnocence. Vivvy reluctantly agrees to try.
Vivvy Bouchet is an astrophysicist. She doesn't like the term, but she has the ability to speak to dead people. She once helped to save the life of her friend Mike. Mike is now a policeman and has asked Vivvy to help solve a high-profile cold case. The pace is on the slow side, but it's filled with well-developed characters. I liked the authors writing style. The story is descriptively written. There's plenty of twists. This is a compelling read that has a haunting atmosphere.
I would like to thank #NetGalley #MichaelJoseph #PenguinRandomHouse and the author #JulieHeaberlin for my ARC of #NightWillFindYou in exchange for an honest review.
This gripped me from the beginning. I just couldn't put this down.
The element of psychics could have gone either way. But here it worked for me. It didn't feel overwhelming.
Vivvy was an interesting character. How she felt like she had to protect Mike all these years. Her relationship with her sister due to this.
I did partly wish that some of those side stories with them didn't happen. By the end it didn't really mean much.
Speaking of the end I partly dislike it just because I wanted a 2nd book where they try figure out what happened to the other missing girl mentioned.
This book was, for me, five stars all the way, but if it was any way wavering between say 4 and 5 it would have smashed the five simply for the fact that it references my current favourite band - The Turnpike Troubadours - which I am sad to say no one else I know in the UK has even heard of... yes I am trying to rectify that! None of that has anything else to do with the book but I really wanted to highlight it on my mission to give them more exposure!
So Vivvy Bouchet, as a ten year, old hounded a boy and, in doing so, saved his life when a perilous prediction almost came true. Since that time she has fought a battle between the voices she hears and the science she so loves. When we first meet her she is on hiatus from her astrophysicist job in the middle of nowhere analyzing the stars as she has returned home due to her mother's death. The boy she saved has grown up to be a cop and he has "utilised" her skills on occasion to assist with their cases. But nothing prepares her for what they want from her next. A cold case of a missing young girl. The mother in jail even though no body was ever found. The father in limbo waiting for his baby to come home. And a sceptical cop running the investigation. If that wasn't bad enough for her, once word is out that she is "assisting the police" she hits the radar of Bubba Guns, a popular conspiracy theorist with quite a following, and is dragged into the limelight she has desperately tried to avoid...
Like I said I loved this book. I took to Vivvy right from the start. Her grit and tenacity above everything just made my heart sing. Especially when she was mocked and tested. Even more so when her relationship with sister and her husband was laid bare. And as her past was drip fed into the narrative further fleshing her out. Simply divine. And then the "relationship" with the cop running the investigation, and how that all played out. The fights, the banter, the gamesmanship. Brilliant.
And the mystery when solved - no spoilers - was perfect, and wholly believable. Honestly this book was definitely the real deal. And a well worthy addition to an already well impressive back catalogue, the majority of which I have read and enjoyed, the rest on my tbr.
My thanks go to the Publisher and Netgalley for the chance to read this book.
Julia Heaberlin is a writer who can invariably be relied upon to deliver the goods, and this time she's knocked it out of the park. In Vivvy Boucher, Heaberlin has created a character who is fascinating, multi-faceted and has an enormously readable story.
As a child, Vivvy made a prediction that saved the life of a boy from her neighbourhood, Mike. He grew up to be her best friend and a police officer and is convinced that Vivvy is psychic - though as a brilliant scientist, she herself hates that term.
Now married to Vivvy's sister, Brig (Brigid), Mike pushes his sister-in-law into helping him with a cold case involving the disappearance of a little girl from a locked home, for which her mother - based on circumstantial evidence - remains incarcerated, despite continuing to protest her innocence. Mike's fellow officer Jesse Sharp however is far from happy at Vivvy's role in a case that, in his view, should be limited to the efforts of police personnel.
After a shock jock media personality, Bubba Guns, finds out about Vivvy's involvement in the case, he begins to spin an ever-wilder series of conspiracy theories for his overly engaged listeners, forcing Vivvy to defend herself and ratcheting up tensions.
The result is a gripping story, one which has little difficulty in holding on to the reader's attention. I loved this book. And I say this as someone who normally hates books with a paranormal element, even when I like the writer concerned. The talented Julia Heaberlin has done it again! Five stars for this one.
Texas author Julia Heaberlin offers readers character-centric thrills with her latest standalone set in her home state. Vivvy Bouchet is an astrophysicist searching for what others haven’t seen – artificial light in the depths of the universe – but it’s a different kind of insight her brother-in-law Mike is looking for. A cop who owes his life to Vivvy from when they were young, he believes in her psychic abilities, and hopes they’ll help crack the cold case of a missing child. Except is it a case when the mother is already in prison for murder?
When a popular right-wing podcaster spews conspiracy theories and revs up his audience about Vivvy, her scientific career and the lives of those she loves are put in jeopardy. Meanwhile she’s battling complicated feelings about Mike, and the lead detective Jesse Sharp.
With Night Will Find You, Heaberlin again delivers an intelligent thriller built on rich characterisation, a wonderfully evoked sense of place, and a unique heroine who’s flawed and formidable. A very good read.

I had a great title reading Night Will Find You. Like many books the title, cover and the blurb drew me in. Vivvy is a great character, complex, real, and so well written I felt like I really got to know her. I’m sceptic about psychics helping to solve crimes so it took me a while to get into the flow of the story and stop rolling my eyes. This is a complex, well-written thriller with some interesting twists. I thought it was great.
When Vivvy was ten, she saved the life of a boy after having a vision that he was in danger. Now, Vivvy is an astrophysicist who wants to forget about her special abilities but can’t shake them off. The boy who she saved when he was younger is now a cop who believes Vivvy is psychic although, Vivvy doesn’t like that word, and brings her onto cases to help solve them. The case involves a missing child who’s mother is in prison for her murder, although her body was never found. Vivvy gets caught up in the case and is determined to find out what happened to little Lizzie.
At first, I wasn’t too sure about the psychic aspect to this book going into it, but that actually turned out to be my favourite part! I’ve read a lot of thrillers over the years, but none quite like this. It was extremely fascinating reading this from Vivvy’s perspective as a psychic, who is also helping out on a missing child case. She gets visions of things that nobody else can see and is vital in the search for the young missing girl.
In my opinion, this would make an amazing series and I would love to read more books following Vivvy and her helping solve cases with her special abilities. I loved all the other characters in here too and would love to read more about them. This was an incredible, unique thriller that definitely left me wanting more! Hopefully the author will write more in this series but if not this was an incredible stand alone!
Thank you so much to Netgalley for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I forced myself through the first 30 pages. I really am loving it but the unreadable state of the ARC I have received is forcing me to put this down.
I'll definitely be purchasing Night Will Find You when it's published so I can actually read it.
I loved her first book The Black Eyed Susan's and I was really hoping for more of the same. I am glad to say another page Turner for me. If you want a highly original, nail biting and very intelligent thriller then this is the book for you. No way can you read just one more page or one more chapter I promise you it will not happen. I was completely immersed in the tale that was unfolding. It all starts off with a missing person be ready for a real rollercoaster of a read. Highly recommended.
Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC.
Complicated but persevere and you will be rewarded,
Complex story.
Will keep you guessing to the end.
An atmospheric mystery with lots of things to digest, I enjoyed as much as I understood, great characters and a great ending made up for this 'wordy' book
An interesting start to the book, Vivvy Bouchet is an astrophysicist who also has psychic abilities.
Vivvy returns to her hometown for the funeral of her mother. While there a local detective, Mike, asks for her help in a cold case. Vivvy apparently saved Mike's life many years before and he has great faith in her predictions.
To be totally honest, I struggled to get into this book, for me the writing didn't flow and I was torn between the actual cold case and also the underlying tensions between Vivvy, Mike, and Mike's wife (all will be revealed in the book!).
The premise was good but I just didn't enjoy it as much as I thought I would
An eminently readable and atmospheric psychological thriller, the writing is gorgeous and the plot dynamic
The characters are all deeply intriguing and the plot ebbs and flows around them with twists of both character and event
I loved Vivvy, she navigated a difficult life in a darkly impassioned way and the mystery elements are beautifully done and often unexpected
I genuinely loved this. Highly Recommended.
Vivvy Boucher is an astrophysicist who also has voices in her head which tell her about dead people. She saved a boy's life when she was young, and now that boy is a detective asking for her help with cases. A sharp and dark psychological thriller which really grips with its originality.
After a break for a few months this is the first book I asked to review.
It proved to be an excellent choice. The book is superbly written, progresses at a decent pace and has a number of good surprises (to me, I'm not saying it has 'book cover' twists or turns!)
Many times in the book I just wanted to keep on reading and reading but at other times I just wanted to get through a section that I felt to be too verbose. This is of course a 100% subjective view and I'm sure many readers will think the complete opposite. I found the book to be a hard read rather than a relaxing read - this is a plus not a minus.
Not intending to give anything away the book is one where the main theme of the book concludes and then there are several chapters working through the secondary storyline.
Couldn't quite give it 5 stars but I do recommend reading Night Will Find You.
Highly original and very clever, this is a superior thriller with complex characters and unsolved missing persons plus the added spice of an astrophysicist with supernatural powers. Very dark in parts but with a vein of humour, very enjoyable.
"Because you are like me.
My mother's fingers still play a scale down my spine when I remember. She knew.
She knew that a dead woman trailed after me when I climbed up the stairs and fell back into the warmth and light."
Night Will Find You by Julia Heaberlin is PHENOMENAL!!!!!
I have loved every book I have read by this author but Night Will Find You was on another level. I finished reading it and wanted to reread it over and over again, Julia Heaberlin has defintely become an auto-buy author for me.
"I wasn't a particularly brave little girl.I was afraid of roller coasters, backflips, horror movies, even the wall beside my bed. At night, after my mum turned off the light, I'd bang my fist on the wall to be sure it was solid. Because my sister complained, my mother limited me to fifty thumps - not so many as it sounds and never enough. I was certain I would slip through the wall where I slept, and no one would know where I'd gone tumbling."
All her life Vivvy Bouchet has walked a fine line between science and the supernatural, the real and the unknown. Even as a child, she was torn between the supernatural beliefs of her mother, and her sceptical older sister.
As a child, Vivvy had a premonition that saved a young boy's life and made something of a hero of the young girl from the outsider family. Mike and his family helped them to be accepted into the community.
"Most of all, they wondered about why we had to bring our heebie-jeebies from the Blue Ridge Mountains to their normal street on a pretty iron-flat piece of Texas."
Now Vivvy works in a remote area of Texas as an astrophysicist and searches the skies for proof of the uknown. She came back to her hometown six months previously to look after her dying mother. Whilst there she has been helping out her police officer friend Mike unofficially with some unsolved cases.
"The rumour is, after I look in my crystal ball of the dead Mike throws me on the table and cheats on his wife."
On the whole, the police are happy with the accuracy of her predictions. Then comes Jesse Sharp.
"Only three steps in and Jesse Sharp feels on top of me. Body, dense. Ego, Denser. The gun at his waist, inconsequential, a prop he doesn't need."
Jesse Shap does not believe in her ability, does not want to use her to help on the cold case of the missing girl but he does, albeit reluctantly.I loved Jesse's character, very vivid and well-written.
The relationship between Vivvy and Mike is complicated by unresolved issues as well as the fact that he is married to her sister. I didn't find Mike to be a particularly likeable character and I often felt frustrated during their interactions. Theirs was not the only complex relationship. Vivvy and her older sister, Brig, have a lot of unresolved issues between them.
"I'm the scientist. The astronomer with a PHD at twenty-eight.
She is Mike's wife. The owner of a prelaw degree she never ignited.
Do we always have to sacrifice, regret one thing for another? Could Brig not be a saint without also being a martyr? Could I not chose a dream in space without also being the selfish one?"
Unfortunately, Vivvy's work on the Lizzie Soloman case has put her firmly in the sights of conspiracy nut Bubba Guns.
"Bubba Guns has declared that chemicals in the water are turning catfish gay and that the government operates 'weather weapons' to turn on earthquakes and tornadoes when the people get too rowdy or needs distracting."
Bubba is an avid twitter user and soon has people riled up. Soon Jesse Sharp and her personal relationships are the least of her worries.
Throughout the book we learn more about the enigma that is Vivvy Bouchet. She is torn between supernatural and scientific, Brig and her mum, Two conflicting sides of her personality.
"I shut my eyes briefly, listening because I love the other sound up here, the one with the wind is kicking up. Mysterious Voices. That is what mom called trees rustling before a storm. Psithurism, if you're a scientist.
As always, too much chatting in my head"
There is so much to love about this book. I could go on forever. For now, let us just say that it is outstanding!
The Night Will Find You by Julia Heaberlin is one of those great thrillers where every spare moment you get, you're reaching out for it to read another chapter or three. Other than the mispers, the central character is Vivvy Bouchet, an accomplished scientist and astronomer with a PHD. I think she's a bit on the spectrum too. She had a premonition when she was young which saved a boy's life. Now they are both adults and the man now wants Vivvy's help to find a misper called Lizzie Solomon. It's a cold case and yet Lizzie's mother is serving time for her missing daughter, as no body was ever found. The descriptions of Vivvy's occasional visions and feelings will seem all to real to those of us who may have had periods like this in our lives. Additionally, Vivvy applies her scientific mind to problem solving which augments those snatches of intuition she gets.
I thought it to be be a very well executed thriller, which hooks you right in from the beginning. I would highly recommend it.
