A family drama crammed full of creepy? I’m SOLD
💚 When it comes to horror with a hefty backstory, Grady Hendrix has the market cornered He is to horror what Liane Moriarty is to psychological thrillers. He layers horror with other genres so seamlessly that it becomes a thing all of its own. In this case, it’s a horror/family drama/humour hybrid. And it is phenomenal.
💛There are several tense relationships that felt soooper real, offset by levity from the extended family of aunts/cousins.
🤎I was gripped from start to finish and listened to this in a day. Particularly notable was the vivid quality of the descriptions of the action sequences. These were so on-point, I could picture every move.
💜 I can’t figure out what is/isn’t a spoiler so I’ve reviewed this cautiously. Any spoilers can be seen on Goodreads and Audiobooks Nest, where there’s scope to hide them.

SOUNDBITE
🎧 Seriously recommend the audiobook edition, where narrators Mikhaila and Jay Aaseng deliver authentic performances that shift effortlessly from funny to dramatic then ramp the scary up to 100. It’s quite the trip and is practically cinematic.
🎧This was a straightforward listen and one I played continuously every chance I got without losing the thread.
Big thanks to NetGalley and W.F. Howes Ltd for providing me with an ALC in return for an honest review.
I love Grady Hendrix's books and this is definitely a new favourite. Unlike his previous work, there is no doubt that this is a supernatural horror book, but it still has so much heart and it is a bit of an emotional rollercoaster.
The relationship between the two siblings felt so real and Louise was definitely a hard character to like, but I found her journey quite moving as she came to understand her family's secrets and her part in it all.
I absolutely loved this book and cannot wait to recommend it in store!
I absolutely loved this. It was so creepy but soooo good. Its horror so it won't appeal to everybody's taste but it was definitely one for me. A family puppet comes to life and tries to kill people. I often get lost in action scenes but I could picture everything vividly thanks to the great writing and audiobook narrators. They definitely brought the book AND the puppets to life.
I dont want to give too much away but I found it quite sad at the end. It was quite emotional and definitely not what I was expecting to feel. One I had finished my first thought was 'now that would be good on screen'.
If you can go in as blind as possible with this book. This was my first book by this author and I'm already planning my next read by him. I would recommend this as an audiobook read
