Just One Thing is a non-fiction book by British author and podcaster, Michael Mosley. It basically summarises the information contained in his popular BBC podcast series of the same title. It is in no way necessary to have heard the podcast to benefit from this book, but readers may wish to access it after reading this.

Mosley lists thirty simple things that one can do in everyday life, explains why they might be beneficial, physically, mentally and psychologically, and backs that up with copious references, providing handy online links in the e-version of the book. He recommends when and how and for how long.

This is a book, then, that will tell you how, when, and why to, amongst other things: stand on one leg; finish your shower with a burst of cold; eat fermented food; fast overnight; eat oily fish; delay your morning coffee; sing; learn to do something new; eat an apple; put plants in your room; stand up; eat dark chocolate; read fiction; and count your blessings.

And he explains that you don’t need to do it all, just what you can manage to do consistently. This is a quick read, perhaps a book readers will refer back to: interesting, fascinating, and informative.

Thus is such an enlightening book! Apparently it has emerged from the podcast of the same name where (I believe) one thing is discussed each episode that will improve a persons health/life/wellbeing. The book brings this content to us in print form. This is an area I am very interested in, and thought myself fairly knowledgeable in, however I was gratified to have learnt lots, and have subsequently changed some of my daily practices as a result. the beauty of these 'things' is implicit in the fact that they are small - making them manageable and sustainable, and in true Michael Mosley fashion - they are all backed by science! Genius!!

A great book in the wellness genre that I would highly recommend.

My thanks to NetGalley, author and publisher for the opportunity to review this book in exchange for an advance copy.

When I saw this book I jumped at the chance to read it. Its by Dr Michael Mosley who is frequently seen on TV with his great medical knowledge having been a GP for a number of years. There is a podcast of the same name which I have also listened to.

I really enjoyed the book. The main reason being that all the ideas for things to do to improve your health all came with some research to back it up!! This makes a big difference to the believability of the book. Its amazing to see how just spending a little time on one or two of the items could vastly improve your health. There are so many to pick from, from having an apple a day (pink lady) he suggests to having a wee song and dance to help the blues vanish. The book is set out with tasks for morning, afternoon and evening so you could pick a few things to do and space them out over the day.

A book I will definitely be dipping back into and using over the coming months.

Thanks to Netgalley and Octopus Publishing for the ARC Copy of the book. This review is my own opinion.

I found this book really accessible, either to dip into or also read your way through. In it, Dr Michael Mosley presents a number of different things you can add to your life, little habits to improve health, both physical and mental.
It is broken down throughout a day into activities that might be best done in the morning, afternoon etc.
I like the fact it says, just one thing - it makes it feel really doable
Would definitely recommend and have already chatted to friends about it.

This was such an inspiring book! I’ve followed Michael Mosley’s books and TV programmes for a few years now and enjoy his ideas about diet and physical health. In fact before reading this book I’d already implemented a couple into my daily routine after all the indulgence over Christmas and New Year, without realising they were in the book, so that was a nice surprise!
I’d heard a couple of episodes from his podcast that this book is based on, and I thought they were really good ideas and very easy to implement. Just like the podcast, he explains each idea, backing it up with science, and also with case studies from people who tried them.
I really liked that right at the beginning of the book he tells you to only try one thing at a time, as it just won’t work if you do more.work. Also if the one thing you do try doesn’t work, don’t worry about it, as it might not be the right time for it, so try something else instead. Isn’t that refreshing?
There are so many brilliant ideas that I want to try, like improving my balance by brushing my teeth whilst standing on one leg, dancing and singing more, eating chocolate, yes really, and standing up more, rather than sitting around reading all day! 😉
Highly recommended!

A wonderful book that will make you think and choose more simple things in life. It is a book that I found exciting, intriguing and helpful.

A book that is easy to follow along and gives you hints on things you can do each day to maintain good health and happiness. It is so easy to read through and to pick out the things that will work for you.

New habits, new ways to live a better life. These are the things we are all looking for and this book can probably help you along in one way or another.

Michael Mosley is such a lovely avuncular figure. He trained as a doctor so has medical knowledge, but is also great at relating to and writing for lay people, all while being a human Guinea pig and trying out a multitude of tips to improve health.

These include everything from walking downstairs and getting more sunlight to singing and mindfulness. None of it is rocket science and you may have heard many of these tips before, but all are evidence-based and Mosley has a warm and friendly way of communicating his experiences.

This would be a great gift for a friend or loved one.

As someone who struggles with their mental health I find these books can be a useful tool as to how to change direction in your life. Sadly for me they all seem to tell you the same things. I liked that this one was written by a doctor that clearly knows what he's talking about. I have picked up a few helpful tips that I will using to change my outlook on life

Really simple but effective advice.

The idea of changing just one thing us brilliant, and such a good way to see how positive cumulative effects can be.

The just one thing approach is also helpful for those who feel stuck, overwhelmed, or depressed, as taking ownership of one thing can really help to empower you.

This book, based on Michael Mosley's podcast of the same name, is exactly what I need - achievable, practical small changes explained with the minimum of fuss. Michael Mosley gives a brief account of the science behind them without going into excess detail. Thirty Just One Things are included here, broken down into time of day when they're best or most likely to be done.

Some are surprising - we knew walking was good, but who knew that going for a walk within two hours of getting up in the morning has extra benefits?

Some of this stuff I already do. I do strength exercises and time-restricted eating every day (well, nearly) and am (unfortunately for those around me) frequently inclined to burst into song. Some I used to do and stopped (cold showers) but should probably start again.

The early morning walk (or run) is one I'm definitely going to incorporate. In fact, I started today, and listened to the Just One Thing podcast at the same time (episodes are also achievably bite sized, at less than 15 minutes).

I'm not sure about sprinkling sauerkraut on my porridge, though...

In Just One Thing, Dr Michael Mosley suggests a number of simple ways to improve our mental and physical health, the idea being that the reader chooses just the one that appeals to them the most to incorporate into their daily life. All of the suggestions posed are eminently doable, whether it be taking a morning walk, eating more oily fish or letting your hair down and dancing in the kitchen. The author also succeeds in putting forward his ideas without preaching or patronising.

Recommended for those looking to improve their health and wellbeing in a realistic and maintainable way.

Not a fan, sorry. I prefer books like this with more examples and research to send the message home.

This book is born from a podcast. I don't podcast so I'm glad he has switched media.
This guy is special. He says the right things in the right way and explains it all so well.
How to inject small but significant changes into your life. Ones that will stick rather than just be a fad. Which, let's face it is what we all do... start and give up...
But little things and triggers when to do them. These all instil good habits.
It's not rocket science, most of what he says is common sense... but sometimes it takes someone to give you a nudge.
This guy is my nudge.
Not saying I will do EVERYTHING... but I've already started some. And, as I always say...
Progress not perfection...

This book is written by the creator of a popular BBC podcast (which I will definitely be listening to from now on) and is I think the best self-help book I have read so far.

Previous self-help books I have read have contained very ambitious and ambiguous advice with very little support or tips about how to integrate habits and new ways of thinking into your life in a realistic way.

This book is all about the power of making tiny & realistic changes that over time will have a big impact. I genuinely felt excited to try lots of new things after reading this because they really are simple and doable!

The author has done such a good job at giving the reader as many tips, resources, and signposting to make it as easy as possible to integrate these changes (song recommendations, physical and mental exercise instructions, suggestions for apps…)

I really do recommend this book to everyone, and although not every bit of advice will be relevant to us all you can pick and choose which ways you want to make improvements in your life!

Just a note - there is lots of mentions of food & weight, so if this is a trigger for you please be warned.

Thanks to NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book.

Just One Thing by Michael Mosley

A very good book by the well respected ( by me ) Dr Mosley. I enjoy his series that occasionally come on the television and in his many other books.
Reading the book proves that you don't have to drastically change your life to make a difference to your health and just a few little changes can help.
The old addage ' Use it or lose it ' rings true.
