I enjoyed the book, but found the ending a bit abrupt. I wished we had learned more about the fate of the other victims.
Perfectly plotted and perfectly paced. Twisty and kept me guessing all the way through. Gripping all the way through
This book is a serial killer Thriller, which I really loved and enjoyed thoroughly. It is Book 4 in a series.
The story is about Detective Jack Warr, who is investigating a man called Rodney Middleton, who has committed some crimes. DCI Ridley who mentors Jack has been taken off his work post, but why? Can Jack help him?
I really liked Jack, and his wife Maggie. They are both interesting characters who I enjoyed reading about.
I loved this fast-paced book, which has very good writing that kept me captivated throughout.
Highly recommended!
Many thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for a copy of this book.
What a book! so much going on with two investigations for Jack to pursue as well as keeping his wife and family happy, it was non stop, I love it!
Detective Jack Warr is back preparing for trial for an assault offender, Rodney Middleton. DCI Ridley has been removed from his post under mysterious circumstances but he reaches out to Warr to help him unofficially in his predicament. Ridley indicates that the assault is only the tip of Middletons crimes. Warr starts looking into Middleton and find 17 old Amanda in his flat and has been living with him since she was 12. Suspicions point to Middleton having a link to several missing runaways but just needs to find the evidence to prove it.
Another epic instalment from Lynda La Plant. Warr is a great detective, always trying to balance his work and personal life. This can be read as a series or a stand alone book.
Yet another excellent book from lynda La Plante. I just love the ways she writes. This story was a brilliant thrilling roller coaster ride. I live the way this story has so many layers to it. You had to peel them away to solve the crime. The characters were great and developed well throughout the story. There was never a dull moment. I definitely recommend reading this book if you love intricate stories.
So much praise goes out to the author and publishers for creating such an interesting and exciting story that certainly had me on the edge of my seat.
The above review has already been placed on goodreads, waterstones, Google books, Barnes&noble, kobo, amazon UK where found and my blog https://ladyreading365.wixsite.com/website/post/pure-evil-by-lynda-la-plante-bonnier-books-4-stars and my new blog https://ladyreading365.blogspot.com/2023/06/pure-evil-by-lynda-la-plante-bonnier.html under my name ladyreading365
I adore Lynda La Plante’s writing this book did not disappoint. It was interesting reading about two cases. I enjoy Jack Warr’s character, he brings a calmness and order to the team. I really sympathised with him trying to juggle home life and his career, as well as trying to solve these cases. The book was paced well. It book could possibly be one of the darkest I’ve read from Plante, the suspects were very troubled. When Jack solved the cases, everything fell into place and as usual with Plante’s writing, I couldn’t help but be shocked by the confessions.
Absolutely brilliant. I read this book in a day as it was just too good to put down. Jack is being his usual stubborn, tenatious self but this time he needs to be to help a friend in trouble.
In this fourth entry in the series, Detective Jack Warr is involved in two muddled investigations. In the first, Rodney Middleton has been charged with armed assault but it is believed that he may be guilty of much more and Warr investigates at the urging of his boss/friend DCI Ridley. Then Ridley is removed from his post and the team if not supposed to communicate with him. Ridley however reaches out to Warr when he is falsely accused of murder and needs Warr's surreptitious help in uncovering what is going on. Both investigations were interesting and I like how the author makes Warr a 3D person by giving glimpses of his home life and showing us his flaws.
I love Lynda La Plante books and I enjoyed this novel, Jack Warr is a very likeable character and through reading the previous books I feel like I know him much better, he kind of feels like a friend, as his back story is very interesting.
Can’t wait for what is next for jack.
Great book
Another superb read from this very talented author. LLP Certainly knows what her readers want and delivers each and every time.
Superb book, I have just read books 2, 3 and 4 back to back, that had to be a bonus of falling slightly behind with the series, it was a joy to read them back to back but now i'm not sure I can wait for another for too long.
Jack Warr is a great character and getting to know him through the pages has certainly been interesting.
I would highly recommend this series to any LLP fans. you wont be disappointed.
When Jack Warr gets a hunch, he's usually right.
He does what he needs to do to get to the bottom of things.
Another fantastic read which has you turning page after page!
When Rodney Middleton is arrested for an armed assault, it seems like an open and shut case. DC Jack Warr’s instinct, however, tells him that there is more to this crime than meets the eye and is determined to find out what secrets he is hiding and what other crimes he has committed. Someone close to Jack is also keeping secrets. DCI Ridley has been suddenly removed from his post with nobody able to contact him. When Jack finally hears from him, he is shocked to hear his boss asking for his help: he has been accused of a murder he says he did not commit and needs Jack to get the bottom of it. Knowing he could get into serious trouble for helping Ridley and with the case against Middleton starting to open up, Jack has a very difficult time ahead.
As a long-time fan of Lynda La Plante, I always look forward to reading her latest offering no matter which series it is. We are now four books in to the Jack Warr series and it is definitely going from strength to strength. Jack is a fascinating character with an interesting backstory, something which is discussed in previous books and which helps to give the reader a firm understanding of what makes him tick. While we know that he does not always play by the rules, his determination to bring the guilty to justice is always apparent and is certainly evident in Pure Evil.
The title, Pure Evil, is a clever one, as we slowly discover the true extent of Rodney Middleton’s crimes. Although a lot of violence is inferred, we never read anything graphic which will appeal to those who don’t enjoy reading anything too shocking. Lynda La Plante slowly feeds us information about Middleton, keeping the reader guessing as to what he has done and also how much involvement other characters have had. This story, for me, is classic La Plante and something I could visualise being on television in a similar style of another of her hits, Trial and Retribution.
The sub-plot involving DCI Ridley is another great story and is testament to the writing skills of the author that she can include two stories of equal value in one book. This plot was very unexpected and kept me guessing throughout.
I’m really enjoying the Jack Warr series and hope that there are more to come!
I really enjoyed this novel, the main character is very likeable and has grown on me immensely, despite being flawed, he is a very good rounded character.
The family dynamics are authentic and storyline was right up my street.
I thoroughly enjoyed this Jack Warr novel and will definitely be keeping an eye out for further books in the series.
Many thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for gifting me this arc in exchange for an honest, unbiased review.
My thanks to Bonnier Books U.K. Zaffre for an eARC via NetGalley of ‘Pure Evil’ by Lynda La Plante.
It is Book 4 in the D.C. Jack Warr series that is a spin-off from La Plante’s ‘The Widows’ series. I have read the previous three books though this novel works fine as a standalone and background is provided for new readers.
Rodney Middleton is awaiting trial for armed assault. However, Detective Jack Warr is advised by his mentor DCI Ridley that Middleton’s crimes are more extensive and suggests that he dig deeper.
Then DCI Ridley is suddenly removed from his post with no explanation. No one on the team is allowed to contact him. As Warr begins to dig into Middleton's past, Ridley contacts him requesting his help to clear his name of a serious crime. No further details to avoid spoilers.
Warr is faced with the challenge of building an airtight case against a monster that includes winning the trust of a vulnerable young woman as well as exonerating his friend. In addition, there are various challenges to be addressed at home.
Over the years I have read a variety of Lynda La Plante’s crime novels and know that she prides herself on accurate portrayals of police procedures. She never disappoints.
Overall, ‘Pure Evil’ was another excellent police procedural that proved a very satisfying read. I look forward to the next in this series and have no hesitation in highly recommending it and the DC Jack Warr series as a whole.
Thank you to#Netgalley for the copy of #PureEvil by #LyndaLaPlante.
There is so much going on in this book there’s no time to draw breath.
At the heart is DSJack Warr going after Rodney Middleton a man accused of a simple knife crime, but who Jack believes is guilty of so much more.
A compelling read.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Fantastic book yet again from La Plante. Fourth book in the DC Jack Warr series, and I would highly recommend you read all the books in order.
In this book Warr is quested with being able to prove that a perpetrator is guilty of a lot more then he has been arrested for, while at the same time trying to prove the innocence of a friend. Two busy and complex cases that takes us, the reader, through a variety of rabbit holes.
Pure Evil is pure thrilling the fourth and probably the best yet. Jack Warr has to juggle his new case and helping Ridley. Non stop thrills in this riveting thriller. The characters grow with each book. Loved it.
I received this book from Bonnier Books UK and Netgalley for a review.
Book 4 of Lynda la Plante's Jack Warr series. Whilst strictly speaking it isn't necessary to have read any of the other books in the series before you start reading this one, the subplot involving Jack's boss, Ridley, will certainly have more of an impact if you have.
Pure Evil is another cracking addition to the Jack Warr series. A swift-paced plot that held my interest, great character development, fabulous. Highly recommended.
Thank you to NetGalley and Zaffre Books.
Lynda La Plante does not need introducing, she is a pilon on British crime both in books and on TV. An absolute gifted author who denounced aspects of our society that need shinning on and will leave you thinking of the book long after you finish it. It's a gift, one that she shares on each and every page she writes.
Jack Warr's character development is developing really well and you can't hep but getting attached to that character. I like the fact that there is more than one investigation going on as this must be reality for most of our investigating officers out there keeping us safe. It makes you realise how difficult juggling a normal life and crime solving must be. This book will be shown on TV no doubt, it is that good!
