Review for 'The Spirit Girls' by Dawn Merriman.

Read and reviewed via NetGalley for Dawn Merriman, Second Sky Publishing, Bookouture publishers and Bookouture anonymous

Publication date 9th May 2023.

This is the first book I have read by this author. It is also the first book in the 'Rylan Flynn Mystery' series.

I was originally drawn to this book by its colourful cover and intriguing, sounding synopsis and title. The synopsis stated that this book is 'A heart-pounding mystery with a touch of romance, The Spirit Girls begins a new series of paranormal thrillers that are impossible to put down. If you love urban fantasy or psychic thrillers by Heather Graham and Wendy Wang, this book will grab you from the first page and never let go’'. I am a fan of Heather Graham and am looking forward to seeing if this book lives up to this statement!! I must admit I was also biased due to the publisher being Second Sky (Bookouture). I have yet to read a book published by Second Sky or Bookouture that I haven't enjoyed. Hopefully this won't be the first... Watch this space! (Written before I started reading the book).

This novel consists of 32 chapters. The chapters are short to medium in length so easy to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!

This book is based in Indiana, USA 🇺🇲.

This book is written in first person perspective and the main protagonists are Rylan Flynn, Detective Ford Pierce and the killer. The benefits of books written in first person perspective with multiple protagonists are as long as they are well written it makes you feel that you are being spoken to by the protagonist and it can create more of a bond between yourselves and them. If there are several protagonists you also get to see more of what is going on.

OMG!!! WELL THAT WAS NOT WHAT I WAS EXPECTING AT ALL!!! ABSOLUTELY LOVED THIS BOOK, AN ABSOLUTELY PERFECT START TO WHAT PROMISES TO BE AN EXPLOSIVE SERIES!!

This book is extremely well written with vivid descriptions that really put you in the storyline, feeling the hair on your arms raise and putting you on the edge of your seat!!!

As previously mentioned this book was not what I expected when I seen this book was published under Second Sky which is a science fiction and fantasy publisher within Bookouture and Hachette UK. I was expecting there to be a lot more scifi. Now, I must admit I am not a massive fan of scifi but I'm an eclectic reader and will give most books a try. I would say this book is more paranormal, ghost and horror than SciFi so if you are a paranormal, ghost story or love a chilling book that will raise the hair on your arms and not a SciFi or fantasy fan please give this book a read. Trust me, you really won't regret it!! In fact, it doesn't matter what genre you like to read give it a read!!! Paranormal Investigator Rylan Flynn sees ghosts and she helps them to pass on to the other side along with some help from her Dad who is a priest. When visiting her Aunt Val she follows a ghost who leads Rylan to her body before she disappears. The police are called and Rylan is told to stay away from the investigation. However, what fun would listening be? Rylan starts digging into what happened but another body is discovered and the blame is put too close to home. Rylan won't rest until she finds out who the killer is even when it puts her in danger herself. Filled with suspense, murder, witchcraft, ghosts, friendship, family, mystery and a sprinkle of romance in the air this book is an absolutely explosive and epic start to what promises to be an addictive must read series!! I absolutely love ,love, LOVED the unique storyline!! I have read so many books that it is getting harder and harder for me to find a truly unique plot but Dawn absolutely smashes it out of the park with this one!! I picked it up and even though I kept telling myself just one more chapter I just could not put it down as every time I went to something happened which meant I had to read just one more again until I ended up reading it in one sitting having been glued to my kindle for a few hours!! Dawn's evocative writing skills and descriptions really brought the storyline to life and I just cannot wait to get hooked into the next book in this fantastic new series!!!

Clear your schedules before turning a single page as this book is truly unputdownable!!!

It is always worrying when starting a new series as you have no idea who the characters are. It is very important for me to bond with not only the lead protagonists but also any characters that may make repeat appearances during the series too.

The characters are all strong, well rounded and realistic. I really enjoyed getting to meet and learn all about Rylan Flynn, her past, her unique abilities and discovering how she feels about Ford. I love how she refuses to back down even when she has been threatened with arrest!! She has a great likeable personality and my heart goes out to her when her gift turns into a curse, especially in regards to her Mum. I also liked her friend and camerawoman Mickey and they have a great friendship which I'm looking forward to continue reading about in the next book. I also really like Ford and I cannot wait to see if it goes anywhere between him and Rylan, I've got my fingers and toes crossed that it does!! I was completely invested in all these characters as well as Rylan's Dad and Aunt Val who I am also looking forward to meeting again in the next book in this absolutely fantastic series. I'm just hoping it doesn't take that long too come out!! Hint, Hint Dawn 😉. Dawn's evocative writing skilsn really brought each of the characters to life and I am already missing them!! Of course I can't finish without giving a mention of the handsome George who is definitely one of my favourite characters!! I am a huge fan of pets/animals in books being a massive animal lover and I loved meeting George and looking forward to meeting him again soon!!

The ending was an absolutely explosive twist that I did not see coming at all. What an shocking cliff hanger!!! I was genuinely gobsmacked and I really cannot wait to get hooked into book 2 'Almost Human: Evolution'.

This book is the BEST ghost thriller I have ever read !!! This book really is a truly unique page turner that I picked up this morning and could not put it down until I finished!!!

Well done Dawn on an absolutely fantastic succeess and here is to what is guaranteed to be many more 🥂

Overall an absolutely addictive, action packed paranormal suspense packed thriller that will keep you turning the pages until you've devoured the book in hours!!

Genres covered in this book include Witch & Wizard Suspense, Christian Fantasy, Ghost Suspense, Spiritual Mystery, Psychic Fiction, Urban Fantasy, Occult Suspense, Religious Science Fiction & Fantasy, Occult Fiction, Christian Fiction, Witch & Wizard Suspense, Metaphysical & Visionary, Witch & Wizard Thrillers, Psychic Thriller, Occult Thriller, Ghost Thriller, Paranormal & Urban Fantasy amongst others.

I would recommend this book to the fans of the above as well as fans of Heather Graham, Wendy Wang and anyone who loves a unique, creepy paranormal page turner!!

322 pages.

This book is just £1.99 to purchase on kindle, free with kindle unlimited and £6.99 in paperback via Amazon which I think is an absolute bargain for this book!!!

The writing is good but something about this mystery felt flat. The characters were a bit two dimensional so I didn't relate to them. The ending as anticlimactic.

Thanks to Netgalley, the publishers and the author for allowing me to read this ARC. This is my honest review.

My thanks to Second Sky for an eARC via NetGalley of ‘The Spirit Girls’ by Dawn Merriman.

This is the opening book in a new paranormal mystery series featuring psychic Rylan Flynn, who has always been able to see the restless spirits that haunt Ashby, Indiana. She has learned to live with her gift and uses it to help them cross over. She has also recently started a YouTube channel, ‘Beyond the Dead Investigations’.

On a visit to the woods close to her aunt’s cabin, Rylan sees a spirit among the trees. The ghost of a young woman approaches and leads Rylan to her body. This quickly develops into a murder investigation, headed by Ashby’s lead detective, Ford Pierce. He has been a friend of Rylan’s older brother since childhood and is aware of her gift. He makes it clear that he doesn’t want her help. Still, when has that ever stopped a determined amateur sleuth?

Then another body is discovered and clues point in a surprising direction. Rylan is more determined than ever to uncover the truth despite the possible dangers involved.

When I started reading I found 28-year-old Rylan’s dreamy-eyed longing over Ford reminded me of something I would find in a angsty YA romance. Thankfully the narrative quickly moved on and I became caught up in its fascinating premise and superb mystery. Oh, and I could better appreciate Rylan’s undeclared feelings for Ford.

The narrative moves between the points of view of Rylan and Ford with the occasional chapter by the sinister, unnamed killer. I felt that the pace flowed well and was enhanced by a number of supporting characters, who enriched the story without it becoming too cluttered.

I especially liked Ryland’s dad who was supportive of her vocation and as a pastor assisted her at times in helping restless spirits cross over. That there was faith at the novel’s heart was appreciated as so often authors writing about the paranormal will shy away from this. There were also a few teasers for things to come in later books in the series.

Overall, I found this an engaging paranormal mystery and certainly will be looking forward to future titles in the series.

4.5 stars rounded up to 5.

What I love about the work of Dawn Merriman is the quick pace in which the story unfolds. She has a true gift in creating a paranormal world where you are intrigued in the story from beginning to end.

In short, the main character, Rylan Flynn has the unique ability to see and communicate with the deceased. There is a murdering spree of young girls in the sleepy little town of Ashby, Indiana. Their ghosts reach out to Rylan for help. But, she has difficulty understanding what they are trying to convey. At least not right away. As you progress through the story the sub-plots keep you actively engaged and wondering what is lurking around the corner! The characters and story development has great mystery, suspense and intrigue. I can’t wait for more in this series!

Many thanks to Netgalley, Second Sky and Dawn Merriman for an advanced reading copy.

I voluntarily read an advanced copy of The Spirit Girls by Dawn Merriman. All thoughts and opinions are my own. Thank you to NetGalley and Second Sky for this ARC.

This was a fun and easy read, containing just enough edge to be a bit scary but not excessively gory. Rylan was a great character, and I was instantly invested in her story. I usually like well-written stories about people who can see ghosts, and this book definitely made it onto my, enjoyed this book list. This book gave us a solid mystery, great characters I look forward to seeing in future novels, and a satisfying conclusion. I give this book a solid 4.5/5 stars.

“Where are you taking me?”

A girl with a dark ponytail walks deep into the woods while Rylan Flynn follows until the girl disappears and Rylan finds the girl's body. Rylan has always been able to see spirits. She helps them to move on. This time the spirit leads Rylan to its dead body. Rylan realizes the girl, Celeste Monroe, has been murdered with a coin left in her throat. What does the coin mean? Who could have done this?

Rylan decides to use her "gift" to catch the killer but the lead detective, Ford Pierce, has made it clear that she is to keep away from his investigation. Then another body is found, and Rylan is determined to prevent future deaths and catch a killer!

The Spirit Girls is the first book in the new gripping Rylan Flynn paranormal mystery series. It is a great and enjoyable beginning to the series. I enjoyed how Rylan was compelled to help the victim(s). She is used to helping spirits move on, but this time it is a little different as the spirits have led her to their bodies, not being able to speak, but looking for help. I admired her determination to help even if it meant stepping on the toes of Detective Pierce. She is a character to admire and root for!

This was an engaging mystery with a nice paranormal element. Like Rylan, I was invested in learning what happened to the young women and the circumstances around their deaths. I enjoyed the pacing and how the story unfolded.

I look forward to reading future books in this series. I have a feeling that Dawn Merriman is just getting warmed up!

Mysterious, shocking and fast paced!

OH MY GOD! I have found my new addiction! I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS BOOK!! It has everything I love in a paranormal book with a hint of romance and something sinister hiding in a locked room! I have so many questions that I am already chomping at the bit for the next book – I just hope we don’t have to wait too long!

I adore Rylan! She is the perfect heroine in this book. I can’t fault her, despite her recklessness getting her in trouble! She has secrets and I am looking forward to uncovering them!

I read pretty much the entire book in the dark, for two reasons 1 I had a stinky migraine and although I knew I should have slept I was hooked. The second, come on it’s ghosts, you HAVE to read in the dark! I will admit the opening pages did send a shiver down my spine and the ominous dark shadow in my room appeared a bit bigger but after that, it settled down. I grew accustomed to the ghosts, all but one. One, we know nothing about it, but that it’s locked away and it’s not good. Thinking about it, *shudder*

I always love the idea of police and ghost hunters working together, but it wasn’t to be here. Here, Rylan is seen as interference, but she knows more than the police do, and of course, she investigates! OOOh I loved it!! I need more in the series and I need to know when I can get the next book. I am OBSESSED!

I literally raced through the book, needing to know what was happening to these poor girls and what was hunting Rylan. Plus, a splash of Ford is just what the doctor ordered indeed!! The head-turning local detective is going to be more than meets the eye, especially after that scene in the house! Nothing more to be said. Talking of houses, I am back to Rylan’s, and god the questions I have!! Plus I would love to visit it!! What a trove!!

This is the first book I have read by Dawn, but it’s safe to say she has a brand new cheerleader! This book had me hooked, it had me sinkered and it had me seeing things I always try to ignore! I am just buzzing from this book.

Where can I sign up to read the next one?

The murder mystery is great. It’s spooky, exciting, well paced and generally ticked all the paranormal thriller boxes for me.

I loved Rylan’s relationship with her mother, the reason for her messy house, and the thing in the bedroom. The living situation gave me vibes of young Elise from Insidious: The Last Key, which I loved. These elements got me invested, and I’m eager to find out more.

Rylan’s father is a pastor, and I loved how they’d ghost hunt together and help the spirits pass over.

George, aunt Val’s black lab cross, was a sweet addition. Every book should have a dog.

I found the love interest, Ford Pierce, a little bland. I didn’t get a strong feel for his character, and his interactions with Rylan didn’t convince me that they had grown up together. However, I’m sure his character will grow with the series.

This is an entertaining read that I enjoyed and is sure to please fans of the sub genre.

The Spirit Girls by Dawn Merriman is the debut of A Rylan Flynn Mystery series. Rylan Flynn can see ghosts that present themselves to her. Her goal is to help them move on. She pays the bills by filming what she does for her You-Tube channel. Rylan is visiting her Aunt Val for breakfast when she sees a female ghost. The ghost leads her to a body hanging from a tree. It turns out to be the ghost’s body. One of the responding detectives is Detective Ford Pierce who makes Rylan heart zing. Ford does believe Rylan can see spirits, but he would prefer she not trespass (like she did the previous evening) and stay safe. When Aunt Val ends up at the top of the suspect list, Rylan will do whatever it takes to clear her. I found the story easy to read. The characters lacked development. We are introduced to them, but I wanted more (besides Rylan grew up with Ford and finds him attractive or her brother is ashamed of Rylan’s abilities because it messes with his career in the district attorney’s office). The Spirit Girls by Dawn Merriman is easy to read. I wish the author had given us more information on Rylan and there were other questions I wanted answered (how she got her powers, her mother, what is in her brother’s old bedroom). The plot never developed to its fullest extent. The story had potential, but it did not reach it. It just scratched the surface. The paranormal element was light (I thought there would be more). I wanted a tricky mystery, some scary moments, and a little humor. I was able to solve the crime early in the story. The twist was not a surprise. The ending was expected. The repetition of details was not needed (the whispers through the walls at home, Rylan’s dead mother, Rylan’s attraction to Ford). I wanted a surprise or two, more paranormal, less romance, and a more challenging mystery. A Rylan Flynn Mystery series has potential, but it was not achieved in The Spirit Girls. The Spirit Girls is a paranormal tale with lost souls, a dishy detective, an accused aunt, a horrific killing, and a sassy spiritualist.

Thank you to the publisher, the author and Netgalley for the opportunity to read this early.
A great start and middle but slightly let down by the end. All of the characters are believable and the possibility of a romance in the future sweetens everything up.
I would definitely read more of this series and more of the author's other work.

I really enjoyed this start to a new series. Great characters, an intriguing mystery, plenty of twists. There seems to be some mysteries that will carry through future books and I am excited for those. I definitely will be continuing these.

Great start to a new series.
Rylan can see spirits - she videos her interactions, creating a following and reputation in her town.
A young woman comes to her - in need of aid. When Rylan finds her body in her aunt's woods, she becomes determined to help solve her vicious murder. While balancing the suspicion of her long time crush, the detective assigned to the case.
I enjoyed the relationships, the family aspect. Great start to a new series.

Rylan has a paranormal ability - she can see and interact with spirits that have not yet passed over to the afterlife. Rylan, along with her friend and colleague Mickey, have a YouTube channel, showcasing Rylan chasing shadows and ghosts and has gained a good following. She has the full support of her family - her dad - the local clergyman, her aunt - the local bakery shop owner and her brother, a lawyer.

When 2 girls are found murdered and tied to a tree on her aunts property, Rylan does all that she can to clear her aunts name, much to the frustration of local police officer, Ford but it’s kept light hearted as Ford is friends with Rylan’s brother.

I liked this book. I wouldn’t say I loved it but it’s a good storyline, interesting characters and some unanswered questions that will be answered as the series continues.

Dipping my toe into the paranormal genre, The Spirit Girls is an easy and quick read for those (like myself) that scare easy! Probably more satisfying as a Young Adult novel (I’m 41). I expected more paranormal content to make the hairs on my arms stand on end, but it wasn’t there for me.

Available from 9th May, I’m grateful to both NetGalley and publishers Second Sky for the ARC.

So the premise of this book seemed fascinating. And when I started it, some of the character work was great. It really added to the intrigue and I wanted to learn more about the characters. Especially Rylan's relationships with her Mum and brother- the stuff with her Dad was meh for me.

But unfortunately, I ran into a stumbling block with the writing. Some of it was fine but there was something a little jarring about the writing style. It was too straightforward, in a way that often felt unnatural and it just didn't work for me.

Sadly, a DNF for me. But I still suggest checking it out if you like a paranormal mystery.

The Spirit Girls is a fun paranormal mystery novel that is very quick, easy, and enjoyable to read.

Rylan sees ghosts. She talks to them, she helps them cross over, and she has a YouTube channel (and a BFF for a camerawoman) to share her tales of ghostly encounters while also picking up clients and helping their ghosts cross over.

Rylan is a great character. She’s both easy to understand, and also complex. What I love about Rylan is that she has secrets and baggage, namely that her mother was murdered in the house and still haunts her bedroom where she was killed. (This is revealed in chapter 2, so not really a spoiler.) Rylan is also a hoarder. It’s hard to tell exactly how extreme her hoarding is, but… it’s pretty bad. I’m super curious to see how this progresses as the series goes on. I don’t think I’ve ever met a book where the protagonist has a hoarding disorder, so this was a unique and welcome addition to Rylan’s character.

In this book, Rylan becomes involved in the ritualistic murder of a teenage girl, when the ghost of said girl guides Rylan to her body and then disappears. As the bodies begin to stack up, and the murder investigation hits closer to home than she’d like, Rylan feels as though she has no choice but to solve the crime herself.

I loved the mystery in this book. I had suspicions about who the killer was, but I didn’t really know until the big reveal. I loved the characters. I loved the pacing. But I have one major gripe, that I really hope will be resolved before publication—after the first chapter or two, the author quits using contractions, leaving the dialogue feeling very stilted and unnatural. If we were talking about one character who doesn’t use contractions, that would be a character quirk. But no. This is every character from about chapter 3 til the end. It drove me batty. It wasn’t enough for me to quit the book, but it did pull me out of the story.

With that said, will I continue with this series? Absolutely! There are the beginnings of a potential romance and I’m really curious to see how that progresses and what it could mean for Rylan’s hoarding issues. And I’d love for her mother to cross over and find peace at some point.

If you can overlook the lack of contractions, this is a paranormal mystery you don’t want to miss!

Huge thanks to NetGalley, the author, and the publisher for an advanced copy in exchange for my honest review!

I was intrigued by the description of this book but did not fulfil its full potential for me.
We meet Rylan Flynn who has always been able to communicate and see spirits - this hasn't led to the easiest of lives for her.
The book alternates in first person POV from Rylan, Ford, Rylans aunt and brother plus the murderer. This does move the story along however the development of character was lacking for me.
Rylan uses her gift to help stuck spirits to move on however has not tackled the lingering spirit of her murdered mother. She has her own Youtube channel detailing her investigations however not everyone believes that she can really see the dead - including the local police.
Rylan becomes involved with a murder case when the spirit of the murdered girl finds her on her aunts back porch and leads her to her body. This gives Rylan a vested interest in finding justice for the murdered girl although her help is initially rebuffed by Ford her childhood crush now police detective.
The pace of the story was about right and suspect that the characters will develop further in any future stories. It was an OK read but not quite enough to entice me to read any further.
My thanks to the publishers and Netgalley for access to this ARC. All views are my own.

I do love a good mystery, add to that a supernatural element and I'm all in! This was a first time read by the author Dawn Merriman and I'm sat here wondering how I've never come across her work before? Obviously I've been living under a rock and will be rectifying that shortly!

The Spirit Girls bring us Rylan a woman who can see ghosts and helps them cross to the other side (Sometimes with the help of her father). She also has a YouTube channel which she operates with her best friend/camera woman. I adored the close knit community of Ashby although think Rylan had reservations about it with how people thought of her there. She has a interesting family although I'm hoping in further books we will learn more about her relationship with her brother and what is in his old room. I enjoyed the parts about her mother too. In honesty I think she has a really intriguing family and it's that which makes me want to read more of the series. Then we have Ford, the police detective and unrequited love of Rylan (Also Rylan's brother best friend and someone she's grown up with). Again, I love relationships like that in books. This reminded me at times of early (I'm showing my age here) Moonlighting with Bruce Willis and Cybil Shepard, the 'will they won't they'. I'm hoping that in further books we will get more of that push/pull with Rylan and Ford.

Over all the mystery was really good too. With supernatural/witchcraft vibes it will please most readers. I did think the few red herrings were good, but it was all tied up really quickly. I was left satisfied but kind of wanted something extra too - hard to explain that one.

This is a solid 4 star read and I cannot wait to read more of the Rylan Flynn series. I highly recommend this one if you like a strong woman character who has flaws and lacks confidence at times. She's someone I really would like as a friend. A supernatural mystery with a great set of characters. I rad this in two sittings, over 24 hours. For my Kindle Unlimited readers, this will be available on there so free if you subscribe when it's released.

Thank you to Second Sky and NetGalley for this ARC in exchange of an honest review.

Rounded up from 3.5

I love a good ghost story, especially if there's a bit of a murder mystery involved, so I knew I had to give Spirit Girls a go!

Rylan can see spirits and has used that to create a successful YouTube channel Beyond Dead Investigations. Usually she deals with restless spirits but finds herself out of her depth when she's led to the body of a murder victim by her ghost. Suspicion falls on her, so she starts her own investigation, much to the annoyance of her longtime crush on detective Ford Pierce.

The Spirit Girls was a quick and entertaining paranormal mystery, with a dash of romance added in there for fun.

Rylan was very sweet, if a little naïve, but I really enjoyed the chemistry between her and Ford. There's a lot of potential there for future books!

I will say that this feels a bit like a young adult novel to me, which is not a bad thing, but I was expecting it to be a little more gritty. It might be because Rylan feels a lot younger than she's supposed to be. I kept having to remind myself she was in her late twenties, not a teenager!

This was a solid start to the series, and it sets it up nicely for more books.

The first in a new paranormal mystery series I couldn't ignore
And, after reading it, I now can't wait for more!
Rylan Flynn has the ability to see and communicate with ghosts
And her interactions her friend now films and posts.

The pair are often in trouble with the law
Who warn them not to trespass any more.
However, they go where the restless spirits stay
Hoping to help send them safely on their way.

A young woman's ghost leads Rylan to see
Her murdered body, tied to a tree.
The police are called and make it clear
They don't want Rylan coming near.

With family drama, ghosts and murdered victims, too,
Finding the killer is what Rylan wants to do.
But doings so can come with so many surprises
She could become a victim before she realises!

The ability to communicate with ghosts gives an added twist
To this story which really shouldn't be missed.
There's suspense galore but laughter, too,
As Rylan and Detective Ford Pierce follow the clues.

This is an intriguing paranormal thriller
Involving Rylan and a serial killer
Such an engaging murder mystery with a touch of romance
I really hope you'll also give it a chance!

Thank you Netgalley and Second Sky for the chance to read an advance copy of The spirit girls by Dawn Merriman. A new author for me, and one that I will continue to read! The spirit girls is fast paced and easy read, and I totally enjoyed reading about Rylan Flynn and her ability to see ghosts. While it is not particularly horrific, there are a couple of scenes that will make your hair stand on end. My issue was I felt there could have been more plot development, and there were things that were not explained; and the abrupt ending which is obviously meant to be picked up in book 2 of the series. Hopefully I won't have to wait too long for it to arrive.
