I had the pleasure of working on this book during my dissertation and became extremely familiar with its story and characters. It was amazing to be able to watch Wendington develop throughout the story and the process and see her become the strong heroine that she is by the end of the book. Wendington is a strong and charismatic character who makes it impossible not to fall in love with and I know that myself at 13 or 14 would have been in awe of her. The story sits somewhere between slow and fast paced with extremely tense moments at time that leave the reader hooked and unable to stop reading during those intense moments of action. The narrative takes the reader on a journey that mimics that of Wendington, allowing us to embrace not only the emotions of the character but the chaos of the journey that she takes. Wendington Jones and The Missing Tree is a beautiful story of grief in the midst of a chaotic oceanic journey across the world. The setting of the 1920s was perfect for this story as Wendington defied so many of the norms for girls her age at the time and the contrast between England and Australia was crafted perfectly.
