I stumbled upon Lynn Katz's enchanting world in "Chester and the Magic 8 Ball," and oh boy, am I glad I did! From the moment I laid eyes on the super sweet and beautiful cover, I knew I was in for a cozy adventure.
The story revolves around twelve-year-old Georgia and her toothless rescue dog, Chester, who just happens to have a talent for predicting the future with the help of a Magic 8 Ball. Now, if that doesn't sound like the most adorable setup for a middle-grade book, I don't know what does! The synopsis promised a heartwarming tale, and let me tell you, it delivered on every front.
Georgia and Chester's dynamic is nothing short of magical. The way Chester confidently spins the Magic 8 Ball to predict everything from her parents' troubled marriage to the outcome of a coin toss in math class is both endearing and amusing. As the stakes get higher and life takes unexpected turns, Georgia learns a valuable lesson about the fine line between magic and probability.
The plot unfolds with a perfect blend of charm, wit, and genuine emotion. Lynn Katz masterfully weaves a narrative that keeps you hooked from start to finish. You'll find yourself rooting for Georgia as she navigates life's challenges, armed with Chester's quirky abilities and her own newfound powers.
The events in the book are not only entertaining but also carry a powerful message of hope. "Chester and the Magic 8 Ball" is more than just a delightful read; it's an empowering story that resonates with anyone facing unexpected challenges. The way the author tackles the themes of resilience and self-discovery is both heartening and inspiring.
In a world where the unexpected can be daunting, this book is a comforting reminder that there's always room for hope. The charming cover art is a mere glimpse into the cozy universe Lynn Katz has created, making it a must-read for all book lovers, especially those who appreciate the magic of middle-grade fiction.
Chester and the Magic 8 ball is a beautifully written chapter book about 12 year old Georgia. Georgia has always wanted a do, but however much she begged and pleaded her parents were fully against the idea.
Georgia’s dad starts to work very long hours in the emergency room at the hospital, not leaving much time for his family. Georgia’s mum starts to become more upset about this. Georgia thinks, if she uses her magic 8 ball, it can persuade her mum to just go and look at some dogs.
When Georgia and her mother finally go to the dog shelter, they don’t see a dog they fall in love with till they are nearly leaving and they clamp their eyes on Chester. Chester is a very sweet dog with no teeth! They bring him home and Georgia thinks this will bring her family back together. Unfortunately as soon as Georgia’s dad sees it, he moves out.
It is a really moving story with many ups and downs. The author writes very sensitively about really important topics for children such as friendships, health problems and a family breakdown. It is written with thought and tact.
I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.
Chester and the Magic 8 Ball is a really lovely children's chapter book about Georgia. Georgia has always longed for a dog, and no matter how much she pleads her case to get one, her parents are always against it. When Georgia's mother is fed up because her husband (Georgias dad) is always working long hours in the ER (and not getting enough time with them as a family), Georgia asks her magic 8 ball if it's the right time to get a dog and the Magic 8 ball keeps giving her a positive answer, Georgia manages to persuade her mother to take her to the dog shelter 'just to look'. They don't find the perfect dog until they're about to leave, and they meet Chester. Chester has no teeth, and Georgia and her mum fall in love with him. When her dad gets home the next day from work and discovers the dog, he moves out. Georgia is beside herself. Getting Chester was meant to heal her family, not break it further apart.
This was such a beautiful, touching, and moving story for children, which will definitely resonate with many children.
Chester and the Magic 8 Ball is a story about twelve-year-old Georgia and her dream of owning a dog. Chester is an adorable toothless pooch who can answer questions and predict the future through Georgia’s magic 8 ball. However, there is so much more to this story.
Lynn Katz writes about sensitive topics such as marital breakdown, friendships, jealousy and health issues within this cute and touching storyline. We see how these challenges are faced through the eyes of Georgia.
This well-written and thoughtful book handles life’s trials with sympathy, tact and feeling.
Thank you, NetGalley and Black Rose Writing for my digital arc in exchange for my honest review.
This suffered from the cute cover/boring story issue for me. I do think the target audience could like this story, but it wasn’t strong enough for my 30 year old ass to read it, unfortunately.
Twelve year old Georgia has always wanted a dog, and she will do nearly everything to convince her parents to get one. Her father has been working long hours as an Emergency Room nurse, so Georgia and her mother have had some quality time to spend together. One day, Georgia consults her magic 8 ball to see if it is the right time to persuade her mother to visit the local Humane Society, and she is heartened by its response. But when they return home with a dog named Chester in tow, everything seems to change in Georgia’s life. Luckily, Chester is not only a good friend, but he has a special ability that can help Georgia once again find balance within her unsettled environment.
This middle grade novel is well-written and reads quickly, as it is presented in a stream of consciousness style coming from Georgia’s own mind. As a sixth grader, there are of course challenges at school with friends and frenemies, but that is nothing compared to what happens outside of that. Big problems find their way to Georgia’s doorstep, and she is fortunate to have Chester nearby for comfort and companionship. Short chapters keep the narrative moving forward, and young readers will find familiar feelings and behaviors described within the pages of this book. At once an entertaining story of friendship and a heartfelt look into how one girl manages a life that seems to be crumbling at the edges, this is a tale that will resonate with young readers in similar circumstances.
Though it is not fair, young people often face challenges adults themselves have never experienced. In this story, Georgia finds herself managing the painful realities of divorce and cancer, and readers are given a clear picture of Georgia’s feelings as each event comes to her doorstep. While the overall presentation of the story is relatively surface-level in relation to these issues, the narrative will nonetheless speak to young readers in an engaging and accessible way. Incorporating themes of humor, love, and navigating change, this story is a good addition to library collections for middle grade readers.
I chose this the second I learned it was authored by a former teacher/principal.
While its beginning is quite cute (girl wants dog), the story evolves into much more. Lynn Katz skillfully mixes cute with serious topics, wrapping them all up in a satisfying manner. This would be a fun read together book for parents and children.
