This book is an illustration of everything that girls can do. It makes a point of saying that girls are more than pink and glitter and princesses. Girls can be that if they want to, but they can also be rockstars, welders, firemen, etc. Girls can do anything. Just because society sees them as one way does not mean they have to be that way. I love this message in this book and the book does rhyme, but some of them are harsh. It has a cadence, but the cadence is not smooth. And while overall, I do like this book, I wish there was one line that wasn’t in here. And that’s the line “God wanted you to be who you are”. I like that line because it’s accepting of everybody but by adding the word God, it will automatically turn some parents off whether religious or not. Based on the cover alone, I don’t think I have staying power on Library shelf. It will look old very fast.
Girls Can is a book that encourages girls to be unapologetically whatever they want to be. It encourages girls to ignore what other people think they should be.
Any book that encourages a can do attitude for young girls will always be a five star read in our house.
Myself and my girls loved it ⭐️
Thank you Netgalley for allowing me to read this book. All opinions are my own.
Girls Can is an important book for all children to read or be read to. I grew up with supportive parents who respected and support my goal to be a professional wrestler for most of my childhood. I never heard girls don't like that or don't do that. Not all children are that lucky and that makes me sad. I think not only will this book get the idea that girls are equal to little girls, it will help other children learn to be cheerleaders and support these girls as they become woman.
The most unrealistic part of Girls Can is that a cat would settle for a silver medal. 😆
I'm not sure this book would work for toddlers because there are a lot of words. But I think it would be perfect for Elementary age children. We should read more books to children that tell them they can be or do anything they want before society tells them anything different.
Thank you to Netgalley and Black Rose Writing for providing me with a review copy.
Great message for both girls and boys about all girls can do. I loved that it showed some traditional and non-traditional roles that girls can take. I will purchase this for my library!
I’m sad that we even need a book that stresses all the amazing talents girls have and that they can be anything they want to be despite what others around them might say, but unfortunately, we still DO need this type of book and “Girls Can” delivers! The messaging is powerful and inclusive - I love the diversity of the girls in the illustrations as well as the wide variety of talents, hobbies, and careers this book includes. At first I was a little thrown when God appeared on one of the last pages as there isn’t any indication this is a Christian book, but then I realized that perhaps the one mention is there particularly for girls who grow up in a conservative faith based community and are taught that girls need to be a certain way, thereby making this line even more impactful for them. The inclusion of God lets these girls know that they can still be spiritual and also break any outdated prejudices against females.
This book is for anyone who wants to remind the girls in their lives just how incredible they are and how limitless their futures can be as long as they just ignore anyone trying to tear them down. I know I’m buying a copy for my house.
Thank you to NetGalley and Black Rose Writing for the advance copy in exchange for an honest review.
Read with a 9 year old.
We really enjoyed this a lot. I enjoyed the positive message that girls can do anything - even stay at home taking care of children. My only negative is the line about God making them the way they are. If that was left out so it could include everyone, even those who do not believe in God, it would more than likely be a 5 star rating for me.
The 9 year old felt the same way, thinking the line about God should be left out.
I sat down and read this to my 7 year old daughter and I loved it! The pictures were great and the message in this book is exactly what we need to be telling these young girls! My daughter loved it just as much even had a tear in her eye cause she understood just what it meant. Great great book I'll be looking for a physical copy to have in her collection.
Girls Can by Deb Preston 5/5
Girls Can is the perfect children's picture book that shows little kids that girls in fact can do anything they put their minds to. Girls can have ideas and interests that does not fit the stereotypical idea of what a girl likes and can do. Girls have the entire world and all the jobs, style, hobbies at their fingertips and I love when it is displayed in a children's book that they can do anything they want to. The story is rhyming, which helped keep their attention and the illustrations are amazing. While reading my children were shocked at the hobbies, jobs that the girls were doing, and it opened the floor to a discussion about it all. The message in this story is clear and I would recommend this book.
I really enjoyed this book, and I loved the message that comes from Girls Can!
The book focusses on the power of girls and the different strengths and hobbies and interests that they can have – these are not and should not be determined by their sex and gender.
My daughter is 5 and loves princesses and unicorns, but also loves dinosaurs and has an astronaut and knight costume, complete with helmet and visor that I had to get from the “boys” sections, so this book is one that needs to be read and shared!
I loved the layout of the book, the style and the words used, the rhyming nature was great, and it made it a fast and easy read and it really gets its point over.
The illustrations are lovely, and it is definitely a book I will be recommending – it is 5 stars from me for this one – very highly recommended!!
Girls Can is a picture book for children with a suggested reading range from age 3- 8 years old. I loved how it was both empowering and encouraging. Its message is clear: Girls can do and be anything they want. The illustrations are beautiful, and the rhyming was clever, smart and lyrical.
The message is a great one for girls and this is a great book for parents to read and share with their children. "Be who you are" is a beautiful message that is not given enough. I love that is it clear that you young girls do not have to follow gender-based stereotypes. That girls can play with dolls or build forts and climb trees. That they can be who they are, follow what dreams they have and play a part in the world.
Acceptance and being yourself are lessons we all need to embrace, live by and instill in our young. Now we need a book for young boys sharing the same message.

What a great book for impressionable young girls. I recommend this book to anyone who has a young girl that they are raising. Deb Preston sends the message to young girls that they can do anything. They can be the best moms or glam their hair, however, they can also run the farm and or be a CEO of the big company. The author talks about how some people are set in their ways of how they think, but girls can help them change their thinking and be whoever they are meant to be! A ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ read for sure! #girlscan #netgalley #netgalleyreads #debpreston #debprestonblog #girlscandoanything #bookstagram #reachforthestars #readwithmslucy #mslucysliteracycorner
I loved the message in Girls Can! Girls can have a manner of strengths and interests and that isn't determined by their gender. They were created uniquely and with care! The rhyming and lyrical nature of the book lends itself to being easy and fast to read. The illustrations are beautiful and capture the heart of the story. I would recommend this to any parents of girls! And it is definitely a book I hope to add to our library very soon!
This book validates every girl regardless of of who or what she is or wants to be, and does it very well and with very clear illustrations and delightful rhymes.
The illustrations by James Henry Dufresne are simple, delightful, imaginative, and colorful.
Well suited for reading WITH someone of any age including ESL, and great for gifting to anyone, but especially to a school or public library!
