“Over My Dead Body” by Maz Evans is a delightful blend of mystery, humor, and the afterlife. Dr. Miriam Price, a misanthropic soul, wakes up dead and finds herself in Limbo. Everyone mistakenly believes she committed suicide, but Miriam knows she was murdered. The catch? She can’t communicate with the living. However, her elderly neighbor, Winnie, can see, hear, and talk to her. Together, this unlikely duo embarks on an investigation to solve Miriam’s murder and perhaps avert Winnie’s impending demise. As time ticks away, they must unravel the truth before it’s too late—for both of them. The author weaves a clever narrative, infusing it with wit and heart. The humor is tightly packed, and the banter between Miriam and Winnie is a highlight. Recommended.

I was a big fan of Maz Evans' 'Who Let The Gods Out?' series and I jumped at the opportunity to read her new book, a whodunnit with a twist. Dr Miriam Price has to solve her own murder mystery so that she doesn't spend the next half of century stuck in limbo. As always, Evans shows a lot of imagination and creativity in dealing with the Afterlife. Her sense of humour is second to none, while at the same time tackling some serious issues with sensitivity and kindness.

As a bonus, I listened to the audiobook narrated by the author herself.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC in exchange of an honest and impartial review.

I love Maz Evans' writing for children so was intrigued was a book for adults might read like. I was not disappointed - this is just as good...Maz is such a versatile writer.

The premise is so ridiculous that it shouldn't work - a dead doctor and her grumpy elderly neighbour teaming up to solve how the doctor woke up dead - murdered actually! There is nothing to like about Dr Miriam - she is selfish and self-centred. The relationship between her and Winnie, her neighbour, made me laugh out loud. As the story unravels, it is clear that there are a lot of people who would like to see Miriam dead - even if that meant committing murder! Miriam is stuck in a kind of purgatory, where she starts to learn some uncomfortable home truths!

I loved to dislike Miriam, yet, bizarrely, I was also cheering on her crime-busting skills. Both Miriam and Winnie are thoroughly entertaining characters who changed each other as the story drew to an end.

Funny and meaningful - be careful what you wish for!

This was quite an entertaining book with two lead characters that were great to read and really worked well together. The plot wasn't bad and if it had focused on the murder element rather than drifting off along so many other unresolved family tangents, it would have been a well paced quirky crime story. The interactions with Winnie were fantastic, I really loved her as a character, and the others were also well developed. The murder element was good and I enjoyed the resolution. The only issue I had was that all the extra elements slowed the story down and while well written, wasn't really what I wanted in a mystery. Not a bad first adult novel from one of my favourite children's writers, but not quite as good as her children's books for me.

Maz Evans is a gem! What a phenomenal and brilliant debut! I am a converted fan of Evans purely after this book.

Over My Dead Body is phenomenal. Honestly, this is one of the best debuts I have ever read. This book is one that should be on everyone’s TBR.

My emotions have been taken on a rollercoaster. I have laughed out loud on numerous occasions, been full of tears and most importantly been left with a heart full of love.

I was pulled in instantly to this one. I knew instantly that this was going to be a great read. However, I completely underestimated how much I would love this book.

Miriam Price is dead. If she cannot prove her theory that she was murdered, she has 50 years to live in limbo. This is full of lighthearted, funny moments. However, Evans has also included some real life themes and some darker elements which have been included perfectly.

I love the wit that is included in this one. The writing is addictive and if anyone had said, a funeral scene would make me laugh. I’d have been outraged. However, Jake completely stole the show there.

This is original, unique and everything I was hoping it would be. I have adored this from beginning to end. Over My Dead Body is a gem from beginning to end.

The characters in this book are brilliant. You can’t help but feel as though you know each of them and they have a real sense of familiarity.

There is nothing negative I can say about this book. This is a wonderful read from beginning to end. I will be recommending this book to everyone.

Thank you Net Galley and the publishers of this book for providing me with a review copy of this title.
Over My Dead Body is a very funny book, with characters I warmed to and liked very much. Dr. Miriam Price has been murdered and will remain in limbo until she can get the coroner to rule that she didn't die by misadventure. She returns to Earth as a ghost and sets about solving her own murder. Her only hope of doing this lies with her elderly neighbour Winnie, with whom she had had a long running feud. Winnie can see Miriam, while others don't.
There was so much packed into this book that made me stop and think. It was just brilliant and I highly recommend it.

Loved it. Funny, pacy and a fab whodunnit. Dr Miriam Price is a character you don’t always like, but are always thoroughly entertained by. I loved the evolution of her story, her relationship with Winnie and the other characters that supported the main story beautifully.
If you want a read with a lot of heart and plenty of laughs then this is a perfect book for you. I hope Maz Evans writes more adult novels, this is completely brilliant.

The leading lady Miriam Price is found dead. Did she die by accident or murder that’s how the book starts. I loved the concept of this book as it made me look at the afterlife and what I believed happened when you die. I can honestly say this book had me laughing out loud. The neighbour Winnie was hilarious their on going feud and what they done to each other was so funny. All characters were likeable and I loved the parts up in heaven. After reading I’m hoping that’s exactly what the afterlife is like. I would highly recommend you read this book as it’s completely different to all the other murder, mystery detective books out there. Well done Maz Evans your a star ⭐️

“Never say sorry. It’s a simple mantra and one that has served me well. It has everything you need from a guiding philosophy: it’s pithy, it’s achievable and it sounds good in Latin: Numquam deprecaris.”

In this sharp, funny novel by Maz Evans, Dr Miriam Price must prove she’s been murdered or spend the next fifty years in the lobby of the afterworld.

With her corpse found on her bedroom floor amid bottles of scattered pills and empty vodka bottles, the consensus is that Dr Miriam Price died by ‘misadventure’. It surprises none of her family or friends, who were well aware of her drinking problem, and the police are satisfied with the evidence of the crime scene. Miriam however is convinced that she was murdered and overcrowding in Eternity (due to CoVid) means if she can’t prove it before the coroner’s official ruling in five days, she’ll be stuck in limbo for the next fifty years.

Over My Dead Body made me laugh, and quite a lot. A workaholic A&E consultant with a drinking problem and an uncompromising personality, Miriam is quite a character. Not a particularly likeable one at first to be honest, but definitely entertaining. She does grow on you though, and I really liked the redemptive path Evans developed for her.

Being incorporeal and all, Miriam needs help if she is going to find her killer, unfortunately for her, the only person that can see or hear her is Winnie, the elderly neighbour with whom she’s been waging war for years. Winnie is more than capable of giving as good as she gets and their scathing banter is hilarious as the two begrudgingly work together.

There is no shortage of suspects in Miriam’s murder given she’d recently left her husband for her married lover, fought with her best friend, and lost a young patient unexpectedly. The deadline Miriam and Winnie are working to enhances the tension, and the mystery is well plotted. I found the identity of the guilty party to be a surprise but really enjoyed the drama and chaos of the denouement.

Despite the general hilarity of the novel, Evans touches on serious themes such as grief, addiction, regret, atonement, and redemption. There’s also some thoughtful commentary about life, and death, and a moving, happy conclusion.

Irreverent, witty, with plenty of heart, Over My Dead Body is such a fun read, and I won’t apologise for recommending it.

One sentence synopsis: a murder-mystery where the detectives consist of 1) the victim of the murder and 2) her crotchety elderly neighbour.

I was genuinely not expecting to love this book as much as I do. It's funny and witty and quirky and everything a comedy about a murder narrated by the murder victim should be. The characters are really fleshed out and by the end I'd grown to love the relationship between Miriam and Winnie. Neighbours-to-enemies-to-haunted-murder-solving-best-friends? A dynamic I didn't know I needed but would love to see more of.

I love explorations of the afterlife, and this one doesn't really dwell too long on any of the philosophical questions you might expect from something set partially in the afterlife but honestly I think that's why I loved it so much. We don't need all the answers we're just along for the ride.

The Good Place meets CSI vibes. Would definitely recommend if you like murder mysteries and snarky narrators.

I have already loved Maz Evans’ children’s books and was really interested to see what her first adult novel would be like. I loved the premise of this- a surgeon is trying to work out who murdered her and was happy to get an advanced copy of the novel.
Well, I absolutely loved it! The characters of Miriam and Winnie were really endearing, and their relationship really made me laugh. I enjoyed the development of Miriam across the novel and her acerbic attitude towards others hides a soft centre.
I would definitely recommend this!

Hahaha, this book is so funny, and just what I needed to brighten up a heavy week. Its approach to death and dying brought a light hearted perspective that I really enjoyed.

Dr Miriam Price wakes up dead. Sentenced to another 50 years in limbo for killing herself, she sets out to prove her theory that her death was caused by foul play. Enter her most hated rival, neighbour Winnie, who plays detective. But there's a twist! The fact that these two ladies can see and communicate with each other means Winnie hasn't got long left, so the heat is on!

The relationship between these two characters just had me laughing out loud. In fact, most of the characters in this book will worm their way into your hearts, and at one point I even shed a little tear!

Read it and enjoy it!
