This is a great read, I think it is a fabulous idea which had me glued to the pages. A unique descriptive book where recently deceased Miriam is trying to find out how she died and she has limited time to find out.
Loved this!! It's pacey and laugh-out-loud funny, with some surprisingly tender moments too. I would definitely read more by this author
Miriam is very dead...and very angry that she is, because Limbo is definitely not her favourite place, and she has only a few days to prove that she doesn't deserve to be kept in there.
Maz Anderson brings her customary wit to her first outing as an adult fiction author.
Her previous series "Who Let the God's Out?" was written for "tweens" and proved very successful, and very funny.
"Over my dead body" has vibes of "The Good Place" ( A hugely popular Netflix series) and is none the worse for that.
From the first to last sentence, this murderous romp drags the reader at speed through its pages, finally neatly tying up all its loose ends with a truly happy ending.
Thank you Netgalley and Headline for letting me read and review a copy of
Over My Dead Body by Maz Evans
Dr Miriam Price lies dead in her flat surrounded by pills and alcohol. The verdict is likely to be death by misadventure but she knows she was murdered.
Our heroine discovers more about herself and the people around her after her death than she ever did whilst alive, and forms an unlikely bond to secure some help with solving her murder. The writing settles into a wonderful blend of character development, an intriguing plot line and bizarre situations. Few writers can have you smiling or even laughing out loud given a grim tale including murder, suicide, bereavement and miscarriage of justice but Maz Evans achieves it.
This funny and thought provoking story is well thought out with the many threads coming together at the end. A successful transition from children's fiction to adult fiction.
Thank you to Net Galley for ARC.
Utterly fabulous! Maz Evans has transitioned from children's author to adult's as seamlessly as a winner of the Sewing Bee. This was pacey, hilarious, with utterly glorious characters and a genuine whodunnit. I laughed out loud and am almost willing to forgive the fact that Maz doesn't know that scones rhyme with Jones, tsk. I'll be prescribing this to everyone for their summer holidays for some joyful reading that might even bring an unexpected (if happy) tear to their eyes. Looking forward to the next one!
A body is discovered dead from an overdose and alcohol. The story is narrated by the victim, who must prove murder not death by misadventure, or spend 50 years in purgatory.
In order to reduce her time in limbo she teams up with her neighbour from hell whose mutual dislike knows no bounds.
A real page turner filled with twists and turns and a good deal of humour too. Read from start to finish in two days, Recommend for anyone who likes crime dramas but with a lighter side.
Dr Miriam Price is dead. But she hasn't gone quietly.
She's hanging around in Limbo, because the perceived wisdom is that she committed suicide. But Miriam knows she was murdered.
The trouble is, how to prove it?
It seems that she can still interact with her neighbour Winnie, who's on the way out herself.
Can they prove Miriam's murder, and get her out of Limbo?
A tricky one to review for me.
Whilst I can see that everyone else loved it, I just didn't find it amusing.
That's my sense of humour, and not a comment on the writing style or story or editing.
I found the book to be a quick, easy read (this is never an insult) .
Wish I'd liked it as much as everyone else has.
What a ride this book was. There were laughs, there were tears! And any book with a sassy older lady gets a huge thumbs up from me. I loved it!
4.75/5 stars! I cannot believe that this is the author's first foray into adult fiction. This book somehow manages to be both cozy and hilarious. I felt for the characters in this story and saw a lot of myself in Miriam. Proving its never too late for a second chance, Miriam has to team up with Winnie to solve her own murder. I laughed and cried while reading this and cannot wait for the author's next book.
I received an advance review copy for free through NetGalley, and I am leaving this review voluntarily
The premise of this title captured my attention immediately - a misanthropic cynical protagonist whose death was ruled a misadventure seeks to solve her own murder. For that purpose, she has to rely on the last person she had in mind - her elderly neighbour, with whom she has a bitter and ongoing childish quarrel and, unfortunately for Miriam, is the only one who can help her. An unlikely partnership ensues, as the two work together to solve the case before time runs out for them both.
Over My Dead Body is an emotional ride and an absolute gem, the first adult fiction by Evans who is known for her Vi Spy and Who Let the Gods Out series. Like its fantastic, well-rounded characters, the book continually peels to reveal more layers of itself. Funny and heartwarming, its fast pace, the intriguing mystery at its core and, naturally, the back-and-forth dynamic between Miriam and Winnie kept me turning page after page while holding back tears of joy.
Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity of reading it in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you to netgalley for a copy of the ebook!
I don't read many books aimed at adults anymore, but after reading this I'm going to have to find a balance in my reading diet.
It was my exact humour - the humour I love. Miriam, the main character is dead - she is furious about it. Miriam is determined to prove she was murdered, not that she remembers - will help from the unexpected it's a twist on a who-dun it.
What I loved is now, even in the afterlife the character grows and changes. The development and friendships are perfect. A really pleasant read. Will you work out who the culprit is? I had my suspicions - and now I wonder if there will be a book 2!??
Over my dead body
Dr Miriam Price is dead. With the body surrounded by empty bottles of alcohol and pills, and the autopsy report confirming lethal levels of the substances in her system, the coroner is happy to pronounce a death by misadventure verdict. But Miriam knows it wasn’t suicide. This was murder. Now, all she has to do is prove it to gain entry to Eternity. Only 2 problems: she’s dead and, with Miriam never really working hard to win friends and influence people in life, there are quite a few suspects. To make matters worse, the only person she can now communicate with is her ex-neighbour, Winnie, and let’s just say, they were never on friendly terms during Miriam’s mortal years.
This is a wonderful first foray into adult fiction by an author I already loved as a children’s writer. Sharp-witted, warm hearted and intricately plotted, this is all I have come to expect from Evans’s writing, and much more besides.
I really enjoyed the character development; Miriam manages a journey of self-discovery, acquiring discrimination in relationships and the ability to put others before herself, without losing her caustic humour or the story sinking into over-sentimentality. Miriam and Winnie’s relationship is an absolute gem!
Evans has produced a classic cosy crime mystery, with a fresh, unique and modern twist: think Randall and Hopkirk, Deceased meets The Thursday Murder Club and you’re halfway to guessing what to expect from this absolute treat of a novel. Just perfect!
I have been lucky enough to have been sent an advanced reader’s copy of Maz Evans’ debut adult novel Over My Dead Body thanks to NetGalley.
The main character Miriam must team up with her neighbour Winnie in order to prove that her death wasn’t accidental otherwise she is doomed to be stuck in limbo. However, it would be easier if the two had actually gotten along in life.
This book is the perfect fusion of comedy and crime set to be released in August 2023.
What I liked about it
Everything. This book has honestly been one of the most enjoyable books I have ever read. I was originally drawn in by the cover and the tagline - “Miriam Price has been murdered, and she’s furious about it” and was immediately rewarded by the amazing story, showing that it’s never too late for you to change (even in death) whilst also keeping the tone somewhat light with humour. I commend Maz Evans for being able to find a way to perfectly balance the humour and the seriousness of the situation that the main characters find themselves in. The plot is interesting as well as well-written and the characters in the book are realistically flawed, making them more relatable. Every moment and every character is well thought out, which is something that you discover as you read to the end of the book, especially when it comes to the big reveal. I also loved Evans’ idea of the afterlife, completely reimagined (reminded me a bit of Netflix’s The Good Place) and completely amazing.
What I didn’t like about it
Nothing. I have no pointers. A true 5-star must-read for all.
Absolutely loved this adult fiction from Maz Evans. It had me laughing out loud from the start with Miriam Price's commentary laden with sarcasm. Miriam is stuck in limbo because she has died by misadventure but she knows she didn't commit suicide and has to enlist the help of the only other person who can see her to solve who did kill her. If you are close to dying then you can see dead people which means her helper, Winnie from next door (they hate each other!) has a limited time too. It had me guessing right until the end who had killed her as she is certainly a big character and has a few enemies! Brilliant, could not put it down!
I was lucky enough to grab the ARC of Over my dead body from Netgalley and I’m so happy I did! I was initially drawn in by the tag line on the cover “Miriam Price has been murdered and she’s absolutely furious about it!” and the wit and sarcasm continued throughout the book.
Miriam Price was found dead and has been ruled a “misadventure” with only her elderly neighbour that can see her. The duo get to work to prove that Miriam was in fact murdered.
I loved this book so much, it was emotional, funny and light hearted that will make you laugh out loud. Definitely the easiest 5 stars I’ve given this year!
What a thoroughly enjoyable book! As soon as I saw that Maz Evans had written a book for adults, I knew I wanted to read it. Having been a fan of her books for children, I was interested to see what this first foray into adult fiction would be like.
Over My Dead Body tells the story of Miriam Price, a doctor who is dead but is stuck in limbo and is trying to find out who killed her. In limbo, she is able to wander earth and communicate with a few people.
This book had a number of funny moments but was also really moving, as Miriam finds her way and learns about her family and friends.
I would definitely recommend and buy this book - a gripping read
A fantastically funny five-star read. I know we shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, but this one had my attention immediately. Doctor Miriam Price is someone you don’t always like, but that’s part of her charm, when you start this story, you see her one way, but by the end you see her as so much more. There were so many funny, moments in this story, but there are also thought-provoking ones as well, and a couple that had me sobbing. The character who surprised me most though was Christian, he just seemed a little shallow, but again he was sone that once you got to know him, you felt so much for him. This author was new to me, but I had to set an alert in case they do anything else for grown-ups, as the way they write characters just sucks you in, there are so many layers and underlying stories that hook you and keep you stuck between the pages and characters that have so much depth to them, watching them grow into themselves just warms you up.
As soon as I saw the front cover with the tag line "Miriam Price has been murdered. And she's absolutely furious about it" I just knew I had to read it.
Miriam's death has been ruled as 'by misadventure' but she knows she was murdered. She was just too hammered to know who. Stuck on earth as a ghost, she team's up with her elderly neighbour, Winnie, who is able to see her, to try and solve the mystery.
I honestly loved this so much. It's funny, emotional and mysterious, with great characters and character development. I don't want to say too much as it is too easy to spoil, but it's an entertaining read and had me laughing out loud.
Thanks to Netgalley and Headline for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I absolutely hated this....for about ten minutes. By the end I loved it! A great cast of characters, an unexpectedly funny and light hearted read. Brilliant
