This is such a big year for England with Eurovision right round the corner. So this book was perfectly timed. I adore Eurovision so just had to get this one when I saw it. This book is littered with Eurovision history, from the past 10 years. All the host countries, songs, winners ect are all real and I loved revisiting the history alongside the characters.
I also loved the fact that Eurovision was such an integral part of the history of not kh the characters lives. But that if their families as well. With Millie's Grandparents haven Emmet at the Brighton Eurovision when Abba won with Waterloo. Such a great song.
Mille and best friend James go to the 2010 Oslo Eurovision where they meet Noah and Ingrid and make a pact that they will all meet up at each Eurovision every year.
This was a really fun book, with great nostalgia, friendship, fab characters, laugh out loud moments and great moments that really made me smile. Don't miss this book.
A five-star read that would earn ten points. This was such a complex story, in ways I hadn’t even imagined, I loved it so hard and that was odd as I didn’t always like all of the characters. In fact at times some really annoyed me, but I also think that’s part of why I adored this story right from 1974, in all of its Abba glory. Millie, James, Ingrid and Noah will all take you on their time-spanning journey and you will love some years more than other, but each year and each place play their roles. Each year and country pull together much like the contest itself, all seemingly different, but having a theme running through. This story isn’t all glitz and glamour, it shows us the underbelly of friendship, and it also shows us how far we are willing to go for each other. Now I am of to practice my ‘you must recognise me’ and ‘I’m a celebrity’ in the manner of Ingrid Vogel as homage.
An easy read focused around Eurovision, perfect read in the run up to the big event itself. A great story of friendship and love.
I'm a massive Eurovision fan, so when this book came onto my radar, I knew I would have to read it. And wow, I couldn't get enough of it.
Set to the backdrop of over 10 years of song contests, we get snapshots into the lives of our four main characters, and what they are up to now, as well as enjoying the vibe of each city.
All the Eurovision acts, host countries, winners etc... that are mentioned are all real, which makes a lovely change from books that do fictionalised versions of these sorts of things.
From the prologue of Millie's grandparents meeting at the Brighton Eurovision, the year Abba won, to then moving to 2010, Oslo, where we meet Millie and James who are best friends, and then they have chance encounters with Noah and Ingrid. From which a pact is formed that the four will meet up at Eurovision every year going forward.
I absolutely adored all of these characters, and seeing how their lives changed over the span of the story, and in fact each time we meet up with them. They are in and out of relationships and their careers take various turns.
I'm incredibly envious of everything that both James and Ingrid end up doing with their lives.
And then there are romances, many unsuitable partners, after all how on earth could I diehard Eurovision fan, really envisage a long term relationship with someone who clearly doesn't get the contest at all.
Oh and the descriptions of the costumes, and how other fans were looking and what they were wearing, it just adds so much to the atmosphere of the book.
I just loved every single second of this story, and couldn't get enough of it. Pure escapist fun.
Thank you to Hodder & Stoughton and Netgalley for this copy which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.
Four strangers (well, two strangers and two friends!) meet in 2011 at the Grand Final of the Eurovision Song Contest, and a bond is built, with a pact made to meet every year to celebrate all that is wonderful about the contest.
Millie and James are best friends from England. They've grown up loving Eurovision due to a wonderful love story that started when Millie's grandparents met in the 60s at one of the finals.
Aggie is a German musician who holds a deep love for the contest, too, and is desperate to be a part of the whole process.
Noah is travelling, and there by chance, with no real interest in Eurovision.
The story spans over ten years as the quartet meets yearly in the city where the Grand final is due.
Over the years, dynamics change, relationships strengthen, crumble and sometimes get rebuilt.
There is great character development for each of the four individuals, who are so different in their ways but held together by this pact to meet every year.
Romance? Yes, there is a low, simmering love story for more than one of them, too!
I enjoyed this read, especially because Eurovision is one of those constants in my life since childhood!
Many thanks to NetGalley and Hodder & Stoughton for an ARC.
I'm a big eurovision fan, and I really enjoyed that it was the backdrop to these people's lives. Following along over the span of 12 years, the friendships and relationships, highs and lows, with the competition in the background, it was a really nice read.
Ah I absolutely adore this book!
Focusing on the chance meeting of 4 people, you are taken through 12 years of Eurovision and their lives.
I'm such a huge Eurovision fan so requesting this was a no- brainer. The book perfectly encapsulates why I love Eurovision. With the added bonus of a lovely story focusing on four people and their lives over 12 years.
Somewhere I'm The Crowd will have you laughing, crying and wanting to attend Eurovision!
I’ve always heard so much about Eurovision over the years so I knew as a semi new Brit that I had to pick this one up. It focuses on different people over the course of 10 plus years. We meet Millie, James, & Noah.
I love how it focuses on their lives and how they intertwine and the ups and downs that life challenges bring.
Yet they all come together as Eurovision become their “thing”. I related so much…I laughed, I cried, and I kept flipping the pages well into the night. I really enjoyed the writing style, consistent storyline, and the characters. The cover was very attractive as well. I feel readers who know and follow Eurovision well and those looking to learn more about it will quite enjoy this one,
I simply adored this book and could absolutely see it being made into a film! It is the perfect feel-good heartfelt rom-com with entertaining characters who are wellwritten. Brilliant!
I have never been a big fan of eurovision but this book made me want to go and have the best time. Such a wonderfully written story with some really fabulous characters.
Ok, so I admit that when I first saw that there was a book about Eurovision, I had to read it. I'm here for the cheese factor and "Somewhere in the Crowd" by Katrina Logan delivers this in the first few chapters. However, once you get into the swing of things: we follow a group of young people who make a pact to meet at Eurovision each year, it is quite touching to see how friendships and relationships develop. A lovely book about friends over many years with Eurovision just sitting in the background.
ARC received in exchange for an honest review.
This was adorable. I loved every single word. I’m pretty sure I smiled throughout the whole thing. There were a couple of heavier moments such is life but it was mostly pure joy. Music, friends, sequins. What more could you possibly need. I love Eurovision and I loved this book. What a balm to the soul this was.
