When Callie needs a break the air b&b is owned by Vanessa. Vanessa is an instagram influencer with the perfect home, perfect marriage and perfect grid! A friend, Rachel, from her past attempted to ruin her life and she is learning who to trust. Soon tragedy strikes which leaves people distraught and lives will change.
This was a gripping read that proves you shouldn’t trust what you see on social media.
Thank you to netgalley and the publishers for this arc in exchanges for my honest review.
A psychological thriller set around the friendship of Callie and Vanessa, a seemingly perfect wife and mother with a highly successful Instagram account. However all is not as it seems. Told in the present and in flashbacks, we learn more of the characters and things take a sinister term with the disappearance of Vanessa’s three-year-old son. Told with some are unreliable narrators this book is definitely a page turner. However, I’d worked out the culprit fairly on early on in the novel. which lessened the surprise/twist at the end however, this book does give you a lot to think about in regards to social media and how influencers present themselves. Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC of this novel in return for an honest review.
Callie has gone for a much-needed break to Whitstable, and is staying at an Airbnb organised by her mother. To her amazement, she finds out that the owner of the property is someone she follows on Instagram, the glamorous Vanessa, who is a well known social media influencer.
Callie becomes friends with Vanessa, and gets to spend time with her equally amazing family - her loyal husband and three lovely children, who seem to live a golden life. Well, apart from the occasional fly in the ointment, resulting from Vanessa's fame. Like Rachel, who went from being Vanessa's friend to her stalker. Or did she?
Because when Vanessa's youngest child Matthew disappears, Callie starts having her doubts about all this so-called perfection. She had spotted the occasional crack before, but now begins to wonder what the real story behind Matthew's disappearance is. Is Vanessa actually the distraught mother that she portrays herself as, or is there more to it?
One thing that was a little confusing for me were the dual timelines in the book , which weren't always well-demarcated. But it was very interesting to hear the story told from the viewpoints of Callie and Rachel. And overall, this was a compelling story. Well worth a read.
A touch overlong, but I honestly didn’t know who had done it. A timely tale about some damaging effects of wanting to appear perfect on social media.
A gripping domestic thriller, The Truth About Her is an engaging read with strongly developed but equally untrustworthy characters who make you question their every move.
The story is very layered with a lot to unpick. Each female has a relatable side, but they also have their own motives and agendas and unlikeable streaks which means that you have no idea whose point of view to trust.
I raced through this book as it was really easy to read. The fast-paced made the events all the more entertaining, and there's a lot of female-centred tension to keep the drama high.
At the minute, I don't know if I loved or felt annoyed with how the truth came out. Part of me was shocked, but part of me also thought that the twists could have been worked into the story a little better. The book takes a bit of a swerve in the final section, focusing on a new perspective to reveal the truth. While this meant that it wasn't easy to predict, I also think that this made it difficult for readers to try and figure things out for themselves.
However, the way the story ended was the most believable, compelling, and satisfying way that it could have concluded, so I think it paid off overall and I will definitely read more by Annie Taylor in the future!
Absolutely fantastic book that had me racing through the pages. Tension, twists and the unexpected make this an excellent read.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for the ARC in return for an honest and unbiased opinion.
I really liked the premise of this book and was looking forward to reading it. Although it was well written, for some reason I found it difficult to engage with the plot and the characters which was disappointing as it sounded a great read.
Thanks to netgalley and Michael Joseph for an advance copy of this book
I couldn't put this down and just when I thought it was over there was one final shocking twist.
Callie rents a cottage on the beach in Whitstable. She then finds it is owned by an influencer who has thousands of followers on Instagram.
She quickly becomes involved with the family the but behind the public portrayal there are cracks and Callie is soon sucked into the cracks and lies but to what consequence.

A modern thriller taking the lid off the glamourous/not-so-glamourous Instagram influencer life. A good read.
The Truth About Her by Annie Taylor is a book I have just finished and I am still reeling from the tension, the truth, the lies and the amazing twisted characters.
Superficially it is a story about a successful influencer on instagram, Vanessa is married to Justin and has three children, they live by the seaside town of Whitstable. Vanessa befriends Rachel and her husband and children, when they move into the area.
Then it all starts to go a wrong for Rachel, when Vanessa starts accusing her of various little incidents and then bigger ones until Rachel and her family move to Margate.
Callie stays at the newly renovated beach house owned by Vanessa and Justin, for two weeks before Christmas, after the death of her new born daughter after five days. Then she is dragged into a surreal incident when Vanessa’s youngest child Matthew goes missing, just days before Christmas. When he is found dead by drowning Callie is a suspect to his death and kidnapping.
The tension is amazing in this story and it continues right until the very end of the book. There are many twists and turns and assumptions that are all wrong until the very end, when the reader finally knows the truth.
Highly recommended
Wow, what a book!
This is a dark psychological thriller, with plenty of twists.
Callie is seeking solitude and a break from life, so books herself into a remote airbnb in Whitstable. The beach house belongs to glamorous Vanessa, an Instagram influencer, with a seemingly perfect life and perfect family.
Vanessa has previously had a feud with Rachel, and the story of this, together with Callie's relationship with Vanessa is told in dual timelines.
I really enjoyed this book. Make sure you take on board each chapter heading as it's essential to understanding what's going on.
I received an E-ARC with a request for my honest review.
This shocking crime thriller is set in Whitstable and follows Callie as she has booked a cabin to getaway from it all, before returning home to her Mum’s house.
Whilst getting supplies for the cabin she meets the owner of the cabin, Vanessa who she recognises as an online influencer. With an offer of dinner, Callie takes her up on her offer.
Suddenly, Vanessa’s son Matthew goes missing from their home in the middle of the night. Soon accusations
fly all over the place and Callie finds herself deep in the centre of the investigation.
Will they find Matthew? Who could have taken him?
This shocking crime thriller is filled with secrets as you look through Vanessa’s past with a previous acquaintance, whilst at the same time following the investigation into Matthew’s disappearance.
I found myself going through many of the characters as possible suspects, as the secrets and lies are revealed.
I felt for Callie, as all she wanted to have was some time to sort her head out on her own.
Overall, a shocking crime thriller following the investigation into a missing young boy.
After suffering a miscarriage six months previously Callie takes herself off to stay in an AirBnB on the beach at Whitstable. It is late in the year and the sense of foreboding is well portrayed through the seasonal weather descriptions, as are the characters, especially Vanessa, a local mother and Instagrammer who befriends Callie and welcomes her into her family: her husband Justin, and three children including 3 year old Matthew. But Vanessa's perfect life as displayed on social media is not all it seems and Callie finds herself drawn into the family's drama when Matthew disappears.
The story is set in two timelines and very easy to follow. I particularly enjoyed the use of social media in the narrative and the twist at the end of the book. A highly recommended read (with trigger warnings about miscarriage and child loss). Many thanks to NetGalley and Michael Joseph/Penguin Random House/Penguin for the opportunity to read and review The Truth About Her.
I am afraid this one was just average for me. Did not make me want to keeping reading longer to find out what was coming next as it definitely got repetitive. Perhaps too predictable. Just something missing.. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the chance to review it. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for chance to review it.
A twisty, dark book which had me hooked from the beginning. Some characters were very creepy and false. Set in Whitstable which I know well gave this book more meaning. Throughly enjoyed this one. My thanks to netgalley and the publishers for giving me the opportunity to read this book in return for an honest review.
I like how Annie sets the scene with atmospheric tension and detailed descriptions. This book is very easy to read and therefore hooked me in very early on.
⚠️TW: child loss, grief, stalker, arson, kidnapping, death, child abuse, verbal abuse
Callie has decided to stay in a secluded cabin to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city and escape her thoughts. She has recently lost a child of her own and seeks peace and quiet. Vanessa has a husband and three children and is a high profile content creator who owns the cabin Callie is staying in. They start to form a friendship and become close...
I like how lots of social media jargon is used and you are made to think in one moment what a detrimental affect having a large volume of followers and the addiction of things like Instagram has on your loved ones.
Everything appears to be perfect in Vanessa's life until she explains of a stalker who burned part of her house down. After Matthew her youngest goes missing suspicion is rife and things start to go awry...
This novel is two fold - one of Callie's perspective and the other Vanessa's ongoing events with her stalker as we go back in time up until the present day. Bonding first over their children they become firm friends. What went so terribly wrong in the time in-between? I really invested in Callie's story so this was the main hook for me.
The twists and turns were good and I was kept on my toes until right at the very end. I had an inkling of what the ending would be but the motive behind it was surprising. The build up to the end was almost too awful to read, I knew where it was going at this stage but my eyes just couldn't leave the page.
Very cleverly written, with characters I was very invested in from day one. A great novel - Annie Taylor is an author I'll be looking out for in the future.
A must read for thriller lovers. I am a fan.
Thank you NetGalley and Michael Joseph, Penguin Random House, Penguin for my advanced copy to read and review.
The story starts with Callie staying in a cottage by the beach in Whitstable after suffering a personal loss 6 moths ago. Although, she has no idea that The Getaway is owned by Vanessa and Justin Lowe till later.. Vanessa is a huge Instagram star with lots of followers. It is told over different time periods, starting with Rachel meeting Vanessa at the nursery school. Rachel recognised her from Instagram and introduced herself and soon they become close friends, The story follows the loss of Matthew Lowe the 3 year old son of Vanessa and Justin. No spoilers but it is a fast paced, well written book full of plot twists and turns with a surprise ending that I didn't see coming.
Another psychological thriller that kept me reading late into the night. How a friendship can turn into twisted behaviour and how social media can escalate something trivial until it becomes out of control. Full of twists and turns, strong characters and a good storyline. A well deserved four stars.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the Arc in return for an honest review.

I enjoyed The Truth About Her, it was very gripping and had me hooked. Another night I spent too long reading. Callie is back over in the UK for a 2 week break in Whitestable before joining her mother in London for Christmas. She is rapidly drawn into Vanessa's life despite being there to grieve for the death of her new born baby girl.
I like having the duel timeline and narrators, Rachel's story helps add to the tension who is telling the truth Vanessa, Rachel or Callie. There are lots of twists and turns and red herrings as Callie tries to help find Vanessa's son and then the culprit and protect all the families involved.
The characters and settings are all well developed, I really want to stay in Vanessa's AirBnB it sounds amazing
Callie is visiting the UK from America and staying in a fabulous beach front house in Whitstable, Kent. The reason for her visiting this isolated spot, is a tragic one and an opportunity to grieve and recuperate before heading to her mum for Christmas.
The house is owned by a glamorous couple; beautiful Instagrammer Vanessa and her husband and children. But, is the polished Insta image a true one?
This is a decent, suspense drama that I found easy to read. The social media elements created an interesting dynamic and offers a perspective of truth vs reality that I enjoyed. However, I also found it a slow and cumbersome read at times and so, for me, overall a decent 3* read.
Thanks to NetGalley and Michael Joseph Penguin Random House for the opportunity to preview.
