I'm typically not a fan of poetry, but this is actually a quick fun read. Many parts where I was uncomfortable and I'm not quite sure if that was the intention but it definitely did it well.

Really good poetry.
I struggle so much with poetry, I really want to like it so I try time and again to give it a go. It barely ever works and I end up feeling like I just don’t understand it. But then books like La Petite Mort come around and my hope is restored, absolutely brilliant!

La Petite Mort is a short collection of free verse poetry about a vampire longing for his eternal bride. The poems are, as you’d expect, melancholic and thematise death and the afterlife as well as love and lust. Did I find the poems groundbreaking? No. Did they stir my emotions? Some did, yes. We will never understand what it means to live eternally, but through art we can at least imagine what it could be like. Recommended to lovers of anything vampire who don’t shy away from free verse poetry.

While the premise of the book was interesting, the writing style didn't appeal to me. It was very typical old fashioned vampire. This may not have been my cup of tea, but I can imagine that a lot of readers will like this style of storytelling.

The premise of this book intrigued me. The poems themselves were written really well, and they had a pleasant rhythm and flow to them. I didn’t really get the gist of the story, but I respect the author’s attempt at trying something different. I also found the poems quite repetitive. However, I got an insight into the fictional vampire’s mind and what it could be like to face immortality, the sometimes unwanted craving for blood and the feelings associated with all of that. It’s quite common for vampires to be portrayed as inhuman, with no empathy or feelings, just an unquenchable thirst for blood with no regard to their victims’ life. But this book challenged that.

I went into this collection blind, not knowing of any previous works by the author. This books is a collection of poems from a vampires perspective, I appreciate the beauty of the wording within these poems even though some were a little repetitive at times.

The poems brought me to view the myth of a vampires life experience in new light. The depths of never ending immortality. Of a blood craving that is not wanted, but cannot be ignored. Of the sorrow for the blood drained victims. Of finding a love that could not last without a life altered. Of love lost, as change changes everything, and ultimately leaves us bereft.
