Thanks to Netgalley and Penguin Random House for access to this extract!

As a lifelong Percy Jackson fan, I was thrilled to read the first few chapters of The Sun and The Star. It felt so nostalgic to be diving back into this world, yet refreshing to see it through another character's eyes. I loved getting more insight into Nico's thoughts and feelings, and I was completely hooked from the first few pages - I'll definitely be picking the book up to finish it!

I had so much fun reading this book that I finished it in two days. I love the characters and especially the development they go through in the course of the book.

Another great book by Rick Riordan! It's the story I've wanted since seeing Nico with Will and it didn't disappoint.

This sample of five chapters really gave a taste of what was to come, and the book itself was action non-stop and some heart-aching moments. Exciting and filled with adventure!

My son and I read this sampler courtesy of Netgalley and I can say that it has confirmed that we need to go and buy a copy! My son was disappointed when we finished.
There is nothing quite like the skill of writing of Rick Riordan to hook us in. We have everyone of his books and this one will be joining them.

Is anyone surprised that this is amazing so far?

We all know Rick Riordan is bloody brilliant. And any opportunity to return to the world's he creates is a welcome one!

Really can't wait to get my hands on the full book here.

Thanks for the sneak peek!

Wonderful from Rick Riordan as always! I’ll definitely be picking up a full copy of the sun & the stars after reading this sample through NetGalley. A classic mix of his signature humour and engaging plot and I’m looking forward to seeing what happens in the rest of the book!!

I’m upset I left this so long to read however it does mean I can go straight out and buy the full book! Ive love the character of Nico since the Percy Jackson series so love that he’s getting his own books, i can’t wait to see the quest that he and Will are facing.

This was an exciting start to a very promising book. I am very much looking forward to this coming out in paperback!

Disappointed this was just a sampler, I didn't realise until it arrived in my kindle but I should have known it was too good to be true! Really enjoyed this anyway, I am a die-hard Percy Jackson world reader so will definitely be getting the whole book later.

Completely gutted this was just a sampler! When I got to the end and knew I couldn't carry on immediately I was devastated - I was completely hooked in just these first few chapters. It's been a long time since I've read a book in the Percy Jackson series but I was drawn right back in - there were a few references that I had to try and assimilate with old memories, so your experience would probably be better if you had better knowledge of the other books in the universe, but I made do! Really excited to read the rest!

Nico wasnine of my favourite characters and I was really excited to read about his and Will's relationship and his chance to have his own prophecy.

Unfortunately, this was only a sample, so I obviously had to go out and buy the hard cover (which frustrates me - that the paperback takes so long to be published...)

After only reading a small sample of this book, I am very excited to read the full novel both for my enjoyment and to recommend to my students. I always recommend the original Percy Jackson series of novels to my students when we teach a Greek Myths unit, so I am looking forward to having another amazing book centred around the myths to add to my class reading list

It's been a long time since I've read a Rick Riordan story, but this looks as good as ever.

Following the adventure of Nico and Will, Camp Half Blood and all things mythological.

An enticing snippet from a new installment in the Percy Jackson universe. While this book does not seem to be aimed towards me as the target demographic anymore, I know that this will be a perfect addition for more middle grade aged readers.

I'd forgotten that this was only a sampler! I raced through it so quickly once I'd learned about the prophecy that I now need to look out for the book so that I find out what happens next.
Thank you for reminding me how much I enjoy immersing myself in the world of Percy Jackson.

I was so excited to read another installment of the Percy Jackson chronicles, and a gay one at that! Beautiful!

However, I'm not sure if my nostalgia has made me entirely forget the writing, if I've learned more about writing for children since then, or if this writing genuinely is of poorer quality than before, but I found it really quite difficult to read.

The first thing we're taught when we learn how to write is "Show, don't tell." and I wanted to beat Riordan around the chops with the phrase (I'm so sorry, Mr Riordan).

I didn't need to be told that Will was Nico's boyfriend, I wanted to see it.
I didn't want to be awkwardly told Austin Lake's surname or his relation to Nico.
I didn't need to know Kayla's surname or parentage as though it was the focus of the moment.
I wanted to hear their dialogue and see some interaction or action find information out more naturally. That's how I'm motivated to keep reading.
If your writing is good you can give your readers some credit and allow them to figure out the details while you tantalisingly drip information along the way for them to snatch up as they run.

If this stuff is entirely necessary to understanding the first few chapters then include a character list at the start, or add a paragraph entirely describing the family/social structure here.

It's frustrating to me, because I am almost entirely certain that there's an incredible story underneath all of this. I just found it too hard to find between the unnecessary character bios.
As it is, the opening chapter reads like a recap of information about characters when all I wanted and needed to see right there was a hook. If the opening is interesting and compelling then I'll want to know more about them.

Moving past the opening, there is some great and funny dialogue, but again, this reads like mid-book, not opening chapter!

I would have started the book with the dream at the start of chapter three and then drip-fed the rest.

I'm so sorry. I really hate giving bad reviews, but I'm hoping you'll save this book before it gets published!!!

Tl;Dr - Surnames and labels are boring, hook me in plz. I am a fish waiting for you to catch it, but you forgot the bait.

The Percy Jackson series was what really made me fall in love with reading as a kid. So I‘m not surprised that reading this teaser for the new series in the universe gave me an intense feeling of nostalgia. Now I’m debating rereading the other books before starting this one because I think I‘ll enjoy it even more with a refreshed memory about everything that happened (I read the books in 2007, and to think that makes this 16 years ago is crazy).
