This is the first book that I have read by this author. The psychological aspect of the characters is really good and the book is very fast paced. For me the only thing that lets it down is that the sequence of events seem to be a little far-fetched but the author certainly keeps you attached to the story and makes you want to carry on to the end to find out what happens. There are many twists and turns along the way.
I love how more and more authors are making it so difficult for us to write reviews without giving away anything about the story. This shows the quality of the writing.
If you like UK crime mixed with a psychological thrillers you will really enjoy this book.
Many thanks to the publishers, NetGalley and the author for providing me with an advanced copy, in electronic format, in return for an honest, unbiased review.
The Fall is published on the 25th May and will be available in e-book, audiobook and hardcover formats
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and found it engaging throughout. The plot was really good and I like the flashbacks to the day of the death which let the story build up in layers.
There are many ways to, and many kinds of 'fall'. This book covers quite a few of them. The characters appear to somehow be fluid; just as the reader begins to feel aware of a player's traits and flaws, whoops! There goes the carpet straight from under your feet and a stranger is left lying at your feet. This book has not just twists but twirls and is difficult to leave ..... " just another page......a few minutes.......
Cleverly written, a story to remember. A lottery win! Deliverance or disaster?
I would like to thank Netgalley and Random House UK, Cornerstone for an advance copy of The Fall, a stand-alone thriller set on the Lancaut peninsula, Gloucestershire.
Nicole and Tom have won ten million pounds on the lottery and built a beautiful home, known as the Glass Barn on ground bought from Lancaut manor. They have a happy life until Tom is found dead in the swimming pool with a head wound. Suspects are thin on the ground with only the couple at Lancaut Manor and their housekeeper nearby.
I thoroughly enjoyed The Fall once I got into it. It didn’t catch my attention at the beginning, so I put it down more than once in favour of something more immediately appealing, but once I got past the first 20% or so it started to weave its magic web and I was hooked.
I don’t really know how to describe the novel without giving away spoilers, but it gradually unspools some horrendous behaviour that I found difficult to read and finishes with some extremely satisfying karmic twists. It is told from various points of view, including flashbacks to the hours before Tom’s death and some journal entries recounting events from the past five years. It switches between all the various points of view regularly and with ease. This works well as the reader wants to know what’s coming next in each thread. Suffice to say that no one except the detectives is as first presented. They all have secrets and are capable of much more than is suspected at first sight.
This is a novel of misdirection and false fronts. I was impressed by the steady way the author strips away facades and shows the true nature of the characters.
The Fall is a good read that I can recommend.
The Fall is a phenomenal thriller from start to finish. Gilly Macmillan has done it again! Filled to the brim with twists and a captivating plot, this one is sure to keep readers hooked. The characters are well-developed. The story is incredibly fast-paced. This is one not to be missed! Highly recommended! Be sure to check out The Fall asap.
Tom and Nicole experience a life changing event, but then tragedy strikes. I liked the story of Tom and Nicole and found parts of the book genuinely sad. I found the twist in the story quite intriguing; the story showed how big an impact small manipulations can cause when someone is being abused.
⭐️⭐️⭐️ 3 average stars. This book started well but half way through it started to slow down and the ending was such an anti climax I feel a bit cheated
Many thanks to NetGalley, Random House UK and Gilly Macmillan for my ARC of "The Fall' in return for an honest review.
Tom and Nicole had a £10 million lottery win, built a glass barn in the countryside and have been living a life of luxury. Tom is found dead lying face down in the pool by Nicole one morning.
Nicole seeks out the closest neighbours, Sasha and Olly, to help and together with their house keeper Kitty they look after her. She calls Tom's best friend, Patrick, who had a difficult relationship with the couple due to the winnings and he arrives to comfort the widow.
This is a clever plot and told from several POVs keeps the reader intrigued.

I can see a lot of people reading this on their summer holidays. Interesting characters and a good writing style with enough twists to keep the reader interested makes this a fun page turner. I did feel slightly underwhelmed by the ending, but on the whole a good read.
Thank you to netgalley and Random house for an advance copy of this book.
The Fall by Gilly Macmillan follows the lives of Tom and Nicole, a couple whose lives are forever changed after winning £10 million on the lottery. Their dream of living in a state-of-the-art Glass Barn conversion turns into a nightmare when Tom is found dead in their swimming pool. The police investigate and the case becomes complex as they try to determine who among the people closest to them is capable of murder.
The book is an easy and gripping read, with each chapter told from the perspective of a different character.
The characters are well-developed, and the story is well-described, making it easy to picture the modern glass house in its beautiful rural setting. The book explores the mental and emotional impact of sudden wealth on relationships and how it can affect one's perception and treatment by others.
While the whodunnit part of the story may be predictable, there are plenty of unexpected twists that keep readers guessing. The story touches on a range of themes, including love, loss, jealousy, and deception.
Overall, The Fall is a great, twisty, and captivating story that is highly recommended for anyone who enjoys a goo
Once you’re on top it’s a long way down
Nicole and Tom are living the dream, after winning the lottery they now live in a dream house they designed themselves. The dream soon turns into a nightmare through when Tom’s body is found in their pool. Nicole welcomes the support of her neighbours but it soon becomes clear they aren’t quite what they seem.
An enjoyable read but unfortunately not a page turner for me. Thanks to @netgalley for the opportunity to read it.

I have read many Gilly Macmillan novels before and always enjoyed the story and characters and this was no different.
We meet Nicole who is happily married to Tom, she is on her way home to their luxurious Glass Barn where they live after winning a lot of money on the lottery and Nicole gets home after a day out and finds her husband dead in their beautiful pool.
Nicole is obviously in shock and she runs down the lane to The Manor House where Olly, Sasha and their housekeeper Kitty reside.
The police believe that Tom may have been murdered and this sets off a string of events and we get to learn about the other character in the novel. Each chapter is told through a different characters perspective including Anna who used to be the owner of The Manor House. We learn how Olly and Sasha became to live in the house and we also learn the circumstances that happened on the run up to Tom's death.
I did figure out who may have killed Tom earlier on in the book, but the main twist I did not see and thought it was a really good change in the novel.
Thanks to NetGalley, the publishers and Gilly Macmillan for allowing me a copy of this novel in exchange for my honest review.
New money, old mansions, new designs, old secrets, new friends...murder, intrigue, and deception...Read it!
Nicole and Tom are living in their dream home, a modern barn finished to the highest spec, it has a gym, a sauna, an outdoor pool, high technology sound and security system.. They are lottery winners. Life is very good, even though Tom is a little bored and misses his old life a little.
Things start to go horribly wrong when Nicole arrives home, opera music is playing loudly, she follows it from room to room in search of Tom, she is frustrated that she can’t get voice command to work to turn the music down. She finds Tom face down in the pool, it is obvious that he is dead, nothing she does will change that, she still runs to her neighbours for help
Sasha an Olly also live in a grand house, The Manor, with their housekeeper Kitty living in the Coach house. They will all be suspects.
This murder mystery definitely has lots of surprises and twists, nothing is as it seems, so many secrets, the book is narrated in multiple timelines and different point of views. As the story unfolds, secrets are revealed, lies and coercion come to light,
The characters are intense, some more likeable than others and some of the characters have their own stories.
I found the over all plot a little far fetched, but still a good read.
Many thanks to Net Galley and Random House UK for an ARC of this book in exchange for a review.
3.5 stars. My first book by this author but I would read more.
Thanks to Netgalley for giving me this book in exchange for an honest and fair review.
I loved this book. It was a fast-paced thriller that kept me thinking right up until the end. I did not think I would like it at first but I definitely did by the end. If you don't have a lot of time to read this then I would wait lol it is definitely a book that holds you from start until finish.
I found this to be an interesting, gripping read about a couple who have won the lottery and moved to an amazing 'Smart House' in the countryside. Their neighbours become friends and when one of the couple is found dead, secrets emerge.
It's very well written and all of the characters have depth and I found it to be a gripping psychological drama that held my interest.
Thanks to Random House UK, Cornerstone and congratulations to the author.
Fabulous read in one-sitting psychological thriller, really enjoyed it! Im a fan of everything that Gilly has written and this is up there with the best of her work.
Tom and Nicole are literally lottery winners and have invested in a state of the art architectural dream out in the Gloucestershire countryside.
Their only neighbours are Olly and Sasha, who live in a historic mansion - he's an author, she's a yoga teacher, and they live a wonderful life themselves, supported by their loyal housekeeper Kitty.
Nicole comes home one day to find Tom floating lifelessly in their pool - and when the police investigate, the list of suspects is pretty small, as they are based in such a remote location.
The story is told from multiple viewpoints and from both households, as well as the police investigation into what soon spirals into something much bigger than first suspected. The characters were great fun to read about - noone is quite what they seem at first
The plot twists were right up my street, I can imagine the author having great fun working out all of the twists and turns as she went.
4 stars from me!
Loved this book, a difficult one to review without spoilers, but it's a cracking read. Complex characters and situations that keep you guessing to the end.
This is the first Gilly Macmillan I've read and it won't be the last.
Highly recommend.
I haven't read any books by this author before, but will look out for them now, after enjoying this psychological thriller.
Nicole and Tom were happy and content with their relationship and life in general. Then they had a lottery win of ten million pounds, and life changed. They move house, into a state of the art, voice activated, glass barn conversion, in the grounds of a Manor House, complete with it's own grounds and swimming pool. The swimming pool where Tom is found floating, dead with a head wound.
The only other people around are a young couple who live in the Manor House itself, and their housekeeper, who lives in the coach house next door. Which of them would want Tom dead, and why?
This is a real page turner, a mystery which keeps you guessing.
When you’ve never had a huge amount of money but suddenly win the jackpot life changes in an instant. Friends treat you differently, you don’t know who to trust and life can be lonely. So you build your dream home and start to befriend the wealthy young couple in the Manor House next door but then disaster strikes and this time you really don’t know who to trust…
After a steady start this book suddenly gets interesting and you won’t want to put it down.
