First book by this author and was pleasantly surprised. I love thrillers and this hit the spot. Would always say I fancied a lottery win and thought a big house and swimming pool would be fantastic. Think I’ve changed my mind! Love the writing style and how quickly I got into this
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This is a strange book. It had the possibility to be really good, with some great ideas, but it was not well executed. There are far too many POVs, nine, I think. The short chapters offering different POVs lead to an impression of chaos, then the story frequently returns to ‘Five Years Ago’ alluding to whatever happened then, which doesn’t help. It all combines so that the narrative does not flow, it’s just disjointed.
Add to that a cast of thoroughly dislikable characters, and the main character Nicole being naive and immature beyond belief, I found it hard to continue with this book. The characterisation is weak, I got no real sense of any of the main players.
The storyline becomes more and more implausible, until it just becomes ridiculous.
Not for me, this one, though I am probably in the minority. I’m sure other readers will enjoy it.
My thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for my advance copy of this book.
“A Gripping, Creepy Read!”
My first Gilly Macmillan novel so was unsure what to expect. I thoroughly enjoyed this.
I wouldn't say there was one main protagonist here (more like 5) but their stories all intertwine at different stages in the story.
Nicole and Tom, new lottery winners are settling into their beautiful new home when tragedy strikes and Nicole finds Tom dead in their swimming pool. They have neighbours close by, Sasha and Olly, who they don't know that well but they're the only ones (along with their housekeeper) who Nicole can turn to during this desperate time. Who would want to hurt Tom and why?
Delicious amounts of psychological suspense and subjects like coercive control are at the forefront here. I picked up the reading pace after a few chapters and found myself literally hungry for answers and justice. I did find the ending came pretty abruptly but the epilogue rounded everything off nicely. I would definitely read another Gilly Macmillan novel. Loved it. ♥️
Nicole and Tom have recently moved into the impressive Glass Barn after a large lottery win and are living their dream life until it all changes when Tom is found floating in the pool. Nicole seeks help with her neighbours next door, the only people who live close by. Was this an accident or was something much more sinister at play?
From the synopsis I imagined the story may be quite generic but I found this wasn’t the case at all. The plot was interesting and it went in directions I wasn’t expecting. There were plenty of surprises and one especially that I didn’t foresee. The story was entertaining with some unloveable characters thrown in to cause some tension.
Although I enjoyed the majority of this book, I did find that you are introduced to a lot of characters all at once, with different point of views in each chapter and this was a bit confusing at first. It also took me a while to warm to the writing style but once I did I had a fun time reading this. I have a few other books by Gilly Macmillan on my shelves and after reading this I’ll make sure to push them up my list to read. Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this advance copy in return for an honest review.
Tom and Nicole have recently moved into their new mansion. Tom is found dead a few days later and Nicole is left all alone, This book is full of twists and turns, and excellent sub plots. A well written and gripping read this is not to be missed! Thanks to Netgalley for the opportunity to read this brilliant book
A tale with a difference- don’t expect having lots of money from winning the lottery brings happiness and a great life. I enjoyed this story with a twist at the end.
A character-led tale of deception. Unfortunately, the twists piled up and left me with a sense of just too many incredible situations to really be plausible.
Lottery winners Nicole and Tom led a quiet life in Swindon. Now they’ve moved to the newly built home of their dreams in the beautiful Gloucestershire countryside. Unfortunately, when Nicole returns home to find Tom dead in the pool it quickly becomes a nightmare.
Nicole’s neighbours, Sasha and Olly, have a vested interest in seeming helpful. As the story progresses we learn why.
The housekeeper Kitty has her own story. As does Tom’s childhood friend, Patrick. As does the mysterious camper regularly seen in the grounds of the Manor House prior to Tom’s death.
Fast-paced and while it was entertaining, it had just become stretched too far by the end.
Thanks to NetGalley for giving me opportunity to read and review this.
just reviewed The Fall by Gilly Macmillan. #TheFall #NetGalley And it’s an absolute CORKER!!!
Brilliant book, well-written, fast-paced and full of twists! Just how I like em!
A must-read for anyone who likes a good psychological thriller to keep you on your toes and your little grey cells moving!
Read it! Devour it!
What a fantastic read. Gilly Macmillan has taken the long con to new levels.
It was easy to follow what started as Kitty being tough on Anna to get her back out into the world. Then things started to get complicated and confusing.
And the sheep. I spent the time from Tom secreting the sheep wondering if it would ever be found. I was relieved when it was, but I think Nicole should have told Hal and given him a happy ending.
As for the ending. I never saw that coming!
Really enjoyed this. An author I haven’t read before but will now read more of her stuff. Suspenseful, lots of twists in the tale. Ending was good. Unexpected and feel good.
A brilliant thriller. Well written and either no slow parts just an all round good book. Would always say I fancied a lottery win and thought a big house and swimming pool would be fantastic. Think I’ve changed my mind!
Having recently finished Adele Parks’ domestic suspense novel ‘Just My Luck’ that explores what a huge lottery win does to a group of friends who are part of a syndicate, I was intrigued what fellow author Gilly MacMillan would do with the same subject matter. What I encountered was a very different kind of novel. Firstly, it focuses intently on just one relationship – the relationship between married couple Nicole and Tom, who are the recipients of the lottery win and who waste no time spending it on a luxury home on a Welsh peninsula, with a swimming pool of course. Tragedy strikes, however, when Nicole returns home from work one day to find her husband drowned in the pool they had prized as a status symbol. What roles do their new neighbours Sasha and Olly play in his demise? How far will Tom’s alleged friend Patrick go to extract more money from Nicole? And what does housekeeper Kitty know that she is not revealing?
Although some passages of this novel were too descriptive for my liking, I enjoyed this narrative of what happens when untold riches drop into the lap of unprepared, uncritical ordinary human beings. The novel left me with a very definite sense of ‘be careful what you wish for’!
Thank you, NetGalley and the publishers, for the ARC you gifted me to complete this unbiased book review.
What a great thriller from start to finish. There were so many twists and turns that kept you guessing the whole time. Great injustices were also wrapped up within the story.
The plot was so intriguing and as it unfolded throughout so the story just got better and better. There were also so many stories within the main story which kept it fresh and exciting. Some of them were quite shocking but very believable.
The characters were very good so you invested in each one even if they were good or bad. Great ending too.
An excellent story which I would recommend to anyone
A book that keeps you guessing. Not your average thriller.
Who can you trust? Can you trust anyone?
I did slow in the middle of the book, but the pace picks up again.
A lot happens in this book, from the beginning right up until the end! I did feel like the story was too chaotic at times, and hard to follow, but it was still not a bad read
This was a really good thriller filled with lies and betrayals!
I was immediately intrigued by the plot and the cast of characters. We follow a lot of different POVs which helped the story flow and I enjoyed reading it. The writing was good and the characters were all well written.
The book follows a main plot of who killed Tom but there are a few other smaller plots which interested me more - I won’t say much because I dont want to spoil anything! I was suspicious of every character at times and there were definitely some shocking reveals and twists.
Overall I enjoyed it - my favourite thing about it were actually the characters. The ending was very satisfying too
Winning the lottery can often be the opposite result of what's expected. This book lays bare exactly what can go wrong. I'm glad I don't play.
Gilly Macmillan certainly proves that winning the lottery doesn’t guarantee lasting happiness.
We knew right at the start what happened to Nicole and Tom but Gilly kept us guessing right to the end for the identity of the culprit with lots of twists along the way. Thoroughly enjoyed it.
This was a great read and I read it in a day.
The premise seemed simple, lottery winners Nicole & Tom, a remote house and and an unexpected death. What do Sasha and Olly from the Manor House have to do with it?
The book is told from multiple POV and in two timelines. The author keeps throwing twists at you, once you feel you have an idea a curveball changes everything.
Definitely worth a read!
Thanks to Random House and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Wow the twists and surprises just kept coming thick and fast in this stunning mystery thriller by the talented Gilly Macmillan and its a belter of a read.
Nicole and Tom have built their stunning dream home after winning the lottery and they have everything they ever dreamed of but when Nicole arrives home after visiting a local agricultural show and finds her husband dead in the swimming pool everything starts to go horribly wrong.
Well nothing in this book is what it seems and told from multiple timelines and different perspectives it certainly had me guessing as just what was going on . It’s certainly an extremity well crafted read as little by little things become to fall into place and secrets are revealed and complex series of lies and coercion are exposed. I found the book to be a great read and one that kept me thinking and a well thought out plot and characters made it a read that I would highly recommend .
My thanks to NetGalley and Random House UK, Cornerstone, Century for giving me the opportunity to read the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
