Full of twists and turns this book is a rollercoaster of a read. The twists kept coming and each was a surprise.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for the ARC in return for an honest and unbiased opinion.
My thanks to NetGalley and Random House for a copy of “ The Fall “ by Gilly MacMillan.
After being disappointed by Gilly MacMillan’ s previous couple of books I found this book a return to her usual high standard .I thought it was really well paced , and full of twists and turns and it kept me guessing right to the very satisfying ending.
Highly recommended
I greatly enjoyed this book which had me hooked from the beginning. It is full of twists and turns and some really excellent characterization. A really fast paced adn enjoyable read.
Thank you to the author, publisher and to Netgalley for this opportunity to review an arc.
Money doesn’t buy you happiness as Nicole and Tom are just finding out. After a £10 million lottery win, Nicole gets to buy her dream home in the country, however when Tom is found dead in the pool things start to unravel and we discover not everyone or everything is at seems to be.
This book has dedicated chapters to characters which some people don’t like but I love this style of writing as it allows you to really get to know characters and all their inner most thoughts. Each character is superbly written although some are more relatable than others.
The story focuses on a lot of topics such as greed, jealousy, coercive behaviours, love, trust and secrets. There are three main couples, Nicole and Tom, their neighbours Olly and Sasha and the working partnership of Detectives Hal and Jen. The dynamics of all three are so vastly different and is very interesting to see how they develop throughout.
The Fall is a gripping psychological thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat with its multiple twists and turns. It has complex and well-developed plot, with clues being dropped throughout. The story takes readers on a rollercoaster ride of suspense and intrigue, making it a must-read for thrillers and with an ending that you may not see coming.
No surprise that on winning the Lottery, Nicole and husband Tom have left their suburban lives in Swindon to build a “Grand Designs” style glass barn in the Wye valley. But tragedy strikes as Tom is found dead in the swimming pool and all is not as it seems up at the Manor House.
The story rattles along told from the perspective of a host of characters and whilst some of the twists are guessable, others come as a genuine surprise. A clever plot has the reader sympathising for different people at different times - on occasions when they might not deserve it.
This is the first book I have read by this author but will be back for more
A well written psychological thriller but I did have difficulty at first when characters were introduced. How we all dream of winning the lottery but for Tom and Nicole their dream turned into a nightmare. Yes, it enabled them to buy the beautiful glass barn but when Nicole returns home to find Tom dead in the swimming pool it becomes a case of who can she trust. The Manor House is their closest neighbours and like a lot of old Manor House’s it has secret passages then there are twists and turns woven into the plot. If you enjoy psychological thrillers you will enjoy this one
This was kindly sent to me as ARC from NetGalley.
It was a very very good, fast paced book. The only thing i didnt like was the multiple POVs as it was so often and it was hard remembering who was who but its a very good story
Would you ever consider murder? Are there circumstances that could trigger thoughts of murder? But could you actually do the deed? This suspense thriller embraces this conundrum and the outcomes do not surprise!
This is the proverbial page-turner with so many twists on the way. At the start, Tom and Nicole have just won big on the lottery. They have moved from a suburban estate house to an architect-designed (a la Grand Design) property overlooking the Wye. In mysterious circumstances, Tom is found dead in their swimming pool. Nicole is devastated at the loss. She has been very happily married and is finding it difficult to overcome her grief. Enter the neighbours who live in the grand Manor House. Sasha and Olly and the housekeeper Kitty are very supportive initially.
However, Sasha and Olly are very manipulative and coercive. We soon realise that they have designs on Nicole’s property. Kitty seems to have a mysterious past too. The detectives are on the case. Some of the evidence/clues are pointing in numerous directions and they are soon bogged down in a complex case. Nothing is as it seems in The Fall and some of the evidence falls away as there are innocent explanations.
We soon learn that Sasha and Olly have coerced the original owner, Anna, of the Manor House to move to the Coach House and become their housekeeper. In the process, she assumes the name of Kitty. But what has happened to the real Kitty? Murder?
Nicole and Anna (now Kitty) begin to fight back against Olly and Sasha. Who will murder who? Will the detectives solve the case before more murders?
The number of twists will keep you guessing right to the last page. Who will you be rooting for at the end of the story? Would you have committed murder? This is a great read with a moral maze to contemplate.
Unsure how I feel about this one. It started off really strong and was certainly very readable, but I struggled to connect with any of the characters and as the story progressed, it became increasingly far fetched. To the point that the ending just felt ridiculous.
What a great book. A thriller mystery with so many twists and turns - few of which I predicted. Different from the normal run of thrillers and a very enjoyable read. Will definitely look for more novels by this author.
I love Gilly Macmillan's books - she's one of a handful of authors that can do no wrong for me, and I always rush to download her latest novel! "The Fall" is no exception - beautifully plotted, devious, and full of twists and turns,
Tom and Nicole are a normal working-class couple. Until, that is, they win £10 million on the lottery. The two of them move into a bespoke, state of the art barn conversion in a beautiful rural location, and it seems like their lives have changed for the better. But then Nicole comes home one afternoon to find Tom's body in the pool, and her life as she knew it is turned upside down.
At first, Nicole assumes that it must have been a terrible accident, but Tom's head wound might suggest otherwise. But Tom doesn't have any enemies...or does he?
I really enjoyed this well paced, well plotted thriller, with the alternative POVs and multiple (variously unreliable) narrators. It's beautifully written, and completely engaging - I was annoyed every time I had to put it down! I loved the gradual reveal and the genuinely surprising twists - another thriller I will be highly recommending from one of my favourite authors.
Thank you to NetGalley and to the publisher, who granted me a free ARC copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.
This is a very well-plotted gripping thriller about loneliness, coerecive control, resentment, greed and murder. An easy yet obsessive read that flowed well with multiple POV characters but always easy to follow. The characters were well-developed and most of them felt 'off' and unreliable, which meant they all seemed a little suspicious.
The location near the River Wye was very vivid and added to the drama with two impressive buildings set in glorious rural surroundings. The Manor is an imposing historic house with many secret passages and hiding places, while The Barn is an ultra modern recent conversion by lottery winners with a great deal of glass and smart features. There is also a small Coach House on the grounds for the housekeeper (Kitty) to live nearby.
All is not as it seems at The Manor where the lonely and vulnerable owner Anna once missed her dead husband and the current self-absorbed occupants smugly rule the roost. Sasha teaches yoga in the main hall and Olly has been writing his literary fiction novel in the study for years and they expect it to be a best seller.
Tom and Nicole had a combined income of £42K in Swindon before they won £10M on the lottery. They converted The Barn into their dream home and have been living there for 6 months before Tom is found by Nicole floating face down in the swimming pool.
The characters have plenty of secrets and there is a great deal of complexity surrounding all of their relationships. The story has many twists and turns throughout and even more surprises at the end. The alternating POV chapters leave you hanging and wanting to find out what happens next.
Many thanks to the publisher, author and NetGalley UK for the ARC.
I loved this book! I’m a big fan of Gilly Macmillan’s thrillers and this one is my favourite so far. It has all the ingredients of an excellent thriller and I kept sneaking back to my kindle to read another few pages when I should have been doing other things.
Nicole and Tom, lottery winners, have built a fantastic glass barn on the Lancaut Peninsula. Their new life should be amazing but it’s quite an isolated spot with only Olly and Sasha in the Manor House as neighbours. When Nicole discovers Tom floating lifeless in the swimming pool, she is plunged into a nightmare.
The Fall held my attention throughout. It’s an original and contemporary thriller with interesting characters, a beautiful setting, lots of twists and turns and a very satisfying ending.
The Fall by Fully Macmillan
A brilliant read that has you on the edge of you seat from the off.
Nicole and Tom's lives are changed overnight by a ten-million-pound lottery win.
Everyone's dream , or is it ?
Before they know it they've moved into a state-of-the-art Glass Barn conversion in the stunning grounds of Lancaut Manor in Gloucestershire.
But their dream quickly turns into a nightmare when Tom is found dead in the swimming pool, with a wound on his head.
I loved the plot of this book which is a dream for many of us , but as in real life , a massive life changing win is more often or not life changing in a good way.
A good few tense moments and just when you think you have it solved the author adds a little something to send you down another path.
Gripping and cleverly plotted.
Twists and turns and a sense of disorientation make this a great read. Nobody (and I mean nobody) is quite who you expect them to be.
Bodies in ponds, secret passages in the walls, a modern glass house that is as creepy, if not creepier, than the old manor house, make this a compelling book. Well-developed characters and great locations keep the reader interested.
Oh, and there's a life-size model sheep.
Loved this book very mysterious, I read this in one sitting could not put it down , I lived this authors style of writing so much I will be reading more of her work and certainly recommending it to all my book pals as think they will love it just as much as me.
A scarily believable story about coercive control with many twists and shocking secrets. I really enjoyed this psychological thriller and look forward to reading more by Gilly MacMillan.
Thank you to Netgalley and Random House for this ARC.
Nicole and Tom win a massive amount on the lottery, they buy land in her dream location and build a dream property with all mod cons.
When Tom is found floating in the swimming pool the race is on to find out what happened.
The neighbours at the manor are soon involved in the case and it becomes apparent that nicole doesnt know who she can trust.
I loved this book and raced through it, it was very well written and I was rooting for the truth to come out and the baddies to get their comeuppance.
Thanks to netgalley and the publishers for this arc.
4 stars
This book started strongly, a couple who the lottery are living in their newly built dream home. However their dream home is about to become a crime scene. On a hot summers day, a body is found floating face down in the pool.
I am a bit conflicted on this one, after the strong start, the pacing slowed way down on this one and the first half of the book was a slow read. A number of characters are introduced and while they are well developed there a not a lot of them leading to very little suspense as this tale unfolds. There are a number of twists as the story progresses and the pace ramps up again in the second half of the book and kept me guessing a little but the introduction of a late character felt a little convenient to the plot. The best characters and most the most authentic were the two police officers working the murder case. The strongest section of the book was its conclusion although it was a little shaky, it was a satisfying conclusion.
I thought the author handled the writing on coercive control well and it was obvious time had been spent researching and gaining an understanding of this form of abuse and overall the writing is strong throughout.
I think the book would have been a better read if it was one hundred pages shorter and faster paced but it held my interest and was a decent enough read.
Love this author!
To start with i got really confused as to who was who and the story goes back and forth so had to concentrate.
Certainly glad i did, a real creepy read.
Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for my early copy.
A five star psychological thriller.
