A thoroughly enjoyable read.
A body is discovered floating face down in a swimming pool.
Was it murder, was it an accident ?
There are a number of potential suspects if it transpires to be murder.
Flashing back and forth covering the last five years or so, the intrigue develops and you're left wondering is anyone actually who or what they appear to be.
A very solid four stars.
The Fall opens with the discovery of a body. Lottery winner Nicole returns home to the luxurious home, on which she and her husband, Tom, have recently finished construction, to find Tom’s body floating face down in the natural swimming pool.
From here, the novel splinters into several narrative perspectives, including that of the neighbours at the Manor House to whom Nicole runs for help: extracts from the diary of a former owner of the Manor House; and the police detectives charged with investigating Tom’s death. The satisfaction for me came in seeing how all of these perspectives and timelines converge and begin to make sense of the events surrounding Tom’s fall into the pool.
To say much more would be to spoil one of the many twists. Highly recommended for fans of pacy, well plotted thrillers.
This is a well written, tightly plotted read that deserves to do well. That said, I was a bit confused at times as to who was who. Nonetheless it’s definitely one to read!
If you enjoy a well plotted psychological thriller, then you are going to love ‘The Fall’ by Gilly Macmillan! Set on the beautiful Lancaut nature reserve next to the river Wye in Wales, lottery winners Tom and Nicole are enjoying a new life in their extravagantly converted high-spec barn. However, it’s difficult to make friends in a sparsely populated area even though they are open, friendly people. Just up the road live Olly and Sasha in Lancaut Manor; he’s writing a novel and she teaches yoga whilst their housekeeper, Kitty, runs the place. Whilst they don’t have Tom and Nicole’s millions, their ancient pile and their innate sense of style makes them feel superior to their neighbours.
When Tom is found floating face down in his swimming pool, Nicole’s gut reaction is to run to the manor house for help. And after that, everything begins to slowly unravel.
This is a tightly plotted, gripping story about coercive control, entitlement and loneliness. I imagine that it will be a huge hit this summer as people stock up with holiday read thrillers. Whilst the ending’s twist is likely to be appreciated, I couldn’t help wishing that the sucker punch was even more ferocious!
My thanks to NetGalley and Random House UK, Cornerstone for a copy of this book in exchange for a fair review.
This book confused me at first, I really had to concentrate to make sense of each character and their relationships! By the time I got half way through I started to really enjoy and read much faster! It did have a lot of twists and turns and a very unexpected ending! A good holiday read.
I feel a little guilty given all the high ratings given by others but I just didn't love this book. That said it did keep me gripped and I was keen to find out how things happened.
This was a very enjoyable read, it’s full of twists and turns throughout with plenty of suspense to keep you on the edge of your seat. The characters were great, the story itself is fantastic and the style of writing was perfect. I have read many of this authors books so will be keeping my eye out for more in the future. The would recommend this to anyone who enjoys reading psychological thrillers.
Thank you netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this in exchange for a honest review.
Wow what an incredible thrilling read. It’s been a long time since I’ve read a book in one sitting as I did with this. I couldn’t put it down. I was drawn in from the beginning enchanted by Nicole and Toms beautiful life Lancaut. Their stunning glass barn in the peninsula was so descriptive I felt I was there. When Tom”s body was found in the pool I found myself suspecting many on the characters, but there were so many twists and turns I kept second guessing myself. I was really drawn to Anna and really felt for her and Nicole. I was utterly shocked by Nicole’s secret at the end of the book. I could never have guessed the ending which was stunning. A really impressive suspenseful read that had me hooked until the end.
This was a fantastic twisty read, so many suspects, so many plot turns.
Nothing is as it seems in either the Barn or the Manor House told from the different angles of all the characters it makes for a really indeprh story.
Thanks to netgalley for the opportunity to review this book this is my honest opinion.
Absolutely brilliant. At the start I thought it was all going to be quite predictable - I was wrong. What a fantastic read.
I am a fan of Gilly Macmillan and this was an enjoyable book. It tells the story of a couple who have recently won the lottery and bought their dream house however when the male is found dead in their new pool, a murder investigation ensues. With only a few local people within miles of their house, the list of suspects is very small......
The story is told from multiple perspectives and different timelines too. Additionally, there is also journal entries as well and I have to say the style and format was a bit confusing at some points to try and keep track of where you were.
However, it was an entertaining read, just a little confusing at times.

This is my first by the author and I enjoyed it a lot. The triple timelines, multiple POVs make the story more complex and confusing. It reminds me of Lisa Jewell books so if you love Jewell, try Macmillan! You might like it! It’s suspensful and creepy, but I also get a sense that the author is being a little bit playful as well? That reminds me a bit of Ruth Ware books? Absoluetely loved that ending! It made me smile.
There are many characters and mysteries, but everything came together in the end nicely. A perfect read if you want a quick entertaining psychological thriller!
After a ten million pound lottery win, Nicole and Toms lives are changed forever. However, their dream quickly turns into a nightmare … and the mystery begins to unfold.
Intrigue right from the beginning and more twists than I knew was possible to fit into one book! This kept me guessing to the very end - a brilliant thriller by Gilly Macmillan.
Nicole and Tom have won the lottery. Ten million pounds no less. They've settled into their newly built glass box with all mod cons including 'smart' technology when Tom is found dead in the swimming pool. Was it an accident or something more deadly? One by one we meet possible suspects and follow the police investigation as secrets are revealed.
This is a delicious read. It's all about coercive control but instead of it being one half of a couple who controls the other instead it is about a couple with nothing who want it all. The way they go about it is astounding and unfortunately all too believable. There are murders aplenty to keep you guessing and dastardly villains abound. If you like psychological thrillers you'll love this. And even though no one is squeaky clean you will find a couple of characters to root for (though you really shouldn't in at least one case).
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.
Definitely one to ready, very good from the first chapter right until the very end, I would recommend to read this along with her other books in the future
I loved the fall all the way through ,all the twists and turns until it came to the end which i felt was rushed and not quite believeable .Pity .
I really enjoyed this book and couldn't put it down. The story is clever, with some very unexpected twists, and the characters are interesting and completely believable. I would definitely recommend this book.
What a fantastic book. The coercion and control was well written and signs are there for everyone to learn from.
Olly and Sasha really are abhorrent characters but everyone has their flaws but those two take the cake.
Anna was a great character, I liked her , Tom on first reading sounded like a bit of wet lettuce and insipid, overall though the strength of the female characters were well done.
Jen and Hal were a good match too; though Hal’s migraines are unfortunately relatable.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for the chance to read this arc
Wow, what a read. I found it slightly slow to begin with as there were so many characters points of views to be introduced. However, once I got into the book I was hooked. I really loved the character Anna and felt a lot of sympathy for her. You could easily imagine that situation happening especially to a widow in such an isolated place. I loved all the twists in the book and didn't see them all coming.
I'd highly recommend if you enjoy a psychological who done it book. The writing flowed really nicely, characters were great and the storyline was brilliant.
Thank you to Netgalley, and Random House UK, Cornerstone, for this advance copy.
"The Fall" by Gilly Macmillan is a gripping psychological thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seats. Nicole and Tom, have just won the lottery and moved into a luxurious Glass Barn conversion on the grounds of Lancaut Manor. However, their happiness is short-lived when Tom is found dead in the swimming pool, and the police begin to investigate.
As the story progresses, secrets are revealed, and suspicions are raised about everyone around them. The author keeps the reader guessing until the very end, with plenty of twists and turns along the way.
I throughly enjoyed this read, espeically the ending. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who appreciates a well-crafted psychological thriller.
