Tom and his wife have won the lottery. They are living in there exclusive house. On returning from a trip Nicole finds her husband lying dead in the pool. Desperately she runs to her neighbours next door for help. As the story progresses you realise there is more going on than just the death of Tom. The author has cleverly woven in another story. This is a real domestic thriller that will have you guessing to the end.
Many thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to see an ARC
Nicole and Tom's dream of winning the lottery becomes a nightmare when Nicole returns home one day to find Tom dead in their pool. Somehow, he wasn't safe in their high tec, super secure Glass Barn conversion. Was it an accident? What do their neighbours know? Nicole doesn't know who to trust or even if Tom was the man she imagined him to be.
Twists and turns aplenty in this as you would expect from Gilly Macmillan. It's quite slow paced, but this builds up a good amount of tension, revealing the characters' secrets gradually.
An enjoyable thriller, another great read from this author.
I’d been purposefully avoiding the Psychological Thriller genre recently, because I found that if you read too many, they all start to feel a bit same-y.
But The Fall was next on my TBR pile and so I picked it up, not really in the mood, but with a sense of duty!
Not the best way to begin a new book.
But, I was very quickly hooked and totally engrossed.
The lottery winners angle was great - some good insights were made into how people have to ‘learn’ how to be rich and how to adapt. And of course, it made for a great motive for murder.
There was a great mix of characters, some sympathetic and some odiously villainous!
What I really appreciated about ‘The Fall’ was that it didn’t introduce too many outlandish twists. I think that’s what has turned me off this genre recently - authors are introducing more and more insane and unlikely twists to stay ahead of the game, and sometimes less is more.
So despite starting the book in the wrong frame of mind - I ended up really enjoying this one.
A bit slow to start but some good twists.
Some parts were really atmospheric, but it isn't my favourite novel by this author.
Still enjoyed it
Another brilliant read by one of my favourite authors. I hate finishing her books because I know that be hot to wait for her to write another. 5/5. Read her other books too!
An excellent thriller with a clever twist midway through - while none of the characters are likable, the writer created a terrific plot line that had me absolutely entranced, until the extremely satisfying solution!
I just absolutely love Gilly Macmillan, I would read her shopping list. This book did not disappoint. It was full of drama and unexpected twists. The characters were well written and I LOVE short chapters. It makes a book both easier to read and pick back up but also makes you race on to find out more.
Just do yourself a favour and give this one a read. Loved it.
I keep retiring to Gilly MacMillan again and again for her thrillers.
Nicole and Tom are the average run of the mill couple whose lives are turned around by a £10 million pound win and moving into a state of art glass barn built to their specifications. It’s bound to raise any eyebrow or two of potentially envious neighbours.
Tragedy strikes when Tom ends up dead in the pool. Is it a tragic accident or murder. With the mystery unraveling, there will turn out to be one or two misers along the way and perfect revenge too.
With thanks to NetGalley, Random House and Cornerstone UK for this preview read of this mystery thriller.
Definitely a one sitting read! Creepy and compelling in equal measure. Well written although I found some of the characters didn't really gel with me otherwise would have been 5 star
A brilliant pacy and gripping twisty read about lottery winning childhood sweethearts Nicole and Tom who have built a state of the art luxury home, the Glass House, in the picturesque grounds of Lancaut Manor in Gloucestershire.
The story begins as Nicole returns one day to find husband Tom dead in the swimming pool and runs to the neighbouring Manor House for help, where we start to learn more about the strange goings on and the numerous ulterior motives.
With so much tech, there still isn't any security footage of what happened. And being so isolated there is nobody to independently corroborate alibis.
The story is cleverly plotted and unfolds across several perspectives as the police investigate multiple leads and red herrings, and we follow Tom in the hours leading to his death to find out what really happened.
Once I started this novel, it was incredibly hard to put down- the storyline is a great premise. The plotting is strong, it moves at pace, there are some unexpected twists & I found I could effortlessly imagine the location from the author's subtle descriptions.
At times credibility is stretched, the police come over as rather gullible & I had a few questions that no-one answered- but over all I loved the style & thoroughly enjoyed it.
A gripping thriller with lots of twists and turns - I couldn’t put it down and was kept guessing until the end!
My opinions of the characters changed throughout the book. There were so many twists and turns as I read. Just when i thought i knew who dunit there was new information. An excellent read gripping right to the end.
This is only my second time reading a Gilly Macmillan novel, the first was The Long Weekend earlier this year. She is an international bestselling writer of a number of books and I don't know how I had not come across her before now, as she writes in the genre that I love, crime thrillers. Her latest The Fall is about a young couple, Nicole and Tom, who win ten million pounds in a lottery, how it changes their life when they move to a state of the art stunning house in Gloucestershire and how their life is irreversibly changed by the discovery Tom's body in the swimming pool with a head injury.
This is a really well crafted story with many twists and turns, It is never straightforward and will have you guessing till the end. Almost all the characters have deep secrets and ulterior motives that will make you want to keep reading as the plot develops. While it is a fast paced book, it is also a little drawn out in places as the characters personalities and back stories are formed, which provide clues and red herrings in this exciting whodunnit. The chapters are short which creates a sense of tension that is both gripping and entertaining in this psychological crime thriller.
Up to the 40% mark this was a 4 star potential. Good plot twist to keep your attention. From there it all goes downhill.
Up to 70% ok maybe 3 stars.
Last 30% I was skimming. Plot twist where? The most OBVIOUS person committed the crime.
All wrapped up very neatly in a bow at the end.
Gripping and full of twists, I didn't know what to expect or who/what to believe, the mystery just kept coming.
This is a gripping, psychological thriller full of tension and surprise. The book opens with Nicole returning to their new modern built house to find Tom, her partner, dead in the swimming pool with a head wound. Tom and Nicole were childhood sweethearts and had their lives transformed when they won £10 million on the lottery. After their win they left their old life behind and moved into their dream, architect built home, the Glass Barn. Nearby is Alan aunt Manor where Olly and Sasha live along with their housekeeper Kitty. When Nicole discovers Tom’s body she goes running to them and they call the police. Hal and Jen, the police detectives, have to determine whether Tom’s death was an accident or murder. Everyone is a suspect and everyone has plenty of secrets they are keeping. The story is told in a a dual timeline and from multiple points of view with diary entries from Anna, a previous resident. The author has delivered a great thriller with so any twists and turns. An enjoyable and entertaining read.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for giving me the opportunities to read and review this book.
The Fall is a thriller that is full of twists and turns. The characters were realistically penned and the Glass House and manor house both make interesting settings. I did find the novel a little slow in places, and i would have appreciated more taking place in the present day scenes, but the backstories were interesting.
This murder mystery thriller had me flipping through the pages, in order to find out whodunnit! I quite enjoy Gilly Macmillan's books and this one was no exception. It was enjoyable, intriguing and a solid read. I look forward to reading what she comes out with next.
A really enjoyable psychological thriller with brilliant characters. The story is told from the different perspectives of the characters which lets us see the story from all angles.
Lots of suspense and red herrings throughout, you'll be kept guessing until the final great ending.
