This was a great thriller told from many viewpoints and many questionable characters. I did initially worry about how many people were telling the story but I actually found it easy to follow. It was so difficult to work out if it was an accident or murder and if so who did it. The location was great, primarily set around two magnificent houses in beautiful surroundings, one with an incredible but scary array of technology and the other with secret passageways all of which adds to the drama. All in all there’s a great complexity of characters and and awful lot of secrets which make for a fascinating but not too challenging read.

I really enjoyed this psychological thriller. Lots of twists and unexpected turns. Very hard to put down.
I must point out though that Chepstow is in a wales not England, as stated in the book.

The Fall by Gilly Macmillan: Nicole and Tom are winners in a lottery. Rather than go public they keep things to themselves. At first glance, it looks as if the pot of gold at the end of their rainbow is on solid ground until the unthinkable happens. They own a glass barn on Lancaut Peninsula—a mix of modern architecture and ruins—with a state-of-the-art security system. But when Nicole returns home one day, she finds her husband unresponsive in the swimming pool.

We meet Sasha and Olly, neighbours at Lancaut Manor, but there is something off about the relationship, a feeling that their presence is more deliberate than accidental. A case of not belonging, if I could give it a word. The ensuing police investigation throws up startling revelations. Kitty, the housekeeper, knows all the secret passages and priest holes in the house, which is useful since she has a penchant for eavesdropping. But someone is a lamb being led to the slaughter and it won’t be long before that lottery win becomes a bone of contention.

There is a large array of characters and points of view to keep track of, but it’s not distracting. In fact, it provides entertainment and brings different perspectives to the plot. I found I liked Hal Steen and Kitty best. The other characters were highly engaging, and the ending threw me for a loop. The prose is descriptive without being overwrought and the dialogue moves the story forward. The whole book kept me glued to the pages. Outstanding writing. I felt as if I was right in the middle of everything that happened.

Thank you to Netgalley, the author, Gilly Macmillan, and the publisher, Random House UK, Cornerstone, for the privilege of reading an advance copy of this book.

Thank you NetGalley for this advanced copy. I really loved Gilly's first few books. but her last few have fallen short for me. This was ok. It sounded really good. but i felt like it got too long for me in the middle. I ended up skimming some of it. Nicole and Tom win the lottery and move to a new house. What happened to Tom? Who are all these characters that seem to be hiding secrets? The book does have some suspense and twists I did not see coming, but overall, it just wasn't as good as I was hoping.

What an emotional ride trying to work out what was going to happen next. I at up into the early morning hours as I could not seep until I had finished this fantastic story. My reward was that the ending was amazing and so unexpected. Gilly MacMillan is a brilliant author who keeps the reader on tender hooks all the way through. This book made me think what would I do if I won the lottery an how easy it is to destroy a family life.

This book was brilliant and I could not put it down!

So many twists and cliff hangers that I was hooked. The writing style flows nicely and really added to the tension.

Every character was a possible suspect in Tom’s murder and I loved the way it came together. Looking forward to reading more from this author.

The Loathsome And Despicable…
A multi million pound glass barn set amidst the rolling hills and lush greenery of the Gloucestershire countryside is a dream come true for Nicole and Tom - after all, winning the lottery was a fluke in a million in itself and their future is bright. Isn’t it? They hadn’t banked on the neighbours. With a tremendously well crafted cast of characters - the loathsome and the despicable being done particularly succinctly- and a pacy, swiftly moving plot peppered with twists, turns and red herrings aplenty comes a cleverly plotted and masterfully edgy suspense. A one sit read with some huge dollops of satisfying karma being handed out in delicious droves.

This was such aobsessive read for me! I literally couldn't out it down once I starred and I loved every second if it. Its a really easy read, it's well written and the story just flows really naturally. It's one of those plots where you never quite know who to trust and all the characters seem a little bit sus so you're constantly suspecting everyone! I usually find books like that can be a bit boring and drag on but this one is just such worlds apart from a lot of others I've read and it's kept interesting and you are kept wondering. There is this really eerie unsettling vibe throughout and it just feels like nothing is as it seems. I loved the fact I had no clue what was going on until the author wanted me to know and there were some really good twists thrown in. This is really cleverly written and I'd recommend to anyone who enjoys a good wee psychological thriller

First class psychological thriller.

Pretty much every character here – excepting the police – feels like there’s something just a little “off” with them, and that gives this entire read an unsettling feeling. It makes is difficult to gain any solid grounding at to who has caused Tom’s death, let alone put it all together. Kudos to the author for keeping that creepy undertone prevalent from start to finish.

We start with Tom being found by his spouse dead in the swimming pool at their mansion – recently acquired with a big lottery win. Is his death an accident, or is there more to it? And where does Anna’s journal (written 5 years prior) fit – and who is Anna? Cleverly constructed, addictive and mysterious. Enjoy !
