A thriller with lots of twists and dark turns. Never read from this author before but would definitely do so again. Would recommend if you like a fast paced read
First of all I would give this 3.5 stars but not an option. The first half of the story was slow going and I really had to push myself to keep reading, but I’m glad I did. The storyline was good overall but it wasn’t until the second half the book really got going and picked up pace.
What a good read this was. Well-written characters and plotline combine to make this a great whodunnit.
Told from various characters viewpoints and at different stages in their lives, you get closer and closer to where they all collide and interconnect.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book with all its twists and turns.
A solid thriller with many twists. All the characters have dark side and secrets. Two time lines are used which the author does a great job of doing. Abit far fetched in places but over all an enjoyable read
This is a modern day fable - what happens to people when large sums of money become involved and what they will do to get it. There’s murder, some abuse and plenty of oneupmanship in this tale with a great twist. I’ll leave you to decide if everyone gets the outcome they deserve.
I’ve seen mixed reviews on this book, but I loved it. The story was well thought out fast paced and all the characters were fully developed rather than just names slotted in as fillers. Might make you think twice about winning the lottery though!
4.5 stars rounded up to 5
I raced through this twisty thriller. This is my first from this author but won't be my last. Seriously tense, brilliant twists and a load of characters with secrets - what more could you want?!
Well fleshed out characters and good plot.
It is an intriguing slow burn which I really enjoyed.
Read if you like character based thrillers.
The Fall, Gilly MacMillan
I really enjoyed The Fall.
Nicole and Tom have won the Lottery and with their winnings, bought The Barn, which they renovated with state-of-the-art technology. But Nicole returns home and finds Tom dead in the swimming pool. Who can have killed him? No-one else is around and the closest people to them are their friendly neighbours who live in the Manor, along with their housekeeper in the coach house.
As the police attend on site, more is uncovered and there is a clever twist, particularly at the end.
Thank you to NetGalley and Random House UK, Cornerstone for a copy of this book, I rate it 4 stars.
A unique premise with plenty of 'twists and turns' but perhaps too many.
One revelation adds a sinister element to a seemingly innocent character which I really enjoyed, particularly as the other main characters were obviously unlikeable.
Personally I disliked the police investigation element and found that there were two obvious procedural inaccuracies.
I have read several of Gilly MacMillan’s books in the past so was hoping for a really good read and I was not disappointed. What a plot! I was drawn in straight away and just couldn’t put it down. It was a compelling ,addictive read ,very cleverly thought out with many twists and turns which I didn’t foresee and what a chilling ending. I did get a little mixed up hallway over Kitty /Anna hence only four stars but it was such a good, modern, up to date story.. Thanks to Netgalley for giving me the opportunity to read this book.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for my E copy in return for this review.
I've rounded this up from 3.5 stars to 4. While there were a couple of amazing twists that were jaw droppings, there were also a couple I guessed pages before they happened.
This story was well written and an easy read. With some elements that keep me guessing till those final pages
I’ve been wanting to try a Gilly MacMillan thriller for a while after seeing them everywhere. She seems to be really popular here in the UK. This ended up being an okay mystery thriller for me.
As I said this is a mystery thriller following multiple characters. Tom and Nicole are lottery winners who have built their dream home near the River Wye when one morning Tom is found dead in their pool by Nicole and a murder investigation kicks off. Sasha and Olly, their neighbours are eager to help but they have their own secrets along with their housekeeper Kitty. Jen and Hal are hoping this case will be a career boost and as they investigate more and more hidden truths come to the surface.
This was extremely twisty with most of the twists being ones I didn’t predict at all. This is definitely more of a slow burn domestic thriller so keep that in mind before jumping in. I personally enjoyed the way the story slowly came together and I love books told from multiple perspectives, especially in a mystery thriller. I can’t really go into too much because I don’t want to spoil anything but I liked the way certain topics were discussed.
My problem is this was far too long and at times very repetitive. The prose was also very simple and I was kind of fed up of the way things were described so monotonously. While the author set up a really good atmosphere with the houses being in the middle of nowhere, I just found myself bored at times. It really picked up at the 70% mark but for a thriller that is over 400 pages long I needed more.
I still recommend this to people who like domestic thrillers focusing on dark secrets hidden behind a glowing facade. I may try out more of this authors work in the future because the plot was definitely carefully and well constructed and overall I enjoyed it. Thank you to Penguin Random House and NetGalley for my ARC! Release date: 25th May 2023
The Fall is a psychological thriller that weaves a story of lies and deceit.
We meet Nicole and Tom who have won the lottery and are living in their new dream home - The Glass Barn. When Tom is found dead, they assume its an accident but when foul play suggests murder, everyone is a suspect - including old friends, neighbours and even his wife.
Told from different characters points of view - flicking to before and after 'the fall' we come across some shady characters and I was racing through the pages to find out what actually happened on that day. Everyone seems to have their own game or motive and I enjoyed gradually uncovering what actually happened.
The books covers topics of manipulation, coercive control and power really well.
The book was pacey and interesting, I will be recommending to others and looking for more from this author.
Good thriller with many twists and turns. Interesting how the chapters were told by different characters perspectives which worked well and made me want to keep reading to find out why certain things had happened and how things would work out. Good subject matter and I think I'd give it a 4.5 as it could have been a bit better but didn't spoil the read and I'd still recommend.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this for an honest review.
The plot is as deep and dark as it gets, multi-layered with 'who knew what when?' as the strands come together and the finer details get filled in. This is an absolutely compelling, gripping book full of mystery and suspense. Only a few authors can write deeply involving psychological drama of the very highest quality.
The E-Book could be improved and more user-friendly, such as links to the chapters, no significant gaps between words and a cover for the book would be better. It is very document-like instead of a book. A star has been deducted because of this.
This is a first for me by the author and one I enjoyed and I would read more of their work. The book cover is eye-catching and appealing and would spark my interest if in a bookshop. Thank you to the author, publisher and Netgalley for this ARC.
Tom and Nicole win the lottery - 10 million pounds. Moving into their dream home, Nicole comes home to find Tom dead in their swimming pool.
Here starts a twisty and suspenseful mystery. There's a lot going on in this novel, it was sometimes hard to keep up. We go between past and present timelines, gradually unveiling an intricate plot.
While it was a bit of a slow burn, it was a clever (and often funny) story with lots of twists.
Recommended for a quick popcorn murder mystery/drama. I look forward to what this author brings out next.
Many thanks to NetGalley, Random House UK for a complimentary advanced reading copy.
Despite really enjoying this story which was very distinctive and kept me alert all the way through I was left feeling this could have had a better editing. The whole idea was great but was not as free flowing as it might have been. The characters and story were convincing and the lottery win was a great way to set the actions in motion.
The coercive behaviour of Olly and Sacha brought a lot of reality in the sense they took advantage of a recently fragile widow by moving in on her life.
From the start the body being found put me on high alert. It had huge tension throughout and left me questioning the characters behaviour all through the storyline. Tale of the unexpected with characters turning out to be not what you might expect.
A real page turner.
The writing felt a bit rushed and clumsy to begin with and I didn’t think I was going to enjoy this story. I think it was a case of too much information required for the set-up - the young lottery winners in a Grand Designs state-of-the art glass barn in a remote country location, the couple next door in the Manor House living with their housekeeper, along with the various tensions and anxieties of newly acquired wealth versus genteel poverty - it all seemed to be a bit much. However, I soon settled in to the story which gets going when Tom is discovered dead in the barn’s swimming pool and the mystery unravels. There were a bit too many “Manor House clichés” for my liking towards the end - hidden corridors, a priest-hole leading to a tunnel and a plague pit - but otherwise an okay, if not completely convincing psychological thriller.
With thanks to NetGalley, the author and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review an advance copy.
A gripping twisted read about a man who drowned and the background story why…..far fetched but easy reading and an enjoyable one!
Exhausting, I really couldn't get into this for ages and thought it was going to be a DNF, however managed to force myself but not sure it was worth the effort.
I found the whole thing to be tedious, slow and repetitive, too many characters and none of the characters were likeable, even Anna was just so sappy & weak.
Some plot points, (like the stalker or changing Olly's book) just seemed half done.
As for the ridiculous "ending", so everyone just went oh well never mind it's all a mystery, really?!
My thanks to Netgalley and the Publisher for my eARC in return for my honest review.
