I really liked the sound of this one but found it fell a little flat for me. So much of the book regarding her job / adoption implausible and I found myself really struggling to want to finish the book, which was a shame because it started good.

An accomplished novel with a different storyline from what I expected! One to get immersed in! Revelle, an interpreter tries and hopes to bring justice in her caseloads. Unfortunately things do not always turn out the way she expects they should, bringing about anxious and sometimes terrifying circumstances. I found the further I read the more I couldn’t put the book down!

"The Interpreter" by Brooke Robinson is a clever and intriguing look into the effects of our words on the outcomes and events of our lives. The unforeseen consequences and haunting thoughts of past mistakes, deliberate or accidental, reverberate through this story,

There are powerful and even shocking insights into how influential an interpreter is in court testimonies - how an inadvertent error or slip of the tongue, or a deliberate untruth or inaccuracy can change the lives of many. An interpreter turned judge and jury is a dangerous force indeed. And when the interpreter realises the extent of the influence, and how it impinges on their own life, the effects on mental health and wellbeing are clearly illustrated.

The human aspects of the story told about Revelle and Elliot and they learn to live together and to overcome the past, cope with the present and look to the future, are well observed and expressed.
A major achievement of complexity and an unusual insight into a subject I suspect few have truly considered.
Highly Recommended.

I don't like giving bad reviews but I have to say I found The Interpreter more irritating than intriguing, 95% of the book is Revell the main character ( an interpreter) hinting at something she has done in the past and occasionally a chapter with a mysterious other person who is obsessed with her soon to be adopted son and then when we get to the last few pages where the end was rushed and anticlimactic. I understand that this is Brooke Robinson's first novel and I hope she doesn't take the comment to heart as she's done more than most of us and actually written a book.

I really enjoyed this book, though it wasn't what I was expecting from the tagline of 'the most dangerous person in the courtroom isn't the killer.'

Though I didn't find it entirely gripping, I loved the concept and found it intriguing enough to want to know what was going on. I was a bit disappointed by the reveal at the end, with all the build-up I'd expected something really shocking to happen.

The Interpreter tells the story of Revelle Lee, a girl who spent her childhood travelling the world for her mother's work and, as a result, is able to speak 11 languages. She now works as an interpreter mainly in courtroom and police interview scenarios. We learn early on that something has happened in Revelle's past that she is clinging on to and it becomes something that comes back to haunt her throughout the book.

I found the idea behind this book to be completely fascinating. The thought that an interpreter could, with the change of one simple word, be responsible for changing someone's future blew my mind. I really enjoyed how the story unfolded and found myself completely invested and wondering what I would do in a similar scenario.

The storyline wasn't the best but for me, the overall premise carried it through and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

My thanks to NetGalley and the Publishers for sending me this ARC in return for an honest review.

Unfortunately not for me. The
basic premise of the story was good but the book didn't flow. It jumped between disconnected story lines. Even though I knew they would all be explained in the end, I was so bored. Rather than dnf I skim read between 50 and 80 %. I didn't warm to Revelle.
Although I have been very negative I'm sure many readers will love it.

An interesting concept and on the whole a good read although I was lukewarm at best to the main character and didn’t always understand why she did what she did,but a unique premise and a mainly interesting read

A good story although it was confusing at points trying to work out who was saying what and when! Seem shockers along the way but overall a good story.

This book had so much potential button the end just wasn't for me. The idea of an interpreter being able to have so much sway on a case really appealed to me, but I just didn't find the main character likeable or engaging. A shame because the idea was a great one. Its not a bad book and I am sure others will enjoy it but personally it was not for me.

I expected more from this book after reading the advance comments. I found it very slow and I struggled to read to the end. There was always the sense of menace and 'veiled threats' throughout the book but I found it all very disjointed. Not for me I am afraid.
Thank you to NetGalley and Random House UK for the opportunity of reading the advance copy.

A definitely page-turner. I was up far too late finishing this. Really enjoyed it and the end definitely surprised me, even though I thought I had worked it out!

This promised a lot but was very disappointing. There was a lot going on - Revelle, who narrates the story, is adopting a child while working as an interpreter. While she agonises over getting a word wrong, she seems to do so quite liberally, whether accidentally or - at times- on purpose. for reasons which are hard to fathom. The writer appears to want to create some jeopardy about whether the adoption will go ahead but despite a number of potential disasters, it all goes through surprisingly smoothly - although that in itself feels implausible. There are clearly "secrets" to be revealed including someone who writes (very confused) passages of the book every now and then. The problem is that you never get to care about Revelle, who isn't likeable, and the secrets, when finally revealled are implausible and/or uninteresting. There are several flashback chapters but these just add to the confusion.. The ending is all a bit of a mess. To be fair, I did see it through to the end but wondered why I bothered. This is billed as clever and compulsive but I am sorry, I didn't find it either.

Revelle works as a multi-lingual interpreter and is the foster carer for a young boy she is in the process of adopting. Having knowledge of both the family courts, the judicial system and interpreters this novel was of particular interest to me.

Its an interesting concept that an interpreter could deliberately breach the strict impartiality code to sway the outcome of a police investigation or a court case.

Its a unique idea and it started out well but slowed down in the middle as it became more and more far fetched. Without my interest in the legal process I'm not sure it would have kept my attention to the end.

I enjoyed the character of Revelle, at times difficult to like but easy to empathise with she is a challenging lead character.
The background to her openness to blackmail and her fear of her adoption process going wrong take time to be revealed and at times that is a little frustrating as her tension and emotional instability are increasing but you cannot go along with her due to the paucity of information given.
That said it is an interesting twist on court proceedings and vulnerabilities!

I’m surprised at the negative feedback given by other reviewers. I was intrigued by the concept and whilst I agree that it was a little far fetched in places, it was a thoroughly enjoyable read and I raced through it. I thought it was well structured and I would recommend it.

I was a bit disappointed with this book overall I found it hard to get into the storyline and gel with the characters.

For me personally it wasn't an edge of seat thriller ride and I was glad when I had finished it.

Thank you to Netgalley and Random House UK for this ARC.

An Okay Read 🤔

Following Revelles life with a career as an interpreter and wanting to adopt young Elliot, with the challenges had being a single working Mum, to add to this she’s being blackmailed. Will she be able to work out who and why someone is doing this? Will the adoption go through?…

Overall an okay read, not a gripping read, more a mystery/whodunnit which I’m not a fan of.

I found it quite hard to become engaged with this book, and admit I did struggle to continue reading at times. The story itself had promise, but I honestly took a dislike to the main character almost instantly.

This is purely my opinion and I know others will enjoy it more.

I really liked the sound of this book but I don't think that it lived up to the hype.
It could have been so much better.
I don't necessarily think we are supposed to like the main character but there was just nothing at all likeable about her.
It took me a while to finish this because it just appeared to be dragging - it could have been an awful lot shorter.
