The premise of this book was really intriguing (especially for me, as a linguist).

Revelle is an interpreter who speaks an impressive number of languages due to a childhood in which she moved around a lot with her mother. Much of her work is done in court cases, where she faces the moral dilemma of whether to translate accurately or skew her translation to ensure the "right" outcome.

Revelle is also in the process of trying to adopt a child. It seems some poor decisions at work may prevent this happening, and that's before the threatening messages start arriving.

Everything was set up for a great story, but it just didn't land for me. A few too many vague aspects in the details and an unsatisfactory ending made this a three star read.

Thanks to the author, Random House UK Vintage, and NetGalley for the eARC of this book.
