ughhh yes! this was so good. I couldn't put it down and I never wanted it to end. I really loved the storyline and the ending was *chef kiss*
I didn’t know what to expect when I started listening to this. I ended up DNFing it because I just couldn’t get past the narrator’s irritating voice.
Thank you netgalley and the publisher for this arc in exchange for my honest review.
Disappointed by the authors use of certain language is this book will not be giving a review in support of this book.
Absolutely, 100%, yes. Burying Eva Flores had me in its clutches for a whole weekend, I could not put it down. The intensity and the plot had me dying to figure out what in the world was going on. This felt like Pretty Little Liars with a bit of the supernatural sprinkled in! I absolutely loved it. The characters were interesting, but to be honest it was more the suspense in the plot that kept me hooked. Highly recommend, I will be keeping my eye on what Alsever comes out with next.
Thank you to the publisher and to NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Not my cup of tea, although i do love the present day interview versus the past crime set up. Honestly that paired with a YA high school mystery is usually enough for me but man oh man I just couldn't get on board with the end. This one will absolutely be for some people (spoiler that I won't include on goodreads: think Simone St James) but I just prefer a more practical ending. The journal felt impractical to me but even without that I found I had issues with the story itself. I felt like this was written by someone who had never been a teenager themselves, or had and had forgotten to consider the differences between being a teenager and the effects of writing teenagers in a way that could be construed as problematic. For example, this book dealt with grooming/inappropriate child relationships without ever addressing it was wrong (at least I didn't notice any part that outright identified this) and instead blamed the child for their role instead of the adult. Anyways, not my cup of tea and if I had a preteen I would not recommend they read it.
I tried to like this book, but the characters were too convincing that I loathed all of them. Jennifer Alsever certainly knows what she was doing. Though I didn't like this, I'd still recommend it to anyone looking for a modern YA thriller!
The story was good, it could have been great. I was not expecting the twist with the journal and wasn't a big fan of that element. The main character was also suuuuuper unlikable. I almost DNFed this book a few times but decided to finish because I was curious about the ending.
3.25 stars
A magic journal that makes the future come true just by writing in it…sign me up! The premise of this book was fantastical. I loved the magical realism. Sophie and Eva are seniors in high school. Eva is an internet sensation with hundreds of thousands of followers. Sophie carries the weight of the world on her shoulders with her single mom out of work, their family on the verge of eviction from their home and protecting her disabled brother. Sophie can’t stand Eva and her need for constant attention. Eva doesn’t like Sophie either and thinks she’s a bully. The two teens start an ongoing battle of sorts that further solidifies their hatred towards one another. However, when Sophie discovers that she has a magical journal in which her stories come true, she starts to use it to make Eva’s life difficult.
We know at the start of the book that Eva has disappeared, possibly murdered. The audiobook was terrific and fit the set up of the book well. Amidst the third person narrative from Sophie’s perspective, there were also sections of mockumentary interviews with students, teachers, family members and law enforcement along with text message clips taken from cell phones.
This easily could’ve been a five star read for me. The only reason it wasn’t was because the execution of the final third of the story lacked a strong climax.and the ending didn’t deliver the much needed punch. The magical realism just sort of fizzled. It seemed like there could’ve been a better way to execute the ending. Up until that two thirds point I was very much intrigued and engaged but then the plot kind of lost me. The resolution just couldn’t keep up and some of the decisions that Sophie made just didn’t make sense or seem that realistic. It felt as though the author decided it was time to wrap things up and essentially did just that with very little thought and planning. There were loose ends that didn’t make sense.
Thanks Netgalley for an advanced audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
This was such an interesting complex book had very well fleshed out characters, who had flaws of their own, like selfishness or greed or codependency And I think that is what makes a Book very good. It’s because it is very relatable to real life as well as also has mysterious fantastical elements like a Book that creates stories in real life. I also very much joyed the ending which was a suspense ending, which ended as a very good Break and how they went from enemies to friends and how perspective is very important how you look at someone. The way they portray themselves and what they actually are going through are two different things. I think this audiobook is very well composed. The narrators are absolutely amazing and the story in general is absolutely perfect. I would highly recommend. This is kind of done as a police files book and is very interesting. I’ll put it as a suspenseful thriller light
This audiobook was great! I loved the full cast of narrators to read the various characters. It was a great mystery, I enjoyed trying to figure out who to trust. Definitely recommended! Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC copy.
The overall storyline to this book was okay. Unfortunately, it was too teeny-bopper for me so I don’t think I quite was able to get the full effect. The audio, however, was not as great as reading the book itself.
Liked the mystery. Was surprised by the "fantasy" aspect, not what I expected but it worked. Sophia and Eva were good main characters. The whole Sophia and Manny story arc was a bit blah. It helped with the conclusion but just was not into it. Narrators were great. Overall good read.
Thank you NetGalley.
I sadly just couldn’t get into it. Life to short to commit to an okay book when you could find one that provides a fantastic escape! I tried to as keep going and ultimately I know other will enjoy it more for books appeal to everyone in a different way! Thank you for providing this ARC for me to try reading.
Great narration, but poor execution IMHO. This just isn't believable or conceivable. Framing a friend, getting seduced by an adult (soooo creepy), no one being held accountable, the mom being understanding and not asking questions, the notebook curse with a fantasy vibe, the girls being friends and then not being friends. (Ok. Maybe that is legit. Girls are often horrible to one another.)
Without giving away any major spoilers, I'll I can say is that I just kept rolling my eyes...
My three-star rating is for the author's effort, the fantastic cover art and the mixed media audio narration, read by a cast.
Many thanks to the team at BooksGoSocial for sharing both the copy of the audio book as well as the ebook. I actually combined the two of them to stay on track.
“Everyone thinks I killed Eva Flores.”
I picked this up under the premise is was similar to HoJack's AGGGTM but was pretty disappointed..I wouldn't say they're similar at all. It's an interesting YA book with a Mean Girls vibe.
Things I liked: Format of the interviews and varying perspectives. Very little in all honestly.
Things I didn't: The dark turn this took into a 40 something year old man preying on multiple teenagers. The hyper focus on TikTok in the era of social media. The supernatural element felt like a stretch for me (grandma's magic journal?). Add in the ridiculousness of winning the lottery and I was out on this one.
A lot of what happened was unrealistic, cringy and gave me major *eye roll* energy. Thank you to NetGalley, the author & the publisher for a gifted copy in exchange for my honest review!
Thank you NetGalley and BooksGoSocial Audio for accepting my request to audibly read and review Burying Eva Flores.

Too young for my taste. Classified as Mystery & Thrillers, New Adult, and Sci Fi & Fantasy, I think middle grade writing, not content or young adult. New Adult is a new classification for me. Does it mean current topic matter?
I liked the gifted journal and subsequent storyline. I would have liked more thought put into its role.
The multiple narrators were distracting. I had to play the book out loud as opposed to using my ear buds. The narration setup was too much for my brain patterns. I do wish authors and/or publishers would put a warning on audiobooks with regard to profanity.
The book itself was just okay. I would have returned it unfinished to the library. Too juvenile for me. The TikTok storyline felt reasonable. The behaviors of parents, students, friends and foes seemed to be written in a responsible manner by the author. I don't feel like that portion was sensationalized.
I did enjoy the friend relationship of the three. Memories of my long ago high school days were bittersweet. Kudos to the author for showing a healthy friendship.
Overall, the story was just too young for me. I would gift as an E-book or physical book.
I can see how some people may like this but it wasn’t for me, personally.
The concept has so much promise. Unfortunately, I don’t think it was executed appropriately.
Lastly, I felt uncomfortable with the MC’s relationship.
The concept was fun and the narration was top notch but I couldn't quite keep up with what was happening as there was a lot of characters and a lot of dialogues happening but not much storytelling.
I just finished listening to Burying Eva Flores by Jennifer Alsever. If you are wanting to read a story that has an unexpected ending, this is the book for you. There were several plot twists that I never even considered as I listened to the book. This is definitely a book that I will be recommending to all my students who would like some suspense and thrills.
Burying Eva Flores is a YA contemporary mix of Mean Girls and Death Note with a bit of a paranormal take with the journal.. But unlike Death Note, people don’t die, but Sophia changes their lives in what she writes.
I was curious about this one and it has a full cast narration, so I went for it. It was a bit too much on the ‘girl drama’ end for me, and I did not like the direction that Alsever went with Sophia and Eva’s step-father. It was extremely creepy and just inappropriate. That could have been done a different way and possibly with a different character.
I was not sure how this one was going to end, and when the end came, I actually enjoyed it. The arc of certain characters changed for me.
But what would you do if you came across a journal that could change things? What would you do?
Many thanks to the publisher for granting me an audio copy via NetGalley to listen to. Overall, I did enjoy it despite some issues I had.
