This is my first time listening to an audiobook ahead of publication and I’m glad I did! I didn’t realize that the print and E-book versions have been available for about a year but that’s ok. I think for this style of book, audio is definitely the way to go. I can’t remember who said it but this book and the way it’s performed is similar to Sadie. Having multiple narrators absolutely added to the overall experience.
In terms of the story itself: I was intrigued after a few chapters and by about halfway into it I was hooked. I had to find out what happened to Eva Flores. Let me tell you this - the ending (while makes sense now) is not what I expected. I also really like the underlying message about how someone portrays themselves either in person or via social media usually isn’t the whole story. The cast of characters was diverse but believable. I really enjoyed the audiobook version of Burying Eva Flores and would recommend it to anyone interested in this novel.
I have quite confusing feelings with respect to this book. First of all I’m not sure what I read: was it a fantasy or a thriller? If I appreciate fantasy together with romance, the union with thriller didn’t excite me much. I wanted to follow the investigation to understand what happened but when a magical element becomes involved everything may happen so what is even the point? The other thing that let me perplexed are the characters: even now I can’t think of a single character that grew on me or that I even thought was nice. Even with these flaws, the author made me really understand the struggles the characters were facing. All of them had quite horrible lives, either without love or facing great difficulties and the fact that even if I didn’t like them I could still understand them makes me think that this book left a mark.
The audiobook, especially at the beginning, is a bit confusing because there are interrogations and paper journals and you don’t really know who is who but then everything becomes clearer and clearer.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
This story was presented and formatted in a very intriguing way which really helped to add to the mystery of the story. The characters were very childish and annoying at times, but that works for the overall story. The concept of people living fake lives on social media is a very prevalent topic and it was interesting to see it investigated in this book.
I enjoyed the narration of this book, it helped remind me that it was a Young Adult book and not a mystery thriller. Overall the story was good, just the right amount of mystery, young adult drama, and some far fetched sci-fi elements. I think that this is geared toward a much younger audience but it didn't stop me from enjoying it.
Overall, I enjoyed the story and it kept me interested.
Thank you for the opportunity to read this.

CW/TW: bullying, negative body image
The story is told and narrated in multiple POVs jumping back and forth from the present to the past leading up to Eva Flores’ disappearance. A popular Tik Tokker - the girl everyone wanted to be or be friends with - has gone missing, and the lead suspect is Sophia, once a friend but now her bitter enemy.
Told through interviews and recollections, it feels like the mystery is happening in real time. I love this kind of set up! The characters all fit into their stereotypes well in this town of the haves vs the have nots, and social media being worshipped and weaponized by high schoolers. I also liked the element of a little magical realism in the form of a writing journal that seems to make stories come to life. It’s better if you read or listen to it to
understand.
The narrators were superb, though honestly, I didn’t see the point of a couple of the periphery characters like the mayor, for example, who I felt didn’t really add to the plot. Their presence just made it feel crowded. I think streamlining the number of characters would’ve eased confusion, too.
As for the ending, I’m torn between liking it - it’s surprising- and being baffled - it left me with questions. This is my first time reading this author, and I liked my experience. Anyone who’s a fan of Pretty Little Liars or Elite, will enjoy this twisted little story I had the pleasure to listen to!
Thanks to @netgalley & #booksgosocialaudio for my ALC. This is my honest review.
While I received a copy of this audiobook in exchange for my review, all opinions remain my own. Thank you netgalley for the opportunity to listen to and review this book.
This was a book that just kept you guessing. The viewpoints jump around to different people. You get some chapters from the past, some from the present, some from the police files. It follows the disappearance of a young tik-tok famous girl, gone missing during a class trip. Oh, but this book is so much more wild than that. When Sophia is given a blank journal by a friend, inspiration to complete a school project, she begins to write a story inside. When that story beings to play out in real life, she sees the power she now holds and begins to write a new story... but just what is she really writing.
I loved how the author chose to wrap this up. It isn't a "happily ever after" but it also closes and leaves you feeling like there is an ending to the story. This one is worth picking up and listening to. The audiobook has a whole cast of characters in it and is simply fun to listen to. Plus, just take a look at that fun cover!
First off I want to thank @netgalley, @booksgosocial & @jenniferalsever for my free ALC in exchange for an honest review.
This was a great listen, I really enjoyed all the narrators and how they made the story feel so real. The strong point of this book for me was the alternating chapters, from different POV's, to interviews, to the book, to articles it was really engaging.
I was truly hooked to the story and wanted to know how it unfolded. The writing was great. I didn't expect it to be with a supernatural aspect but it was really well done and everything made sense. This book kept me guessing until the end.
The characters experienced lots of growth which I really liked. The characters were so well developed and portrayed teenagers accurately. It reflects on real life issues of teenagers and how social media can truly affect someone, but also how other people around them react to the social media fame. How one person acts is probably a reflection of some underlying issues at home and how to not judge a person based on what you see online.
If you're looking for a fun, fast paced, engaging YA read definitely give this one a try.
I thought this book was pretty interesting! It reminded me a lot of A Good Girl's Guide to Murder with the format. It's reminiscent of a few other YA mystery books, but still manages to be it's own thing! If you're into mystery/thriller books, give this one a shot!
This was a good book for the YA category but it seemed to wrap up SO FAST. It was going going going and then all of a sudden it was done. I think there was something left to be desired for the storyline involving the notebook. It had more potential to wrap up the story in a better way than it did. Overall a good book though.
This was not quite what I expected, the story was pretty wild and there's a bit of paranormal thrown in to shake it all up. I liked the back and forth timeline that showed us the lead up to Eva going missing and interviews with people now, after the fact. There are a lot of characters in this, so the full cast audiobook really helped me keep them straight.
Most of the characters in this are selfish and make some poor decisions, which made it difficult to root for any of them, but also fun and exciting to see how things would go down. Dylan is the only true innocent one and I enjoyed his love for Sophia. Other than that, you can see how someone might want Eva gone and how there are plenty of secrets hiding in this small town.
The ending didn't quite give me all the answers I wanted, but wrapped things up pretty well and had a nice conclusion.
I voluntarily read and reviewed this book. All opinions are my own. Thank you to BooksGoSocial and NetGalley for the copy
Burying Eva Flores - audiobook arc
4⭐️
This book was such a fun time. I really liked that we were switching between the present and the past. In the beginning I hated Eva but she really becomes more likable during the book. The opposite is true for our main character Sophia. At the end there was not a villain and a hero just fully developed characters. The last quarter of the book I was on high alert. All of a sudden everything was happening all at once. I really like Sophia her brother and Ethan. Honestly this book could become the next Good girls guide to murder. Really really enjoined this arc. Thank you NetGalley for giving me this arc! This book comes out 14 march!!
Thank you Jennifer for allowing me to review this ARC of Burying Eva Flores.
I have very mixed feeling around this book, so I am giving it a 3.5/5 stars.
General description: Sofia and Eva are constantly at odds. Sofia is an off the beaten path type of girl, while Eva is Tik Tok famous. They seemingly come from two separate worlds, intent on destroying each other. When Sofia receives a gift that allows her to control Eva's life, she doesn't say no. But does Sofia go too far? Who will make it out unscathed and OF COURSE: who buried Eva Flores?
The good:
- Once you understand what's going on (mainly near the end) the book is really hard to put down!
- The side characters are interesting
- The vibes of the story are perfect for a spooky read if you're looking for one.
- The VILLIANS?! I love a good villain and there are many of those.
The unsure:
- The first half of the book I was very confused in term of timeline, who the major players truly were.
- We'd get these half nuggets of information about characters that were not fully fleshed out, even up until the end. I had questions about Ethan's dad for most of the book, Eva's dad, and Eva's mother.
- Sofia in general is meant to be an unlikeable character I think, but I feel like it was too much for me.
- Sofia explores a relationship that personally I felt very uncomfortable reading, mainly because of how Sofia was processing the relationship. I think if I was more aligned with her thought process, I would have been less uncomfortable.
In short: If you're looking for a good spooky read and can push through the confusion of the beginning, this is a great book for you! There are of course pop culture references, so be aware.
Jennifer Alsever’s Burying Eva Flores builds suspense by employing multiple narrators throughout the novel. As the different plate s recount their version of events surrounding the disappearance of Eva Flores, the antagonist.
The characters in the book are relatable. Alsever effectively creates characters that a reader can sympathize with and I found myself with similar feelings of disdain towards Eva as Sophia at most points while reading. At times, the details for a subplot line or particular event were lacking. I was left scratching my head wondering if I had missed something. This is particularly true of the subplots including Eva’s stepfather or mother. Nonetheless, this is something that can be overlooked as the details are sufficient enough to continue to move forward with the storyline.
The audiobook version of the book includes multiple readers for different characters and some sound effects that add to the listening experience. The former is easy to follow and keep details straight throughout the novel. Pacing was a little slow, but this was solved by increasing playback speed while listening.
All opinions expressed in this review are my own. Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley.”

Sophie promises she did not kill her former friend, current mean girl, and TikTok star Eva Flores. I mean, she was horrible and totally deserved it but Sophie DID NOT DO IT. Told through a series of interviews, flash backs, and different POVs, this is a not to miss YA mystery that will leave you guessing until the very end.
If you have the chance, I highly recommend the audio version. We have a full cast of characters that will have you in suspense right from the start.
Read this if you like:
- social media as a focused plot
- interview style storytelling
- plot points woven through flash backs
- so many twists and turns...seriously...you won't guess where this is going
- realistic, modern portrayal of teenage characters
- suspense/mystery but not scary
Burying Eva Flores is available in print and audio. If it's not already on your tbr, it should be!

Special thanks to BooksGoSocial Audio and Netgalley for sharing a free copy with me in exchange for my honest opinions.
This was a fun read, and I could see students being interested in this text. I appreciated the focus on indigenous folklore and experiences and would have liked to see more within the text. I also appreciated the various perspectives and points of view within the text. I look forward to reading more from this author!
I'm newer to the audio book world (this was only my second one).
I liked the story line (definitely YA) but it was super easy to follow. The characters were great and depicted various high school personalities. I enjoyed the different narrators; this made it easy to follow along with who was speaking, texting, etc.
The story focuses on two main characters (Eva, the new girl who is a big TikTok star and Sophia, who isn't the most popular girl but she has a few best friends and is into art and cars). Eva and Sophia start as "friends" but that quickly changes when Sophia doesn't go along with everything Eva says or does; Sophia prefers friends she can be herself around instead of wanting friends who are all clones of each other. The story took a bit of an odd turn for me with the "magic journal" - I definitely was not expecting that to happen but it made the story interesting and different.
This was definitely not the usual "thriller" I read/listen to. Yes, it had the thrill aspect of trying to figure out what happened to Eva Flores but it wasn't a super twisty, crazy story (which was kind of nice for a change!)
I would recommend this book since it was easy to follow, the characters were likeable and the narrators were awesome.
Thanks for NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to listen to this audio book in exchange for my honest review. You guys rocks!
I wish I liked this more. This was a quick read for me. I enjoyed the infused investigation and interviews throughout the story. Our main character was very flawed and the more I read, the more unlikeable she became. I didn’t really care for the fact that it was written entirely in 3rd person, but I did like the magical element. The beginning hooked me, but it lost me through the middle. The last few chapters redeemed the story though and made it enjoyable overall.
First thing of all, the book description really excited, to a level that I had to have this one. So pretty that I had to listen to this one. What are really hard very I hopes from this one, unfortunately that did not happen with the book.
There were a few things that are really liked about this book including real life from the past and the police interviews in the present time. Sofia's point of view from past explain how things went according to her where as the police interviews from the present time given oral experience and a part of your other people included. Also I like the writing style which is very pretty and easy to understand. I received and audio book for this read and I must say the narrator was pretty impressive. I like how the first few chapters were dedicated to explaining the plot and setting the premise, to prepare the reader for what was going to come next, and also for the reader to know what kind of characters he was looking into.
What I did not like about this book?? Well this book was supposed to be a YA mystery, but grandma's magical journal, i don't get it. I mean I'm not a very big fan of magical things because I just don't get it. Also the main character Sofia, seemed very mean at times and I was wondering if we go to connect to her. The plot felt very unrealistic and cringe, with unreasonable acts.
Thankyou @netgalley for the ARC.
There's a lot that I enjoyed about this book, and up until the end, I would have rated it as a four. I liked that the audiobook had multiple narrators, the structure of the story flipping between the past and interviews, the examination of Eva's TikTok fame and the pressure that goes along with it, and the ultimate journey that Eva and Sophia went on. I definitely wasn't expecting it to be a paranormal book, but I enjoyed everything about the journal.
Where this book lost me was at the end. <spoiler> I was so angry with the way it ended for Eva's stepfather. After everything, he was only caught after he moved to another city and assaulted another minor girl. Victims are absolutely not responsible for ensuring that their attackers face justice, and I understand completely why Eva wanted to run away. But having another minor girl get assaulted was unnecessary and gratuitous. He could've easily been arrested for something else without having to destroy another young girl's life. I also didn't like the adult/minor "relationship."</spolier>
Fabulous narrator choices, I thought the multiple narrators were great. I really enjoyed this audiobook. So many twists and turns I never could have predicted the ending! Highly recommend! Thank you NetGalley for letting me listen to an advanced copy!
