In this gorgeous 224-page photography book, travel writer Claudia Martin offers 200 fascinating photographs of national parks and protected wilderness areas from around the world. Each location typically gets a photograph or two along with an informative caption. Locations are featured from each continent, and I loved the diversity of environments shown. What an amazing planet we inhabit!

Martin shares interesting facts about the sites’ geography, geology, plants, wildlife, and folklore. There are no maps and the text isn’t detailed enough to function as a travel guide, but this is a wonderful way for armchair travelers to learn more about parks and wilderness areas. If a photograph catches your interest, you can always research that location further. Some of these photographs certainly piqued my curiosity and made me long to see these places in person.

At 11.6 by 8.7 inches, this attractive hardcover book would make a wonderful gift or be an interesting addition to your coffee table. Most of the text appears in photo captions, so be aware that the font is small.

Thanks to Amber Books for providing me with an ARC through NetGalley. I volunteered to provide an honest review.

The Wild will wow you!! It's an absolutely stunning collection of photographs and information, all about the world's most spectacular untamed places, and it makes you realise what a wonderful world we live in when you see some of the sights on offer here!

It takes you all over the globe through rugged landscapes, forest areas, lakes and mountains to show off sights off the beaten track that have just been left to do their own thing! Alongside the scenery, there's also a wonderful array of wildlife and flora on offer and it's just astonishing to see the natural world at its' absolute best!

I love the history and information about each area we see, and the photography on show is just breathtaking!! A stunning collection!

“Five countries hold 70 per cent of the world’s last remaining wilderness: Russia, Australia, Brazil, Canada and the United States, much of the last country’s wild land lying in Alaska.”

This book’s whirlwind trip around the world was fodder for my travel wish list. Divided into sections by geography - Europe, Asia, Africa, Oceania & Antarctica, North & South America - the photography highlights various landscapes across the seasons. The isolation and serenity made this the perfect coffee table book for me.

Although I almost always love photography books, because there are so many to choose from, I like to get a feel for what to expect before deciding if they’re for me or not. With that in mind, I chose a current favourite photo from each section.

Legend says that dragons throwing rocks at one another created the distinctive landscape of the Drakolimni of Tymfi, found in Vikos-Aoös National Park, Greece.

The combusting sulphur in the Ijen stratovolcano complex in East Java, Indonesia, causes Api Biru, Blue Fire.

“African teak is a deciduous hardwood tree with explosive pods able to spread seeds over several metres.”

The teak forest can be found in Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe.

The world’s largest population of dugongs make their home at Shark Bay, Western Australia.

A gorgeous winter scene comes to you from the Kenai Peninsula in Alaska.

While this book features some breathtaking landscapes, it also includes photos of animals. My favourite was an American alligator, a species that can reach 4.8m (15.7 feet) in length, chilling out at Okefenokee Swamp in Georgia, USA.

Thank you so much to NetGalley and Amber Books for the opportunity to read this book.

The Wild is a glorious and impressive book including 200+ dazzling colour photographs of the most jaw-dropping wild places by continent with brief descriptions. True wilderness is not always easy to come by since people have depleted it. Thankfully, however, there are pockets of it where one can feel peace, tranquility and repose. Time seems to stand still in such paradises yet is constantly changing at the same time. What a beautiful, beautiful world! I am filled with gratitude and awe for experiencing several of these places in person and hope to see many others.

Along with information on the effects of weather, animals and humans on wilderness, author Claudia Martin takes the reader on a photographic journey of mountains, bodies of water and waterfalls, landscapes, national parks, natural phenomena such as northern lights and flora and fauna. She extols the virtues of Scotland highlands (with coos!), Northern Velebit National Park in Croatia, Lut Desert in Iran, Simien Mountains in Ethiopia, Djoudj National Bird Sanctuary in Senegal, The Pinnacles in Western Australia and Arctic poppies in Nunavut and loads more. I am ashamed to say I was unaware of the stratovolcano complex in Indonesia and Jellyfish Lake in Palau, especially as a jellyfish observer. Talk about fascinating stuff!

Immerse yourself in breathtaking scenery and learn more at the same time. If you are intrigued by wilderness and nature (who doesn't need an escape from urbanization?), this stunning book has your name on it.

My sincere thank you to Amber Books Ltd. and NetGalley for providing me with an early digital copy of this inspiring book. My bucket list has just become even longer!

The Wild by Claudia Martin is a beautiful coffee-table book that anyone would enjoy looking through and reading. The photography is beautiful and this book is just full of breathtaking images of nature. I really liked that many of the images had smaller captions that describe how the photos relate to the continent and just smaller fun facts. For example, the photographs of Camargue, Bouches-du-Rhone, France show both birds and horses and the caption describes some different types of birds that the Camargue wetlands are home to and how the horses have wide hooves that prevent them from sinking into the muddy marsh. Overall this is a beautiful book food of beautiful images.

Having loved the previous geographical coffee table books by Claudia Martin, I couldn’t possibly walk away from The Wild.
The Wild promises to take you to the world’s most spectacular untamed places, and it really makes true on its promise. Did you know there’s a volcano in Indonesia that is known for its “blue fire”, which is caused by combusting sulphur, which surges through the cracks, reaching temperatures of 600°C (1,112 °F)? Connecting with the air outside, the sulphur ignites, creating flames up to 5 m (16ft) tall!
The Northern lights in Norway, wild flamingo at sunset in France, a magnificent frozen lake in Russia, the Lut Desert and its prickly flora in Iran, a seven-tiered waterfall in Malaysia, hypersaline ponds and hot springs in Ethiopia, gorgeous lilac-breasted rollers and hippos in Tanzania, a bird sanctuary in Senegal, snowfall on Saharan dunes in Algeria, a mud pool in New Zealand, Adelaide Island in Antarctica and Jellyfish Lake in Palau, arctic poppies (yellow poppies, who knew?!) in Canada and longspur lupine in Nevada, USA, these are but a few of the stunning photos.
These are all places I will most likely never get to see in real life but with its gorgeous photos and interesting facts, The Wild did take me all over the world in spirit. I would highly recommend The Wild to any and all (armchair) travellers.

Lovely read and lots of pictures of the national parks around the world. This has inspired me to learn more and want to some day visit some of these places. Beautiful photos as well.

Its always hard to review books where the main focus is pictures of beautiful places. If you are curious about places that are typically untouched by mankin then this book is perfect for you. The pictures are stunning and clearly the main selling point of this book. I feel like the writing did what it was suppose to but didn’t bring anything special or unique to the table. I did learn a bit and enjoyed it quite a bit.

I cannot say enough good things about The Wild by Claudia Martin. The stunning and captivating images are exactly what I have come to expect from this talented photographer. She has the ability to preserve a moment in time and capture the essence of an environment in such a unique and phenomenal way. I will never get to travel and explore the way she does, so I have come to trust her images as a guaranteed experience as close to the real deal as possible. In this book, you will be blown away by the images from all over the world. It was supremely satisfying to see so many places still untouched and undeveloped. We truly live in a beautiful creation. I received a complimentary copy from the publisher via NetGalley and all opinions expressed are solely my own, freely given.

This is a gorgeous coffee-table book with absolutely breathtaking photographs of wild places and some of the animals who live in them all over the world. The colors are vibrant and the locations remote and otherworldly.

I did get a little confused as I flipped through it. The places included weren't always arranged in an order that made sense to me, and I felt like there was a lot of jumping back and forth between different biomes and countries with no warning.

The text accompanying the photos is sparse but informative and about the right amount for a book mainly focused on photographs, though sometimes I did want to know more.

*Thanks to NetGalley and Amber Books for providing an early copy for review.
