The translator talks in the very beginning of the style of prose. I usually enjoy a long winded description, but this book has one too many. I might have been okay with that if the content was a bit happier, even a little bit.
I wasn't able to finish the book and can't provide a more detailed review. There's a particular audience for books like this, but it wasn't me.
Bruno Schulz is one of my favorite authors and I was so delighted to read a previously unpublished story in this collection. The new translation was also great and I will be reading this again to compare side by side with the two other translations I currently own. I hope more people discover Bruno Schulz and fall in love with his writing with this collection.
I will be modifying this review while I read the stories, but so far, the universe Bruno Schultz built looks cozy and familiar until you suddenly find yourselve with a twisted turn that shakes you... or an abrupt end.
The first story was kind of a shock once the final paragraphs are reached. All told so sweet that you have to read twice to make sure that was it. Second story is kind of a draft of the next one, also set in a familiar scenario, but with a surreal point.
But one thing in common for all these stories is Schulz's prose and the way he lays the fine details and the atmosphere to make you feel as if you were there.
All in all, a great discovery!
Good imagery and an interesting set of stories. It was OK for me. Maybe I'm not the right audience for it.
Thanks very much for the free copy for review!!
Beautifully written short stories with vivid descriptions blending dark realism with fantastic transformations, so magical realism I guess. The stories are centred around one family, a son is the narrator. Many are concerned with his fathers mental deterioration. I found it better to read each story separately as one after the other it became quite overwhelming.
What a peculiar book.
This is very much a "it's not you it's me" situation as I couldn't get into most of the story. There were sections I quite enjoyed, which is why I bumped up the rating to 3 stars, but mostly it just wasn't for me. At least not at this time in my life.
Thoroughly enjoyable, each story was unique and thought-provoking. Beautiful imagery and descriptive detail help bring these stories to vivid life. A great read
