First of all: I LOVE this narrator! They’re amazing and they did such a good job with all three books in this trilogy, I was so impressed by the Welsh accent and it was easy to tell when characters changed!
I’ll be honest though, it took me a while to get through this one. I’d been highly anticipating it because I adore this trilogy and the last book left us on quite the cliffhanger! I eagerly dove in and then reached a point when my attention just wandered and I didn’t pick it up for a few months, then binge read most of it while being completely hooked only to take another few months to read the rest of it.
Partially, this was down to my personal situation and mental health but I do feel like I was quite disappointed towards the end. Don't get me wrong, everything wrapped up well and the romances had me squealing, but I feel like a character death was just…glossed over? as well as some other things.
The final book in The Last Hours trilogy. A great conclusion to the series. The audio was well done as well.
I have loved the Shadowhunters realm for so long and Cassandra Clare is an amazing storyteller and creator of worlds but WOW was this long! I’m not sure it needed to be so padded out and whilst the narrator was spot on it did mean I felt the books longevity even more so as it was over a day long.
The final encounter for the Merry Thieves, Cordelia and Cortana and Co and so everything was wrapped up and put to rest, unfortunately without all characters making it to the end alive. I’m not sure there was ever any doubt though on Cordelia and James finding their way to resolving this war with Belial.
I received this audiobook as an ARC for free from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Ooft, what an end to the series. I have been reading Shadowhunter books since my early teenager years so this was a long time coming. I have grown so completely attached to each character and family over time and I must say it is so well worth it to read the previous series. I will say that I wish I had reread the first two books in this series before I listened to this one just to refresh my memory but within a couple of chapters things were coming back to me. Without further a due, here are my thoughts.
Chain of Thorns is the last book in a three part series that follows the children of Tessa Grey and Will Herondale from the previous series. We leave off the second book with everything falling apart; there is tension between Matthew and his parabatai, James due to Cordelia, Cordelia and Lucie could not go through with their Parabatai ceremony and the side couple, Anna and Ari, Thomas and Alistair are also unhappy, with no one having confessed their true feelings. the Prince of Demons in getting closer to the group, and darkness is about to descend upon London.
I have been reading Cassandra Clare books for so long that they kind of feel like an inevitable part of me so I confess my reviews are slightly bias for her books. I think she is an immensely talented writer, with a phenomenal ability to do characterisation justice. Each character is given their own time to figure themselves and their unique issues out, yet someone they are all so completely intertwined - you cannot care about one without caring about the other. The point of views are constantly shifting, but just the right amount to be consistently intrigued and wanting more. Unlike some books there weren't any pov's that I was bored of and wanted to skip, which is always nice.
The plot moved along nicely, at a pretty steady pace. I will say this meant that I didn't really feel an immense and epic final battle, but that could also be because I was listening to it and so was interrupting the story multiple times. I really did enjoy listening to it though, it was a very comforting voice and cadence to have in my ear for over 24 hours.
The ending was nice, and tied everything up juts like the last book in a series should. I was smiling and pleased with how everything worked out. I would say that if I hadn't read the books that follow them, I would potentially fell that everything was almost too neat and happy, but since I know what is to come, I can see it from a different perspective.
Overall, this was a fantastic book with characters that I shall forever hold close to my heart!
I was so excited to read this last book in the Last Hours trilogy and it didn’t disappoint. As it’s the last book, you definitely need to read the first two books to know the events that happen in the lead up to the chain of thorns. Cassandra Clare has a way in writing her characters that makes you care about them so much! Even the side characters! I was gripped throughout the book and was satisfied with how the book ended. A must read for fans of Cassandra Clare. Highly recommend.
It's part of the Shadowhunters universe so I had to read it! And yes that universe has its ups and downs and Cassie's writing goes up and down with it, but no matter what you think of her writing you can't deny she can tell a compelling story. So while this was not my favourite, it did what I wanted a Cassie Clare book to do. It was light escapism and it rounded out the trilogy nicely.
A perfect ending to an amazing adventure.
I've loved everything about this, even though I'm not a big fan of love triangles and miscommunication, Cassandra Clare can do no wrong.
Thankyou for the ARC
‘Once you had lost everything, she reasoned, there was no reason not to embrace whatever small happinesses you could.’
This book was huge! Nearly 30 hours of Shadowhunter goodness!
The end. It’s the end. I don’t want it to end! The thought of never reading about my Will again makes me so sad!
So lets get into it. I must admit the first half was a slog, the only light and gasp moment part was a Paris bit!!!! However once I hit around 50%, I was hooked!
The angst, omg the angst! There was miscommunication everywhere and I was on the edge of my seat shouting ‘tell them’!!!!
Whilst I love James, Cordelia and Matthew for their own reasons, I don’t really care for love triangles but:
Lucie and Jesse,
Thomas and Alistair,
Anna and Ari,
I lived for them!!!!!
So many fab quotes that really resonated with me! Also, I’ll say no more apart from at 67% my heart was torn out!
I love being immersed into the Shadowhunter world, I am addicted and I never want it to end so I’m probably going to do a complete reread of all of them later on in the year!
