This was an absolutely amazing read. I loved the characterisations. The eye to medical details was fabulous. Usually most medical based books are cringeworthy. This one was done so well. The narrator was also good. I did find the slightly whiny sound used for the doctors narration, a little irksome. Probably because I couldn’t help but identify with her. But I got used to it. The rest of the narration was great. All in all I would definitely recommend this audiobook. It kept me hooked from first to last
This book had me questioning every interaction I've ever had with a Doctor. As someone that's had surgery to repair an ascending aortic dissection this one hit really close to home.
I've never stopped to consider what decisions someone in the medical profession could make when faced with unfathomable choices.
Imagine being at the top of your career, having everyone look up to you, having all of the things you'd always dreamed of just to have one person stand in the way... what would you do? That's what Dr. Anne Wiley will have to decide.
This is a psychological thriller at its best (in my opinion) it had me thinking and wondering and questioning all while keeping me glued to it.
Our narrator Gwendolyn Druyor
was wonderful, with a tone and inflection that lent itself fabulously to this story, adding so much depth and personality to our characters.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture Audio for providing a copy of this audiobook, I have voluntarily read and reviewed it and all thoughts and opinions are my own.
First of all---SO. MUCH. DRAMA. I absolutely devoured the audiobook of The Surgeon! Wolfe created an exceptional unraveling of secrets that had me guessing until the very end! If you enjoy some gentle suspense and getting caught up in a web of family secrets, you are sure to love this book!
I love thrillers but I just couldn't make myself go through the whole book. It is well-written and the narration is ok but I just could not connect with the book. It was so slow moving for some reason. It is just my opinion - I feel like a lot of people might enjoy it more. It was just was not for me this time.
I really enjoy medical thrillers and so wanted to like this book but unfortunately it was a little disappointing. I enjoyed the story but it seemed to move along very slowly and I felt my mind wandering at times and feel the book is a little too long. I don't mind an unlikeable character, but the surgeon, Anne,, was horribly self-pitying and totally got on my nerves.
I also disliked the narrator, who sounded a little too robotic.
If you like twists and surprises in a medial setting this is a good book. I was given an advance copy from NetGalley in audiobook format and it was easy to listen to and follow along There were more than a few surprises I didn’t see coming in this book. I enjoyed this book and was able to imagine the characters and settings with no issue of following along.
Format: audiobook ~ Narrator: Gwendolyn Druyor
Content: 3.5 stars ~ Narration: 3.5 stars
Trusted surgeon. Loving wife. Murderer?
Dr. Anne Wiley is a young and very successful heart surgeon. In her twelve-year career, she had never lost a patient. And one day, exactly this happens. A patient dies on her operating table. After his heart refuses to beat, she realizes she knows him. Did she kill her patient? Is she a murderer?
The story is told from three perspectives: Anne, Derrick, and Paula. All characters are narrated by Gwendolyn Druyor. In general, I liked her narration, except for the character of Anne.
I had mainly two issues with this novel. Anne is too perfect. She is a beautiful, rich, and perfect surgeon who never lost a patient in her twelve-year career. I’m not sure how probable this is. Next, Anne, as a successful female surgeon, should be a very strong character, but she didn’t seem this way to me. I guess this is partly the fault of the narration of Anne, which I have to admit, I didn’t like.
Otherwise, I was curious about the story, and I think this is a good novel with an interesting plot. The Surgeon is a medically well-researched novel. You may like it, as many other readers did.
Thanks to Bookouture Audio for the ALC and this opportunity! This is a voluntary review and all opinions are my own.
Thank you NetGalley for this Audio book ARC. This was my very first “read” in the form of an audiobook. This book has a great plot and Imthere we’re definitely a few twists in the story that I didn’t see coming! The medical information included throughout was very accurate and could apply to real life situations. I give this book a solid 3.5 stars. I probably would have rated it higher in print format as I personally felt it difficult to process everything going on in the story in the audio format, which was at no fault to the author nor the narrator.
Dr Anne Wiley has it all, including successful heart surgeon career and gorgeous husband running for Mayor. Then one procedure results in her first fatality and she suddenly realises who the patient is and secretly pleased he is dead. The hospital panel find no error and Anna’s name is cleared, but this doesn’t stop ASA Paula from pursuing Anna obsessively. But Paula has an alter motive for her pursuit of Anna.
As an audio book, I found this plot rather drawn out, the characters unlikable and the narrator completely monotoned and did not keep you engaged.
I really enjoyed this book, I loved the characters and the storyline and was totally surprised by the twists at the end.
I did find it difficult to really appreciate the audiobook though, I was put off by the narration. The strong clever doctor came across as whiny and annoying in the way that she was voiced and the voices given to all characters just didn't line up with their personalities for me.
I had the pleasure of listening to The Surgeon on audiobook - the narrator, Gwendolyn Druyor did a fantastic job bringing this book to life and kept be hooked throughout the whole book.
The book follows Dr. Anne Wiley, a surgeon who has a perfect record - that is until today. She tried to save her patient, but once she saw his face, she stopped. Could she have saved him if she continued? Did she ultimately kill him?
Dr. Wiley's life starts to unfold as she is obsesses over what happened. Her life gets thrown this way and that way - and slowly the bigger pictures comes to light.
I really liked the premise of this book. Overall the book as a whole was great. I enjoyed the storyline and loved the ending. I think that because it was such a slow reveal, I was a little bored during the middle of the book. But, I realized later that it was necessary for the ending to come together.
I do have a few questions left unanswered - some of the parts towards the ending didn't feel believable. However, I loved the twists and turns the author put into it. Some you could see before they revealed while others caught you completely off guard.
The Surgeon was a compelling, quick read and I would definitely recommend it.
Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for an advanced copy of this audiobook.
I got this book initially via my Kindle Unlimited subscription. When I realised the audio was available I thought I'd give it a go. I love when i can switch between reading and listening. Reading when I have the chance to sit down, and then being able to carry on with the audio when I'm busy or out walking is fab.
I really enjoyed this. An interesting read/listen.
The Surgeon is a good medical thriller. Easy read/listen interesting and intriguing. I liked the main character, Anna Whiley loses her first patient on the operating table. What then follows is Anna being investigated for a death that shouldn't have happened. But was it anything to do with Anna. Is there anything that could have been done differently.
Beating herself up Anna looks into what could or couldn't have gone wrong. This book had plenty of twists and turns that keep you engaged within the story. Leave you wondering if you are guessing correctly at what could have happened. One of those books that you want to keep reading.
I would recommend this book.
Trusted surgeon. Loving wife. Murderer?
Before my world came crashing down, I had it all. The successful career I dreamed of. The beautiful red-brick home where I could relax in front of the fire. The handsome, devoted husband whose blue eyes and charming smile always made me feel safe.
As I call time of death, my voice is steady. My colleagues stand hushed around me, their eyes on me, confused, concerned.
I have never lost a patient until today.
My hands tremble inside their gloves. I slide down the cold tiled walls, my heart racing in my chest.
I have never hated a patient until today.
But what choice did I have, once I recognized him?
And what will I do to protect myself, if someone learns the truth?
A totally gripping psychological thriller that will have you racing through the pages, gasping for breath until the final jaw-dropping twist. If you love Freida McFadden, Shari Lapena and The Girl on the Train, you won’t be able to put this down.
I found this interesting medical read with some of the plot devices a bit strange ie this was the first patient that she ever lost and then goes full blown anxiety re being arrested. The narrator did a really good job of separating out the two voices.
I am glad that I found this author and narrator and will be looking for more b y them.
I was given a free copy by netgalley and the publishers but the review is entirely my own.
A gripping read. Anne's patient dies on the operating table, then district prosecutor investigates Anne seemingly for no reason. Had me hooked from the start and could not put it down. Good characters, well plotted that moves along nicely. The narrator does a good job and let's you get lost in the story.
I received this Audiobook from Bookouture and Netgalley for a review.
I listened to this book as an audiobook and I had a hard time getting into it at first. The book itself was really good and had a great twist but the narrator was a struggle for me. She used different inflections for each character and I didn't mind when she was speaking from the attorney's prospective but the inflection she used for the doctor drove me nuts. She made her sound weak which clearly she isn't. Because of that I dragged it out but honestly once I got more into the storyline I really enjoyed it. But overall it is a great storyline and keeps the reader engaged. It does refer to past childhood trauma such as rape but not in detail.
I received this as an audio galley to listen to for free in exchange for my honest review. Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture Audio for giving me access.
I found the story to on the slower side but Wolfe was able to intrigue me enough to continue on. Two stories are intertwined into one and both have all sorts of secrets. Wolfe did a great job at creating unlikeable characters that you can't wait for karma to catch up to them.
This is a very entertaining thriller with plenty of twists and turns that had me gripped from start to finish.
The book centres around three main characters.: A surgeon (Anne), her husband Derrick and an Attorney, Paula, who happens to be the husband's lover. However, it is not just the husband Paula seems to want. Why would she want to bring Anne down so much? Family secrets, jealousy and revenge play significant parts throughout this fast paced book as we build towards an unpredictable final twist in the tale.
The narrator of the audiobook offers a very strong vocal contrast between Paula and Anne and whilst I found the ruthless tone assigned to Paula quite feasible I struggled with the feeble voice of Anne and couldn't envisage a top heart surgeon coming across as so naive and vulnerable. I think it would have been a 5 star read for me if I had not listened to the audio version.
I am grateful to NetGalley and the publishers for an ARC of this book and am leaving my honest review voluntarily.
This was an enjoyable read but really slow. I had a hard time staying engaged with the story because it felt like it was full of filler. In between the filler the story is amazing and suspenseful. The story is not what I thought it was going to be, which is a good thing. I don't think my version would have been as good. All in all, it is a good read, just slow for my liking.
I wasn't quite sure if I was going to enjoy this book at the beginning as it took a little bit to get it set up, but once it got past the first few chapters I was hooked! The surgeon is a strong woman who has proven herself in the hospital and has worked hard to have a successful career, has what she thought was a good marriage and yet has demons from her past that haunt her.
It's not at all the ending that I expected, but I will definitely check out more from this author.
This was my first book from Wolfe, but it won't be the last! It was superb, addictive and you just couldn't stop listening to it. Great narrator as well!
Thanks to NetGalley, the publisher and the author for the opportunity to listen to this ARC.
