'The Surgeon' by Leslie Wolfe is a suspense novel about a surgeon with a perfect surgery success record... until today. After losing her patient, she realizes that she recognizes him and starts to question whether she made a huge mistake or if she let him die intentionally. Is she a murderer, was she right in calling time of death or is something else at play?

I didn't enjoy the way the audiobook was narrated. Anne, who is supposed to be a highly successful and confident surgeon came across as very meek and timid. The male characters all came across as smarmy. I think Paula was the only character that sounded like she should- a high powered attorney with a bad attitude. Aside from the narration, I really enjoyed the book. I wish I would have read the actual book rather than listened to it.

The author's writing flowed and had a great pace. If I had more time in the day I might have finished this audiobook much sooner. I was on pins and needles the entire time I was listening. Some of the smaller twists were easy to guess, but the bigger twists were definitely a surprise. The ending was a bit abrupt, but because of the abruptness, I wanted there to be more to the book. I would totally recommend "The Surgeon" (in book form) to other readers,

Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for the Audio ARC for my honest opinion.

The Surgeon by Leslie Wolfe
Narrated by Gwendolyn Druyor

If you like your audiobook stories over the top, you might like this story. Dr. Anne Wiley has a patient die on the operating table, the first patient she has ever had so do. She isn't guilty of doing anything wrong until she stops doing the right thing. But surely no one will know what she did, how could they!

Meet Paula Fuselier, a determined assistant state attorney moving up in the world. She's going places but she has a hatred for a certain surgeon that she puts above all else in her life. She is going to make that surgeon pay. She is going to destroy that surgeon.

Dr. Wiley seems nice enough and it's hard to know if she really did something wrong. She is narrated as so whiney and overwrought and she may have good reason to be so but she'd be the last person who I'd want to operate on me. I want someone who has a bit more spine when things get wild.

Fuselier is so crazed that it's hard to see how she got as far as she did in her career. She's determined to stomp all over anyone who gets in her way. She is supposed to have a heart for underprivileged kids but she sure doesn't show it when she throws one under the bus to further her career. I can almost hear her spitting her fury, she's one fire breathing nut.

Neither woman ends up being that great of a planner or decision maker in a crisis. But I wanted to see where the story was going. I was sure there was more than what we see on the surface and I was right. And just maybe Dr. Wiley has more of a spine than I thought she did.

Anne is a celebrated cardio thoracic surgeon with a 100% survival rate from all her operations, that is until she is faced with the man who has haunted her nightmares since childhood.

Anne is also beautiful, appearing on billboards advertising the hospital, comes from a wealthy family and is married to an attractive and successful lawyer who is running for election as mayor.

To an outsider her life is perfect, until she crosses paths with Paula, an Assistant State Attorney who has Anne firmly in her sights and is determined to catch her.

Did Anne do all she could or can Paula finally convict her of murder?

My first book by this author so I don't know if a tendency towards the melodramatic is their usual style or possibly due to the narration, but good twists and worth a read.

It’s rare to find an audiobook that makes you want to read the book yourself but this is one of them, a definite listen on your commute

Anne is a heart surgeon who has never lost a patient, until today. After he dies on her table she realizes that she knows this man. Someone who has haunted her dreams since she was a child. Did she do all she could? Is she a murderer? Told from her point of view and The Assistant State Attorney Paula, this book kept me guessing. My first book from Leslie Wolfe, I enjoyed her writing style and I will definitely check out more of her books. The only thing I didn't love was the narrator's male voices. I think I would rather have read the book.

The premise of the book was really interesting and the weave of characters set up for a good mystery. The problem is the stakes never felt very high. Ok so the rich doctor who also has family money could lose her medical license, big whoop it's not like she will go hungry if she does. Her lawyer husband might not get elected as mayor, again not the end of the world. Sure those are their dreams that could be taken away but in juxtaposition to the stakes set in many other thrillers they just seem to fall flat here. This could also be because I didn't care much about any of the characters. Almost all of them did/said/thought something that kept me from rooting for them, I can't really say more on this without spoilers so I will keep it at that.

Speaking purely of the audiobook the narrator was pretty good, but not great. I did speed up the audio because it was read to slow for me (I do this with almost all of my audiobooks and its a simple button click to do so I don't fault it for that). There were some times where I felt the narrator could have added a bit more inflection to certain words to better express the emotions of the characters that kept it from being a great narration though.

Anne has a perfect life to anyone on the outside looking in. Her husband is handsome and a driven politician. She's a fantastic surgeon with a perfect record of never losing a patient, until today. This patient dying has put a target on her, and the secret is that she wanted him to die. With an investigation into the death, can she keep her secrets hidden?

I really liked this book! I listened to the audio version and really liked the narrator as well. She did a great job having voices for each character and has a beautiful voice. I really thought that I had the ending pegged, but I was wrong!!! The way the story unfolds and builds is wonderful! It has a somewhat slow build but you just have to know what happens next!

This was a really good thriller. It was very interesting to learn about the medical surgical profession, and all that's involved. Being a surgeon requires so much dedication. I have a new appreciation for surgeons.

Dr Anne Wiley is a successful cardiac surgeon it has not lost a patient, yet. But all that one date changes when a patient's heart cannot be brought back to life after a very simple procedure. She is happily married to Derrick, who is a successful lawyer running for mayor. She and Derrick live in her childhood home, where her mother who is a former surgical nurse, now a widow, resides as well. The three of them are very close and have a strong family bond.

Then one day out of nowhere, Paula (I don't know the spelling of her last name) who is an assistant district attorney, launches an investigation into the death of Dr. Wiley's patient. She is determined that the doctor murdered this patient and herein lies the story, for starters.

There was one twist that I did not expect at all. I kind of saw the end coming but it was still pretty twisty and I liked how everything ended. Not every marriage is what it seems and some people are haunted by their past.

I loved this book! I wanted to give this 5 stars so badly, and I think if I had read the book itself and not the audiobook I would. I didn’t love the narration. The story though had me from beginning to end, unexpected plot twists! So good! Highly recommend!! I will be looking for more books by this author!

A patient dies on the operating table just seconds after the surgeon recognizes his face. The scrutiny she is almost immediately subjected to by a specific state attorney is beyond stressful. In addition, this patient has stirred up trauma from the past. And what part does the handsome husband play in all of this? There are some surprising reveals that make for a page-turning read and I was racing through it to find out what would happen to our dear doctor. While the ending of this book is perfect for Gillian Flynn fans, I am just awarding four stars. I chose the audio version for most of my reading of this title. The narrator, Gwendolyn Druyor, was poorly cast in my opinion. Her papery thin, sometimes whiny delivery did not match with the version of "the Heart Girl" that I visualized while reading.

A good plot with good narration. Definitely one to reccommend. Good plot twists, as the narration moves between two different characters which it is quite easy to form strong opinions towards.

The advance reviews for “The Surgeon” were so good that I was excited to get approved for the ALC! Unfortunately, the narration was not great (for me) so that was a hurdle from the starting gate. The blurb was also a bit misleading as the surgeon’s patient was already dead on the table when she first recognized who he was. It diluted the whole premise of the book when there was no “did she or didn’t she” tension to follow. I have to admit that I also struggled with the plot and characters as the first half was so repetitive and every character was unsympathetic for the reader. It made me less invested once the twists started coming in the second half. I do have to admit though that a few of those twists almost made it worthwhile! This was my first book by Leslie Wolfe but I’ll still give another one a try.

I appreciate a good thriller that can have me get some twists right while getting others majorly wrong. This was fast-paced and an all around solid one?

Anne Wiley is a celebrated cardiothoracic surgeon in Chicago, IL. She’s never lost a patient in all of her time as a surgeon, until now. Something seems off in her surgery and her patient dies. She sees his face and realizes he’s someone from her past. While dealing with the death, she becomes the center of focus for an investigation into his death and if Dr. Wiley could, in fact, have saved her patient. Throughout the novel, we learn more about her history and the events that led up to the moment

First, I was immediately turned off by the constant switching between 1st and 3rd person POV. Neither bother me on their own but switching is frustrating (to me).

I did thoroughly enjoy these characters and seeing how everything would play out on page! I do feel like the ending was just a tad bit rushed and wish I could have had a little more from that. But overall, I definitely recommend this, especially as an audiobook!!

The biggest thank you to #NetGalley and Bookouture Audio for an ALC of this novel!

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.
So this one started off weird and I really wasn’t sure if I was going to like it or not. Once the two storylines started to fall into place and intersect I began to enjoy the book.
Quite a few surprises along the way as well that I did not expect at all. The ending was definitely a surprise.
Narrator did a good job. Enjoyed this one.

Anne is a cardiothoracic surgeon with zero patient deaths on her record. While preforming a complex surgery, the patient's heart fails to restart. She begins resuscitation without success. She looks at the patient's face to encourage her and realizes she recognizes him. After a minute or two more, she calls time of death, too early according to one of her colleagues. Anne is worried someone will find out that she may have murdered her patient but something else about his heart not starting doesn't feel right to her.
Soon, the assistant state prosecutor, Paula, comes to call but no one can figure out who notified her of a possible crime. Paula seems to be coming after Anne with a vengeance. After many twists and surprises, the truth is revealed.

The start of all the issues in this book is that Anne did not recognize who her patient was until the surgery was almost over. She had met him before surgery, but his identity was obscured. Having experience in this area of hospital work, it is unbelievable that Anne would not have seen her patient in pre-op before the surgery, at a minimum. She likely would have also been in the room while he was being prepped for surgery. I don't think this oversight would have bothered me so much if the whole book wasn't pinned on her not knowing who he was until that moment. It is also completely unbelievable that she would have practiced for 12 years in this specialty without a patient death.
I also have an issue with how Anne is preformed in the audiobook. She feels soft, meek and lacking confidence. A woman does not become a surgeon in a highly competitive specialty without being a fierce badass.

Overall, I think this book would be a wonderful pick for someone who doesn't have first hand experience in OR protocols. It was so distracting to me that I wasn't able to enjoy the rest of the story as much.

ARC audiobook provided in exchange for an honest review.

The narration of this book was spot on! She really embodies all the characters and makes it an incredibly easy listen. The story is about a surgeon who loses her first patient and secrets are revealed as the hospital and DA has to determine if it was an accidental death or malpractice. There are many twists, my favorite being toward the end, some I saw coming, others caught me completely off guard! I would definitely recommend to anyone who enjoys psychological thrillers and suspenseful books!

Wow, what a great absorbing book. Kept me listening right from the start. A happy married surgeon with a brilliant career. Until she falls fowl of her husbands lover who has devoted her life to her down fall. It starts out as a usual routine day until she goes into surgery, where she comes across a nightmare from her past. So we’ll read and such a good story life stopped for me until I finished it

This was a great start but the voice on the audio book didn’t kee my interest. This is a DNF for me. When the book comes out I’d love a chance to read and review it. I just couldn’t get past the audio on this one.

Thank you Netgalley, Bookouture Audio and Leslie Wolfe for allowing me to preview The Surgeon.
This book was such a wild ride filled with suspense, jealousy, and betrayal, it keeps you guessing and on the edge of your seat until the end.
Anne, a cardiac surgeon known for her perfect record of not losing a patient in surgery. Until one day, that record is shattered on a patient that has a personal connection to Anne. Did she really do all that she could to save him?
Paula is an assistant state attorney who is looking to climb the ladder in her career and willing to do any and everything to get there. She begins investigating the death of Anne’s patient and is ruthless in her treatment of the suspect despite her reputation and record at being flawless. Little does Anne know, they have a lot more in common than she realizes.
I would most certainly recommend this book to my fellow readers and look forward to reading more of the author’s work.
