Ava Loves Animals is a fact-filled tale that follows a budding young vet through a day in her life, showcasing her passion for animals. Great for an early elementary classroom!

At first, I thought this will be "do this when you saw this animal on the road" book, but actually more informative than that. This is practically a handbook on animals: what are the animals, where they live, how they reproduce to the food chain scheme. One super interesting book, and one to read when you really want to adopt one.

This is the perfect book for kids who love animals.

Although it's a picture book, the story is longer than the average picture, so also suitable for older kids.

Ava loves animals and gets to help in the family vet and animal rescue.

Although it's a children's story, there are some good nuggets of info about how we can look after the animals and our planet.

Our kids are growing up surrounded by people in the veterinary profession, so they enjoyed seeing that represented in the book.

Cute children’s story of an on how children can do whatever they set their mind to. Ava loves rescuing animals and finds new information on them all the time. Thank you NetGalley for the chance to read this book in exchange for my honest feedback!

My animal-loving granddaughter declared this a 5-star read! The book incorporates a simple story, nice illustrations and lots of animal facts to engage young readers. It would be a great addition to any homeschooler's library. Thanks to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group for the opportunity to preview this book.

I found this Nature Heroes book and absolutely had to share. It’s a bit longer than most picture books and seem like a really great option for slightly older kids (6-8ish) to dig into environmental issues and animal rescue.

The book follows Ava as she shows us around her grandparents’ farm and animal rescue center. She shows us how they take care of the animals at the animal hospital and we get to follow along as she makes a run to town. Along the way she meets up with friends to talk about things like life cycles, tracks, and touched on the leave no trace philosophy.

These are such fun books full of nuggets of wisdom and ideas for making our world a better place.

"I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own."

This is the type of book I would have wanted read to me over and over again as a child. It is very detailed and covers a variety of animals.

The animal guides are also an fun part of the book where kids will learn things like animal groups and the life cycle of the frog.

Great book with too much information to take in the first time. You'll want to reread for sure

This is such a beautifully illustrated and fact filled, educational book for little animal-lovers everywhere. Covering everything from the purpose of rescue centres to the life-cycles of various different animals. This was a big hit in our house 😊

It is rare I don't enjoy a children's book, but I found myself disappointed by this one. While it packed a lot of information about animals and nature into one book, it wasn't very interesting or entertaining. It didn't hold my attention, and I doubt it would hold the attention of a child for very long either.

Also, if you're going to name a book with direct reference to "rescuing animals", then if should focus on rescue, shouldn't it? This one was all over the place.

Especially disappointing were the computer-generated illustrations. They lowered the interest level of the material even further. They were so very bland.

In a Nutshell: The title doesn’t do this book justice! A great story and plenty of fun animal facts. A must for every little animal lover.

Ava is a little girl who, as the title clearly indicates, loves animals. She lives with her grandparents who run an animal rescue centre, and through their work, Ava meets and helps plenty of animals. Today, they are expecting an animal arrival, and Ava needs to buy some things to make this new visitor comfortable. On the way to the store, Ava spots several animals and several friends and has nice interactions with them all.

Through this simple story structure, you might have pictured the beauty of the story and its focus on keeping animals safe. But you can’t even begin to imagine how much the author has managed to fit into this little picture book! And without any of it feeling overwhelming or cluttered! The author is a vet, and her knowledge of and love for animals reveals itself on every page.

Through Ava’s narration, we get to see plenty of animal-related information in the book:
🐼 How rescue centres operate.
🐼 Animal types: mammals, amphibians, reptiles, fish…
🐼 Animal groups: Herbivores, carnivores, omnivores.
🐼 Difference between pets, farm animals, and wild animals, and how we (ought to) approach each of these.
🐼 Things to carry with you on a nature walk.
🐼 Fun animal facts.
🐼 Food chains and ecosystems.
🐼 Habitats & homes.
🐼 Plastic pollution & recycling.
Just see the astounding range of topics covered! There’s also a final section that speaks about how we can be a ‘real-life animal hero’, with many pragmatic tips that children (and adults) can implement.

I cannot forget to mention Mini, Ava’s little pet mouse, who adds humour to the book with her witty remarks.

The one thing that might have worried me about this story was if it advocated rescue attempts without speaking of being careful. But the author has that covered aspect wonderfully. Wherever an animal in distress is mentioned, the content has a note about whether and how the animal should be approached. In fact, right at the start of the book, before the story even begins, there’s a bulleted list of guidelines to follow while meeting animals. The information is so practical that I found no point to complain about!

The vocabulary is mostly easy, with the tougher words being only the biological or zoological terms. But these are well-explained, so children should not have that much of an issue with comprehension.

The illustrations are a bit on the dull side, with earth tones dominating the colour palette. But I guess this suits a book that delves right into the heart of nature. The sketches are really sweet though, with both children and animals drawn cutely.

This book is a part of the Nature Heroes series that focuses on a group of friends who are passionate about nature. Each book features a different child who has a favourite topic that they are fascinated by: ‘Billy Loves Birds’, ‘Bella Loves Bugs’, ‘Ava Loves Rescuing Animals’ and ‘Pedro Loves the Planet’! In Ava’s book, Billy, Bella and Pedro make special guest appearances. I’d love to get my hands on the remaining three titles of the series!

The book is officially aimed at readers aged 4-7 years. I think the younger ones in that range will enjoy the story and some tips. But the older kids (which could also include tweens) will find the entire book entertaining and enlightening.

In short… Schools, homes, libraries - buy this book! It will be helpful and beloved to young and not-so-young animal lovers. The perfect combination of fiction and nonfiction.

5 animal-loving stars.

I received a copy of this book through Netgalley. This is my honest review.

This short story features a girl who, as the title suggests, loves saving animals. It provides helpful tips for young children about what they should do if they find an animal they think needs help (always get an adult who knows what they're doing). But it also talks about ways we should behave so that the animals don't need human intervention in the first place, such as leaving nests of bunnies alone to see if the mother returns before doing anything else.

The illustrations were colorful and bright with crisp lines, showing all the various animals and the ways the children in the story were interacting with them (mostly watching from afar because these are wild animals after all). I'd be okay reading this book with kids a few times before I'd want to claw my eyes out. Overall I give this story 4.07 out of 5 stars.

This story is an adorable and educational book for animal-lovers everywhere! My daughter absolutely loved the pictures and it was filled with fun facts and loads of scientific knowledge! As a mom and a STEM teacher, I think the book is spectacular for introducing different species, teaching about life cycles, using non-fiction text features (like labels, bold words, captions), and much more!

Ava Loves Rescuing Animals by Jess French is a book I wish I had as a child! It mixes a fun fictional story along with tons of facts and information about animals, ecosystems, and other natural science. Duncan Beedie's illustrations are detailed but still fun enough to appeal to young readers. The book also includes insightful information and tips about animal care and rescue that will inspire readers to get involved in their community.

A really nice kid's level book about how to treat animals, & the environment. It's packed with great 'kid level' info...re different animal groups, what they eat, where they live, how to approach/not approach them. The illustrator does a fantastic job & these drawings might easily inspire conversation during the reading of the book. I'd definitely, easily recommend this book to everyone with young children. Yep, it's worth 5 stars!

This fascinating book introduces the reader to the basics of fauna in many ways. There are many safe ways to observe fauna in the wild, there are Rescue Centers that house them temporarily and have a veterinarian to keep them healthy. Fauna are animals, lizards, fish, insects and more. Remember: NEVER APPROACH WILD ANIMALS.
The illustrations by Duncan Beedie are fun, simple, colorful, and delightful.
Well suited for reading WITH someone of any age including ESL, and great for gifting to anyone, but especially to a school or your public library!
