A great insight to one of the toughest challenges for all ultrarunners and the people brave enough to try it. Then come back for more pain. Then come back again and again year after year!
The author's description of his preparation, both physical and mental is quite brutal to read, but you definitely finish this book with added respect for those that rise to the challenge. A great read for all would-be ultras out there!
I only found out about the Barkley Marathons fairly recently as I have become more serious about running and am trying to get myself out there and put in the time on feet and milage. This race is absolutely incredible and I love the history and traditions attached. Clearly the vast majority of people reading the book will never take on an ultra long distance race, let alone this particular challenge, but that doesn't stop it being absolutely captivating to read about. I like how this book is written with a focus on the race but also letting us know more about Michiel and his relationship with running. If you have even a passing interest in physiology, sport, or what a human can endure physically and mentally, then I think you would enjoy this book. I loved it and am so grateful for the opportunity to have read!
