A Death at the Party has an intriguing concept as the give away is in the title and the first chapter of the book. The hook is to make you find out who has died and why. But this one fell a bit flat for me. I didn’t particularly like any of the characters, and whilst I liked the flashbacks and how the storylines flowed together, I just didn’t feel that the characters were particularly developed. A good read, that had some nice twists in places though.

A Death at the Party by Amy Stuart is a reverse telling a story which I always like it is a format that captivates readers by revealing the outcome while leaving the journey shrouded in mystery.

Despite the novel's strengths, the main character's cold and unfriendly demeanor initially posed a challenge for engagement. However, as the narrative unfolded, it became apparent that this portrayal was intentional on the author's part. While it took time to invest emotionally in the story, it ultimately served to enhance the overall experience.

The plot, though somewhat predictable for seasoned thriller readers, manages to maintain an enjoyable and gripping quality.

I found A Death At The Party a bit mediocre for a thriller/suspense novel. It was a good story, but nothing substantial, a story that has been done plenty of times before.

A little bit hard to get into this but persevered and enjoyed the tale once caught. A satisfying conclusion but suspect some might give up before getting gripped.

Nadine is preparing herself for a party at her home that evening. A party thrown to celebrate the 60th birthday of her mother who is a well known novelist.
The book starts at the end. You meet Nadine in the basement of her home and a death has occured. You don't know who the victim is yet. We then jump back to the begining of the day to see how everything unfolds.
Ultimately this book is about relationships, and the shared history between people.
This was a great read, and I liked the fact that the victim remains a mystery until the end.

A great fun different read full of mystery and plenty of twists with interesting characters. A would have liked it to be a bit more fast paced but overall an enjoyable read.

This is the first book I have read by this author and I can’t wait to enjoy many more.

I devoured this book, it was so fast paced and the story was so enticing I didn’t want to put it down.

Thank you NetGalley and publisher for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

A different take on the murder mystery. The story opens with the death of someone in a bathroom and then goes on the show how that point was reached, whilst not revealing who the victim is. Clever stuff.

The party is for the sixtieth birthday of a successful author and the book covers one day in the preparation and the actual party. The last party the author had was thirty years before, and that didn't end well either. As the plans fall into place, the guests discuss how they are all linked with their shared history. Of course, there are secrets and revelations aplenty.

This is an enthralling read that looks at complex relationships, power and resilience. Told from the perspective of the daughter organising the party, in the first person, the dynamics of the family, friends, colleagues and neighbours are exquisitely drawn. Good pacing and well written, this novel includes modern situations and age-old morality with, at times, an uncomfortable intimacy. Compelling, tense and not what I expected. Recommended.

This book was not really very interesting to me. I get the fact that she had a party to organise, but I would have felt less irritated if she had got on and organised anything, instead of getting sidetracked with lots of other characters.

I found myself struggling with this one I couldn’t get into it and found it a bit boring, didn’t care about the characters so I found it hard to read and get through.

A relativively short read, Death at the Party wastes no time in getting started. The death is at the start of the novel, and then we jump back to the morning of the party and discover everything that happened in the lead up to the death.

This immediately made me read on; I had to know who died and why!

The novel follows Nadine, a forty year old family orientated woman who is throwing her 60 year old mum a birthday party. Its tinged with sadness as the last party her mum had -her 30th- ended with her 15 year old sister being found dead… Needless to say, emotions are running high.

The community they live in is a tight knit one; everyone knows everyone else, and there is a lot of shared history to go round. As past details are revealed, the reader can start to speculate on what led this group of people together, and whether there are any skeletons in closets we should know about.

The narrative stays with Nadine, so we don’t get much insight into other characters’ thoughts or feelings. This works well though, as we are with Nadine every step of the way as she discovers long hidden secrets. We can feel what she feels, and understand her thought process throughout.

I felt the story had good pace, was easy to read and consistently made me want to read on. The revelations that came at the conclusion were satisfying and made me happy that the villain of the text was dead, though I did feel it ended quite abruptly.

Unusual in that there wasn’t too many layers to this book; it wasn’t a complex, multi-faceted thriller with endless twists and turns. Instead, a straight-up and understated yet well written drama that was easy to get absorbed in. A great read!

Such a very satisfying conclusion to a slow burn of a story that gathers momentum nicely! Nadine is holding a sixtieth birthday party for her mother, the famous author Marilyn Millay! However, it is also the anniversary of the tragic death of her mother’s much younger sister Colleen whose unfortunate demise was discovered by Nadine herself! Isobel, Nadine’s daughter, is upset due to her best friend having overdosed and still critical in hospital plus there’s a hungry journalist forever in the background! The build up to the party is full of twists and turns and the outcome does not disappoint!

This opens with the main character and party hostess, Nadine, leaving an unknown man to die on her basement floor. Then restarts 24 hours earlier, leading back to the who, what, why? Despite all the action being crammed into 24 hours there's multiple plot and time lines naturally weaved in to gradually reveal Nadine’s motivation for murder. It's a quick, enjoyable read but more of a nice to read rather than must read, in my opinion.

It starts with a body in the basement, and the fun begins there.

A fun domestic thriller/mystery, for all of you nosey neighbours that like to keep tabs on all of the people in your street, this is the story for you!

A Death at the Party by Amy Stuart opens with our party hostess, Nadine Walsh, walking away from a man close to death on her basement floor. Who is he? What happened? And why?

Well, strap in. Because from that banger of an opening, we travel back thirteen hours to the morning of the event. Nadine's throwing a party for her mother's sixtieth birthday. Her mother, Marilyn, is a beloved author, famed for her rags to riches success story. Marilyn no longer celebrates her birthday after a devastating family tragedy occurred at her thirtieth. But thirty years have now passed, and it's time everyone moved on... isn't it?

Nadine is an incredible main character. She manages to be likeable and unlikeable at the same time - she has done some morally questionable things, and yet I found myself rooting for her throughout. There are a couple of side plots running, with a couple of neighbours and a seedy journalist hanging round, but it's the relationship between Marilyn and Nadine, mother and daughter, that stole the show for me. I adored their banter, the way they bounced off each other, and the way they looked out for each other. Were some of the plot twists completely reliant on coincidence? Sure. Was it all believable? Nope. But was it highly entertaining? You bet!

What could have been a very predictable domestic thriller ended up being a smart, twisted toppling of the old boys club. And don't you love to see it.

A very quick read, but one I'd happily recommend to anyone looking for a decent thriller. It would make an incredible mini-series too, it reminded me of some of the stuff Reese Witherspoon has been producing for TV. Loved it!

Nadine Walsh is hosting a party to celebrate the birthday of her celebrity author mother. Taking place over the period of the day, the story opens with Nadine in the basement bathroom with a body, but we don’t discover who until the end of the novel when the secrets and histories of family and friends have been revealed. The story is a real page turner and kept me totally engrossed. I had no idea who was the victim until the very end of the novel. It’s a quick read with many plot lines but the author does a very good job of weaving them all together seamlessly. I thoroughly recommend. Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for giving me the ARC of this novel. in return for an honest review.

Whilst I really enjoyed this book, I’d have like the death at the party to have actually been featured a little more. It had a good cast of characters though and I liked that the chapters were short. Whilst it was a bit predictable that didn’t stop me enjoying the book at all and I got through it super fast!
