3.75 stars. This series is full of conspiracies and mind control tactics. I enjoyed the first book in the series (which I read not long ago), as well as the second. I liked the storyline in this second book better, to me it was more conspiracy- and less zombie-like, but the pacing and balance was a bit more consistent in the first book. All in all, I enjoyed these books and since the ending seemed to be slightly open there might be a third book coming.
It’s hard to tell much about the storyline without going into detail, but in the first book you learn about mind control experiments performed by a secret organization. This book goes a step further and plots secret government agencies and secret organization against each other, fighting through mind control tactics. One of the MCs is also a powerful weapon and there are some good action scenes.
I easily read the first 50% of the book enjoying the constant changing reality due to the mind control games, what is reality, who to trust? Unfortunately, between 50 and 75% the book lost me for a while as the unconscious world took precedent and I had trouble understanding what was going on or what to believe. This was a representation of how the MCs experienced reality, but for me it was too much time in limbo. Luckily, the last quarter of the book was full of action again and pulled me back into the story.
In the first book Elle and Cass (the two MCs) meet under unconventional circumstances, of which I will not say more in case somebody wants to read the first book, and they fall for each other. In this book however, they are almost the entire time separated so I would not recommend this book for the romance. That said, I did like them as a couple and was rooting for them to get together again.
Walker has come up with an interesting plot with several twists and various mind control and action scenarios. As mentioned, the ending does feel a little open ended, if this were to be the last book then I would have liked a bit more closure. However, if this is the opening to a third book I would be interested in reading it.
I received an ARC from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Curse of the Gorgon was an interesting but complicated read for me. Cass Hunt is a fascinating creature and her relationship with Elle is enjoyable to read. I was happy to see that the book didn't fall prey to falling into classic tropes regarding this style of writing! However, the start of the book was rough for me, it was difficult for me to get into. There felt like a lot of character interaction and hidden meanings in them that I felt like I was missing key information. This also felt like a book that would have been more enjoyable with a physical copy, so I will be ordering one of those soon and requesting my Library purchase this book in the mean time.
Olympicorp wants world domination and will settle for nothing less. Cass Hunt is programmed by Olympicorp to work as their assassin at their command. Elle Pharell is working as an internet journalist fighting the good fight behind causes she believes in. Elle meets Cass in Kuwait while following a story about a young US army soldier who committed suicide. Their attraction and love for each other has set into motion actions and reactions that will turn their lives upside down.
The premise for this series takes an interesting twist away from the many books and movies that have used this idea in the past. Walker successfully instills the sense of mental chaos and personal lack of trust in her readers as she does in her characters. You will constantly question the character’s sanity as well as your own at times. This intrigue is a constant force to keep the pages turning to an action packed ending.
I received an advance review copy from Bold Strokes Books through NetGalley. I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Perhaps if I had known this book was a sequel, I might have read the one before it first.
Not knowing what was going on, or why, or who any of the characters were might have helped this one make more sense.
It was engaging, but I didn't know what I needed so that I could enjoy it.
Not bad, but the fact that it is a sequel should have been mentioned.
This is a sequel to Rise of the Gorgon. I actually thought I’d read it but I think it was only a sample. I would have had a better idea of some of what was going on in this book had I read the first book. On saying that I did quite like the story even though I found it confusing some of the time. I do think though that towards the end when Elle and Dr. Stevens were on their own that Elle could have been more pro active instead of letting Stevens do more or less what she wanted. Quite futuristic in some respects and yet politics and power never change.
Really good science fiction paranormal story. This was an action packed suspense filled book. The first chapter had me on the edge of my chair and turning pages till the very end to find out what happened next. The relationship between Cass and Elle was very well written and their connection was very strong, even though they were apart through most of this story. The villains were really diabolical and crazy scary at times especially with all the experiments and mind control going on. Cass was a very strong heroic character to me and Elle was portrayed as a victim, but was just as heroic and strong. Her family was a bit out there especially Elle's mother who was a bit on the power hungry rule the world agenda trip. There's so much more to sea out this book, but you'll just have to read it too find out what they are. I would definitely recommend this book to my friends and family and I look forward to the next book in this series.
Thank you Bold Strokes Books, Inc., Tanai Walker, and NetGalley for the ARC.
I really liked this book. Greek mythology was referenced through out the book. Cass and Elle are the main characters and they get seperated from each other. We follow both Elle and Cass as they try to find each other. Cass is Wraith that is trying to out get out of the company that owns her and abuses her powers. Cass is finding out who she is. Elle is just trying to survive.
This book was fast-paced and there wasn't a lot of down time between action scenes. I do with there was more back story to Cass and Elle before they were seprated from each other. So we could feel more the connection between them.
I would definitely reccomend reading this book.
This is a part 2 story about Elle Pharell who is an investigative journalist. Elle meets Cassandra Hunt in book one while in Kuwait investigating the death of an army buddy friend. Elle believes that some type of biochemical experiment was done on her friend.
As it turns out in both books there is a global conspiracy group that is doing biochemical psychotherapy on people to turn them into zombies that can be controlled to do as the group wishes. Some of these wraiths develop super human strength and others have the ability to read minds.
Both Ellie and Cass are experimented on and through a time space gap they find each other mentally and use the love they have for each other to fight off the mind control agents.
I liked book one better because it has more action and plot than book two. Book two switches back and forth between both MCs point of view. A large part of the book takes place with Elle in captivity and under mind control of her captors. At times it’s hard to follow and understand what is real and what is her imagination. The side characters are very active parts of both books, I would have liked a lot more development of the characters and backgrounds. So I could understand what their roles were. But maybe that’s the authors intent to make you feel the confusion that Elle and Cass feel though out the book.
I would strongly recommend reading book one first., to understand the storyline and each character’s background.
