I have binge read all 5 books in this wonderful series and at the end of each book I swear it's my favourite. This book is no exception apart from the fact its a male in the Berger family who travels back through time. Ivor Thoresson, Linnear and Maddie's Foster brother finds a silver amulet and is drawn to a woman with red/gold curls who appears to be in distress. Travelling back to the Norway in the 9th century he meets Ellisif the woman in his dream.
As with all these books Christina brings 9th century Viking life to the 21st century. Her writing is descriptive and very well researched. A perfect Timeslip novel
I’ve been looking forward to this book ever since I read the last book in the Runes series and it far exceeded my hopes and expectations! It's a wonderful love story. Ivar is a fabulous hero, strong, honourable and brave, and Ellisif a lovely, spirited heroine. I really enjoyed the way that their relationship grew and developed, theway they started to trust each other and the attraction sizzling between them. There was a real tenderness in the way they related to one another. I also enjoyed seeing Ivar get to know his cousin Thorald and the bond of friendship between the two men. As always the story is steeped in Christina's superb atmospheric descriptions of the Viking age. Romantic, fascinating and gripping, Promises of the Runes is one of my favourites of the series.
A lovely story of the romance between Ellisif and Ivar, both of them unwilling for various reasons, but attracted to each other all the same. He is a time traveller, who has travelled back in time to the Viking age. I will not say what the couple do about their mutual attraction, which is only one part of a fascinating tale, but an important part for me. This is the best book Christina Courtenay has written so far, in my opinion. I would highly recommend it.
Adored this wonderful fifth book in Christina Courtenay's 'Runes' series. It was like diving back into a much-loved and much-missed world. There are links between all these Viking time slip romances, but each is set in a different place and for someone like me who is fascinated by history the detailed backgrounds are a great addition to the developing love stories. Now I want to travel to Norway! I wonder if I, too, can find a way to travel back in time... If not, reading this book was the next best thing.
Promises of the Tunes by Christina Courtnay
A brilliant read by this wonderful author who always seems to bring alive her characters . I love time slip books and this one is up there with the best
Ivar Thoresson finds an amulet and has visions of a woman and wants to meet her.
We are taken on a great journey and it is wrote in such a way you can almost feel you have travelled along with him.
Loved it.
In Promises of the Runes, Ivar Thoresson feels as if he can't go back in time, he'll regret it for the rest of his life. Then he finds an amulet and has a vision of a woman. Now he has to go. He prepares for the expediton, not telling anyone in his family what he's up to. He wants to experience the ninth century for himself, and perhaps meet one of his ancestors, and even if he feels he knows what to expect, he has no idea what it's store for him.
When I read the first book in the Runes series, I was hooked. Finally stories about Vikings that wasn't all about killing and fighting. There's plenty of that too, of course, it wouldn't be a proper Viking story if not, but it's so much more than that. The research is superb and I love the fascinating descriptions of Viking life. For me it was especially exciting to read about Ivar in Norway. I so enjoyed the image of Viking ships sailing up the Oslo fjord, and then following the coast line further north.
There is romance and suspense, and quite a few moments where I had to hold my breath, and just had to read on. Christina Courtney writes her stories so seemlessly, so beautifully and so spellbinding. I loved everything about this book.
Thank you to the publisher and Netgally for giving a copy of the book.
