The Bone House starts with the discovery of the old remains of a baby being fished out of a lake. From the discovery of how the baby got there, to what actually happened to the baby, this story also is about the police woman in charge of this case.
I actually enjoyed this story immensely. There were enough side stories and depth of each character to keep things moving along in an interesting way. My only drawback was the supernatural element, slight as it was. I didn't enjoy Eliot's involvement to the plot, but maybe I need to read the first 2 books in the series to appreciate it,
Thank you to Netgalley for the opportunity to read this great book.
When a baby’s pram with a skeleton inside is found in a lake in Slayton police start to investigate the incident.
This is the third book in a series, I hadn’t read the previous books but there was plenty on the back story explained so I could read it as a stand alone.
Some twists and turns in this creepy story about the former inhabitants of an old house.
Thank you to NetGalley and Embla Books for my e-copy in exchange for an honest review.
The Bone House is the third book in the Slayton Thriller series, and if there’s one thing I love about this series is how CREEPY it is! Caroline Mitchell is genius at creating a sense of malevolence which simmers and bubbles away below the surface from the start. Before you ask “Yes” The Bone House can be read as a stand-alone, although that’s not to say I wouldn’t recommend you read this series in order just because it’s so good! One of the unusual aspects of this series and one that makes it stand out from other crime series is the element of horror/supernatural that runs through throughout. It’s definitely a book to read during the day or with the lights on!
Detective Sarah Noble is back and with the help of forensic investigating another utterly spine chilling case in the town of Slayton. After a freak-event, the waters of Slayton’s lake are dredged, revealing a dark, long-held secret. An old pram is pulled found, with the bones of a baby still strapped inside. Characters are just as important as the setting, the relationship between Sarah and Elliott Carter, a young boy who has premonitions, continues to flourish.
Slayton is a strange, macabre little town that’s full of unnerving myths, legends, and eccentric characters. Which is great, as it creates an atmosphere that conjures up a sense of foreboding that stays with the reader at each turn of the page. Caroline Mitchell has taken a premise built around a simple mystery and created something complex and unique. There’s so many threads that install a sense of fear in the reader. The visual descriptions of The Bone House gave me the Heebie Jeebies! I enjoyed the well-placed twists and turns that kept me guessing, another cracking read from Caroline Mitchell.

The Bone House by Caroline Mitchell is a gripping new crime thriller full of thrills and twists and part of a series. I did not read the other books, but I felt that this book is okay as a standalone book.
The story is about an old pram pulled from a lake with the bones of a baby still strapped inside. And it's the moment Cora has been dreading.
With the help of forensic anthropologist Sophia Hudson, Detective Sarah Noble gets to the bottom of a cold case that refuses to stay in the past. Will she survive the secrets of the bone house?
The cover drew me to the book, and the synopsis sounded intriguing. The plot was good, and I enjoyed getting to know the characters. At first, I thought this was going to be like a sci-fi, supernatural story, but it wasn't. The atmosphere added to the suspense of the story and mystery.
The author weaved in good red herrings and twists. A good introduction to this series for me and this author.
Four out of 5 stars for me.

I absolutely loved this! It was the perfect mix of psychological and maybe a little bit supernatural..... but without being supernatural lol! It builds the tension, it has the most eerie and unsettling atmosphere which you'd normally only find with a horror/ ghost story but that same tension is brought to this thriller and it works amazingly well.
I loved the plot, its multilayered and so cleverly written to balance everything and have it all coexist without every getting messy or leaving plot holes in the end.
I was so invested in the characters and loved that you did get such a clear sense of who they were and a bit of insight into their personal life's and struggles which again, makes you more invested in the outcome.
I loved every second of it and was straight online to download every other book the author has ever written!
There were just so many twists and turns and red herrings thrown in that you'll never be able to predict what's behind it all or who's responsible. The book has a good pace e throughout and there is constantly things happening and things being revealed. It is one of those "just one more chapter" type books that end up keeping you up all night
Rounding up to three stars
This works well as a stand alone, considering it was part of a series.
I fidnt once feel overwhelmed with the back history, though there were enough hints dropped to make you wonder at what came before.
I didnt ever really feel I got into this book, I can't be sure why.
I liked how it was every day stuff, then suddenly a different creepier narration.
Interesting plot lines, and for fans of the series, the characters move on nicely.
