A great story with so many twists and shocks to it. Almost impossible to put down, this book will have you up all night!
A gripping read that had me racing to the end. Great characters and plot. Really enjoyed reading this book and would recommend.
It left me disappointed.
This had all the elements I like I a book, a fast moving integrate plot, a nasty untouchable villain, feisty characters and a s surprise ending. However, for me it was spoilt by so many overly long and detailed descriptions of things like the minutia of scenery on a long road trips and of the very full back stories of minor players. This made it hard for me to read. I almost have up on this book a number of times.
A very enjoyable read, a body is found on a beach but was he the intended target? Information that certain people would like to be kept quiet. Some good characters well plotted it kept me interested to the end.
Thanks to Hodder and Stoughton and Netgalley for a review copy
A fairly run-of-the-mill American conspiracy thriller involving a refugee from the Iraq war who finds himself the target of an assassination attempt. The police investigating the murder of a person connected to him then unpeel layers of secrets and cover-ups to reveal the motivation behind this attempt on his life whilst trying to keep one step ahead of the would be assassins. Might work better on screen than on paper.
With thanks to the author, the publisher and NetGalley for an opportunity to read and review an early copy.
I found this book quite hard at the beginning as there were a lot of American references that I did quite understand however as soon I realised many were related to the war effort, or specific areas of the country I learnt to gloss over them.
Ok back to the story, I enjoyed the cat and mouse thriller aspect. In a nutshell man finds body, man finds out he was likely intended target, with police support man tries to stay one step ahead of killers.
It had a good pace, some interesting additional storylines and was well written.
An American war crime book
This was very American and very violent
I enjoyed the book but found it difficult to follow in parts.
It is well written
This one was a little too military for me. At times I really wasn’t sure what was being referred to and found myself a little lost. The overall premise of the story is good however, a veteran has information that others would like him to keep quiet and will do everything they can to achieve this. At times the story turns gruesome and isn’t for the soft hearted, but what thriller is. Not my favourite read, but enjoyable all the same. Thank you to Netgalley for the advance reader copy.
Powerful, violent, very American but very well written and plotted and although somewhat complex a highly readable thriller which I found, to my surprise, extremely readable.
My thanks to NetGalley, the publishers HodderStoughton and the author Kevin Powers for this ARC in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.
This novel has a good basic premise, a good storyline, but I found it very difficult to read. It was too ‘American’ for a British reader with lots of colloquialisms that I didn’t understand. It is a violent thriller and is exciting but not really enjoyable.
Absorbing and exciting action thriller, there is more to this than meets the eye and the enthralling part is you have to keep reading to find out what it is.....
Former US Army interpreter Arman goes for his morning swim, but his schedule is late, he finds a body on the beach and this is where the story begins.. What unfolds is a great read....
Detective Catherine Wheel and her assistant have very little to go on but her steady pace and her determination bring everything out into the open.
A five star read
The world of the story is interesting -it links veterans, an Iraqi translator, private military contractors and political operators - but I had a few issues with A Line in the Sand. The characters are two-dimensional, there is a sameness and sentimentality about the military (every character with a connection has to deliver a homily at some point).
The oddest thing is the way that the two detectives throw in their lot with a number of other characters, for no discernible reason, happily tossing around confidential information and putting them at risk. On the plus side it's well written and quite page-turny and I was curious enough to finish it.

A body with no apparent identification found on a beach. An Iraqi , previously working as an interpreter finds himself struggling to survive PTS compounded by the loneliness of life in America after the death of his family in suspicious circumstances. A young reporter intent on securing a scoop related to a government agency hindered by her dependency on drink to help deal with the death in action of a much loved sibling. All unrelated events tenuously linked through painstaking investigation by a career police officer charged with solving the mystery of several murders with no apparent connection. A fast paced intense series of deaths held together by a complex storyline and several three dimensional characters all attempting to do the right thing : the odds hugely stacked against them in favour of corruption in the echelons of power. A nerve wracking intensely violent conclusion where the battle between good and evil is complicated by the massive grey area in between. Totally different from anything I normally read but found unable to put down until the last page. Many thanks to author, publisher and Netgalley for this hugely entertaining ARC.
Navigating the pages of this novel was both a rewarding and challenging experience. The main character's captivating attitude added a layer of magnetism to the story, making it a read that was undoubtedly worth the effort.
The protagonist's strong personality and determination breathed life into the narrative, ensuring that even the most intricate political discussions remained engaging. Their journey was a testament to resilience, and I found myself thoroughly invested in their growth.
However, I resonate with the sentiment of confusion stemming from the extensive cast of characters. The multitude of individuals with their roles and motivations often blurred together, creating moments of uncertainty. Perhaps further development and differentiation among the characters would have alleviated this issue.
Despite this, the novel's potential was evident. The futuristic military and political elements introduced a level of complexity that enriched the world-building. While challenging to fully grasp, they added depth to the story and transported me to a vividly crafted future.
In summary, this book boasts a compelling main character, an alluring attitude, and a plot that delves into the intricate realm of politics and military affairs. Though the abundance of characters occasionally muddles the narrative, the novel's strengths overshadow its weaknesses, making it a valuable read for those who relish multifaceted tales.
Intriguing plotline made me pick up this book and I'm really glad I did. Brilliant read. Taut thriller involving murder, plot and counterpart. Their detective work and political intrigue. Highly recommended.
An excellent thriller.
Armans bus is cancelled and he had to get a later one turns out it could the best but of luck he had that day, specially when he stumbles on a dead body on the beach.
A fast past thriller, Arman was an interpreter in Iraq who witnessed a horrific incident and was given protection in the US. But others haven't given up looking for him. And it's cost him heavily.. Now there are others paying the price to protect him how many lives thats the biggest question.
As with most great Thrillers there are some nasty characters and some interesting this is no exception and it is a great thriller I loved it and hence the 5stars. There are innocent victims not all life there lives but they pay a price so the other question is will they get redemption for their pain. The answer isn't resolved to the end with plenty of twists in-between.
So you won't know what's happen next the characters are not boring this is a read that's more than worth while. As I said I loved it I hope you will to.
The story begins with Armani’s bus not coming and do him being later for his morning beach swim. Once there, he discovers a dead body and sees two men walking away who appear to be military, He phones the police and two detectives get involved with the case which seems linked to Arman and an event he witnessed whilst living in Afghanistan, A reporter called Sally gets involved when a mysterious and heavily secured thumb drive is sent to her. I found the first half of the story strong and it raises a lot of questions about the use of private military groups in the US. The second half involved a lot of bodies and an ending I wasn’t sure I rated.
Along with another reviewer I'm going to join the "unpopularity train". Extremely disappointed in this book. I was so looking forward to it. Sounded exactly the thing I would love to read. Sadly it didn't work out.
There were far too many characters all chipping in which made it very confusing. The plot became increasingly far fetched . The writing style was odd- I'm trying really hard here to write a convincing thriller. And the names- Catherine Wheel? Really?? There were also lots of phrases that I just did not understand. What is a wit? Apart from someone with a capacity for inventive humour. What is popping an Adoil? Why should wearing "real gator (alligator???) loafers mean that you are unlikely to be able to pay for your children's education in a private school? Having to google every few pages is very distracting and when you don't find any answers you begin to lose interest in the book. I really liked Arman as a character and I also liked a line at the end that says "Hating someone is like drinking poison and hoping they die".
Clearly the author has had accolade after accolade and I'm the odd ball. It wasn't for me but clearly it will do very well so as we say, nae bother
This detective based thriller, set in Virginia, is very well written, has good characters and the story line moves at a fast pace. Fans of Harlen Coben or Jeffrey Deaver should enjoy this book.
This was a powerful read with an action packed start and a blazing extremely clever finish. Different to anything I have read before, I requested this book as it seemed intriguing. I really wasn’t disappointed.
