A good read from Isabelle Broom. Honor visits her father in New York for the summer and ends up with a lot more than she bargained for when she agrees to join him in the Hamptons. Recommend summer book
Honor goes on holiday to The Hamptons with her father.. He is a famous author and she wants to win a story competition to gain his approval. By chance she meets a famous actor coming out from a shop, and he finds her totally refreshing. It gives you some insight into the privacy concerns of the rich and famous and also the wonderful places they go,
Pure escapism. I love Isabelle Broom''s writing style and her characters are so vividly drawn
I really enjoyed the story. The characters were really well written and you felt like you could know them, the plot worked and the whole thing together kept you hooked in.
A very typical book; boy meetings girl and we all lived happily ever after. A nice read, nothing pacey; but enjoyable.
My Thanks to Netgalley and publishers Hodder and Stoughton for an ARC of this book in return for an honest review. I requested this because Isabelle Broom has long been one of my favourite authors of this genre and I have read all her novels. I was disappointed with the previous book and I’m afraid, even more so with this one, which is a pity since I was looking forward to it. Girl meets boy in a beautiful, famous setting. There really is little more to it than that. It’s very obvious that the author has been there and her descriptions of the place are realistic and occasionally beautiful, but as for the rest, it frequently drops to the banal and unbelievable. There are two main characters and a small cast of cardboard cutouts in the background. Topics such as celebrity status, the power of the press, and social media are covered. I’m afraid that I don’t care.
Written in the first person, it’s about emotions rather than actions and plot. The whole book is about the growing affair between the two main characters and the influence of outside forces and characters on that affair. Whilst this is one hundred percent escapist, there still have to be some elements one can believe in, but they were lacking here. The tale is reminiscent of stories in Women’s Own magazine that I used to read in my Mother’s copy as a very early teenager but with more explicit sex nearly sixty years on. Some may enjoy this, but I’m sorry, not for me.
Isabelle's books are always a joy to read. I felt immediately deposited into the life of Honor and her Summer trip. I loved her journey as she battled with self belief, love and overcoming the fear of letting her father down. A really interesting read that i struggled to put down! Delightful summer read.
Honor lives with her mum in Cambridge but spends every summer with her famous writer father in New York. Apart from this year when they decamp the The Hamptons. On her first foray out on a rickety old bike she bumps into a very hairy man. She’s trying to write her own book to show her dad she can do it too!! It’s turns out he’s an Oscar winning actor. But he’s being controlled by his minders. Honor’s dad is not as nice as he could be. But everything works out in the end. A delightful book
Every year Honor spends a holiday with her Dad
Staying in New York shouldn't be too bad!
However, he's a top selling author and busy, too,
So together they don't have much to do.
This year is different, there's someone else there
And a home in The Hamptons they're going to share.
Exploring Honor didn't expect to be knocked down
Or for the man who did it to be well renown!
A new friend, a new team, a new chance,
Their banter could be the start of romance.
Whatever it proves inspirational, too,
And gets Honor writing going anew.
Is this the time for her confidence and writing to flow?
Keeping a diary will help her, too, you know.
But there's also betrayal and mischief in store
That'll test any chance for love they might explore.
A story of families, friendship and trust
Where being true to yourself is a definite must.
Learning to do the best for yourself and not others
Is something that more than one discovers.
This contemporary romance involves celebrities who
Find fame is not always a dream come true.
For my complementary copy, I say thank you,
As I share with you this, my honest review.
A gorgeous summer read. I loved the settings of the Hamptons and New York and felt I had been transported there. The perfect book to lose yourself in this summer
I have literally travelled the world with Isabelle Broom, well in a literary sense I have anyway as her books are set in such beautiful destinations all around the globe.
Despite loving all of them I think this was one of my favourites. I was excited to read this book from the moment I saw Isabelle was on a research trip in the Hamptons and she was in Montauk where the brilliant TV series The Affair was based.
Honor had a difficult relationship with her father made even more awkward because he was a famous action author and she an aspiring romance author. When she goes to visit him for the summer they go to the Hamptons and that is when her adventure begins. Her cycle ride is brought to an abrupt stop when she crashes into the extremely hunky Cellan who says he's a stunt man. The meeting with him inspires her to write although she daren't show her father because of his previous criticism.
As she and Cellan keep bumping into each other they develop a friendship which for various reasons isn't easy for either of them as they find it hard to trust people.
I loved all of the exploring of the beautiful area as Honor finds her way round and the fun days on the beach and in the hotel. They eventually discover that someone cant be trusted and I felt so sorry for Honor when the public find out who she is and make horrible comments online and she is accused of something extremely hurtful. It highlights the toxicity of social media and of someone trying to live their life out of the public eye.
This beautiful slow burn relationship was a delight to read about and I just loved everything about it. Isabelle Broom at her very best with this perfect summer read.
Such a delightful summer read - what's not to love about a story based in New York and Cornwall - my two favourite places.
Thought that the main characters were great, such different personalities with a couple of twists for good measure. Communication is the key and somehow, they were great with the written word but perhaps not the spoken one.
Its a 5 star from me, looking forward to more work by this author.
A very easy, enjoyable, escapist summer read.
Honor has a strained relationship with her dad - she longs to be a writer and her dad is a successful author and she always feels a disappointment to him - “none of my father’s novels ever had a sales trajectory line that did not go straight up”
Honor decides enter a writing competition and visits her dad in America for some advice.
She joins him on a beach holiday in the exclusive Hamptons and bumps into Oscar winning British movie star, Cellan.
She has no idea how famous he is and a developing holiday romance starts.
Both help each other to achieve their dreams and see their self-worth.
Loved the insight into writing and how to get published and the hindrances of fame and fortune
Thanks @isabellebroom @hodderbooks & @netgalley for the eARC
I’d like to thank Hodder & Stoughton and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read ‘The Beach Holiday’ written by Isabelle Broom in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.
Honor dreams of being a successful novelist to impress those who think she’s failed them, especially her father JB who is himself a talented author and her ex-boyfriend. Her friend Jojo reads details of a competition asking for people to write a bestseller that’s based in New York and London, and as these are special places for Honor who better to enter than herself, especially as JB has invited her to stay at The Hamptons for the summer. Could it be the backdrop for Honor to write her best novel ever?
Isabelle Broom has the ability to describe locations that make me want to be there and ‘The Beach Holiday’ is no exception. It tells of the relationship between a daughter and her father who’s been absent for much of her life. Add to that the budding relationship between Honor and Cellan, an English actor popular in the US with a private life that’s in turmoil, and you find yourself with a novel that’s perfect for reading on a warm sunny afternoon and preferably on a beach.
This is such a lovely summer read.
Honor’s ambition is to be a writer, a successful writer. Her father is a mega successful author and she visits him in the New York, when he decides to spend some time in the Hamptons.
Honor wanting to spend time with her father, to get some validation on her writing, she is sadly pretty much left to entertain herself. Whilst out one day, Cellan crashes into her whilst she is riding a bike whilst rushing out of a store, little does she know that he is a major movie star….
This lovely romance looks at friendships and poses the question on how do you maintain a relationship with a celebrity, about the intrusion of the press and social media, but also about self confidence, having faith in yourself.
Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for my review.
“Every good story needs a strong opening. Mine was the letter box.” From this strong opening, which made me smile, I enjoyed every moment of the time which I spent in the Hamptons with Honor and Cellan. I think that Honor and I would be good friends. She hates housework, would rather read instead. That sounds very reasonable to me! Would-be novelist Honor spends some time each year with her father usually in New York. They’ve always had quite a difficult relationship and he has been largely absent from her life. I have to say that he didn’t endear himself to me throughout the book. This summer, he invites her to join him at a beach house in the Hamptons, playground for the rich and famous. When Honor literally bumps into film star Cellan in the street, they soon form a bond despite moving in quite different worlds. Much of the conversation and quips between them made me smile a lot.
The problem with reading an Isabelle Broom book is that I always want to go to where she has set the book! Her books really make for escapist reading and I enjoy travel vicariously with her characters. The Hamptons with its huge beachfront villas and gorgeous beaches sounded so idyllic. A real glimpse into how the other half live!
If there’s one thing this book has made me certain of is that there’s no way I’d want to be famous with all the attention and lack of privacy that comes with it. And I certainly wouldn’t want to be dating a celebrity and under the scrutiny not just of the mainstream media but every Tom, Dick and Harry on social media. Poor Honor! When she met Cellan and their friendship began to grow, she had no real idea what she was letting herself in for. Even though she knew herself that who they were when they were just together themselves was different from the public persona – he an Oscar winning film star, she the daughter of a best selling author – it must have been such a shock to see how a relationship in the public eye would play out and how it had to be managed by publicists who didn’t always necessarily have their clients best interests at heart.
The Beach Holiday was just so easy to read, uplifting and such good fun! What more could you want from a beach read? Another fabulously entertaining read from Isabelle Broom. I can’t wait to see where she takes us next!
Another excellent book by one of my go to authors. Great locations and characters - loved how writing books featured heavily in the story. Would love to see this as a film too
Thanks to the Publisher and Netgalley for an early review copy.
I loved reading this book.
It’s set in the beautiful Hamptons. Honor’ visits her father, who isn’t in touch with her through the year much, as he wants her to make him proud. He is a successful author, and Honor too wants to get published.
But he belittles the way she writes as well as the genre, romance.
But when she makes friends with a well known actor, her father is very happy, but she’s not sure why or what it means for her.
I recommend this book.
I love an Isabelle Broom book and this one is another great holiday read.
Life in The Hamptons sounded perfect for the summer and just what Honor needed to work through the questions in her life. She was an interesting character- full of self doubt she hid behind the jokes, so it was lovely to see her loved for herself and blossom into the confident person she deserved to be.
Wow what an outstanding book this is, I read this book over a week ago and I am still thinking about it now
if you want a book to read where you can forget about everything else going on in your life and get absorb into the hamptons lifestyle and fall in love with Honor and Cellan and there amazing story this book tells it all
I wish that this amazing book is made into a film as it is soo good
Although the very first line of this book drew me in, I groaned inwardly when I realised this book had a celebrity protagonist, because it’s a trope I don’t generally get on with. However the setting was son wonderfully drawn I thought I would read on for a while, if only to learn more about creating a sense of place from a writer at the top of their game.
I am so glad I did. After their initial meeting the characters, Honor and Cellan, have real depth and I found them very believable, so I was increasingly drawn into their story. I knew there would be up and downs, ins and outs until they reached their HEA, but this is a romance novel after all. A very good one too, and the perfect book to devour from your sun lounger or on the plane to your perfect holiday destination.
