I received an arc of this title from NetGalley for an honest review. A funny book about a unicorn who pretends to be a horse to better fit in.
I love books like this that are playful with the plot. The illustrations are super cute. I'm not sure who wouldn't want a unicorn as part of the story.
I think children will enjoy this book as you can’t help but root for the unicorn and laugh along the way. Good illustrations too.
We're seeing this construct more often now in picture books: the text starts with the narrator telling us explicitly what we won't find within the pages. Almost immediately the book is interrupted by a cheeky character determined to disrupt the plan. Of course, if the narrator tells us there are too many unicorn books and thus our book will have only cowboys, we're bound to have a unicorn intruding. The rest of the book follows a predictable pattern, with the unicorn and it's pug friend trying to sneak into the story and the narrator becoming increasingly frustrated. We know what's going to happen but it doesn't really matter. This style of narrative can be very appealing to a kid's sense of humor as it relies on disguises and wild excuses. The illustrations are exaggerated and expressive, making it a lot of fun to look at. This book would make an excellent read aloud for a mixed audience primed for a laugh.
I accessed a digital review copy of this book from the publisher.
This book is a story without a story book. It follows a unicorn and a pug as they attempt to be a part of different stories where unicorns are not wanted.
A unicorn story or is it…well not your typical one anyway.
My daughter loved this and the brilliant artwork.
Who needs another unicorn book? There are already too many of them. Instead, it is time for a nice book about cowboys. But it would be better than ever if there was a unicorn in it. But no. No Unicorns in this book!!! Or are there???????? This was fun. The book is the unicorn, pug, and narrator talking, or arguing back and forth about what the story is or should be. The illustrations are just as fun as the story and there will be kids that want this book read over and over and over again.
Who wouldn't want a unicorn in their book? That's what this unicorn and his adorable dog friend want to know. It seems this book wants nothing to do with unicorns, but maybe it will change its tune after unicorn has a say.
I adore Fred Blunt's art and this book is hilarious. That unicorn and pug! What a pair they are. Little readers will love their cheeky antics and the narrator's growing frustration!
The narrator just wants to tell a cowboy story, and there’s no place in it for Pug or Unicorn. But they are determined to be the heroes, even if they have to write their own story to do it.
A book about refusing to blend in when you were born to stand out, full of richly coloured illustrations.
An interesting book with great graphics! The storyline itself was not overly involved but my toddlers enjoyed reading it with me.
Welcome to the Wild West, where there are plenty of cacti, and golden sunsets for riding off into, but NO UNICORNS! (Or pugs, for that matter.)
If you hate unicorns (and pugs), then this is the book for you, as there are certainly none of them to be found within these pages.
(Wink, wink.)
This silly read should reduce children to squealy, giggly puddles.
Brilliant - unwanted characters argue with the narrator/author.
Ha! I love this sort of book, though I must say they are easier to read in your head than out loud.
The author/narrator tells us we are in for a fantastic story of drama and adventure in the Wild West - yay! We meet a cowboy and his steed... but wait... a Pug and a Unicorn? The narrator can't have this! But the characters aren't happy to be written out - can they compromise? Does nobody out there want any more unicorn stories anymore?!
Great narrative style, a fantastic model for showing children how convention can be played with, words and ideas toyed with, and how writers can create any sort of story just how they like them.
Blunt's distinct illustrative style is obvious and sly (loved the unicorn's eyes brimming with tears and the wonderful disguises). The story itself is original and very funny, both for parents and children. Even slightly older children will find this very funny.
For ages 3 and above.
With thanks to Netgalley for providing a sample reading copy.
THIS WAS SO MUCH FUN. I was laughing while reading this. It was short, sweet, adorable, and I just loved it. And kids will absolutely eat this up and laugh along just like I did! PLUS the illustrations were just fantastic.
My unicorn loving 4 year old adored this book - she was in fits of giggles and love the illustrations. As the parent reading, I wish it had a little more to the story, it seemed rather abrupt.. but I would still recommend for all the unicorn and pug loving littles in your life!
Thank you to Quarto Publishing Group – Frances Lincoln Children's Books, Happy Yak and NetGalley for this ARC!

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an E-Arc copy of this novel.
Unicorns are still having their moment, aren’t they? This latest addition is a quick read that is funny for kids with adorable illustrations. It reminded me a little of “Nibbles” which is also adorable. I wish “Unicorn Not Wanted” had a bit more of a story or would have at least peppered some facts into the pages (in the way “Nibbles” does) because while it was fun and silly, it had little substance. I did like how the Unicorn announces that she isn’t made to blend in but to stand out but since the sentiment didn’t apply to her pug friend, it felt a little one note. Overall, a cute silly story that kids will enjoy for the laughs and the pictures.
Thanks to NetGalley and Happy Yak Hardcover for the advanced copy so that I could provide an honest review.
This was a really fun read that had my 4 year old giggling. The illustrations are bright and amusing and I liked the flow of the dialogue, as sometimes these kinds of stories can be a little bit difficult for me to read aloud. I was able to have my unicorn and pug voices but still keep continuity of the story with the actual narrator's words and not get confused or lose any semblance of a plot.
Overall, we will definitely look for this one as a library checkout after its publication date.
Unicorns NOT Wanted takes a no-unicorns-allowed stance on story telling. But try telling a unicorn and her pug sidekick that!
This cute book offers colorful illustrations, and a pair of fun interjecting characters. I wish there was more to the story, but overall anti-unicorn readers (and even some unicorn fans) will enjoy the humor and engaging illustrations.
Beautiful illustrations. Bright colours. Cute little story. Who doesn’t love a unicorn. My little girl certainly does
