Oh I’m a little bit in love with Vera Wong and her wonderfully blunt interference in everything. I actually want her to come and interfere in my life and love me and feed me whilst being very suspicious of me 😀
This is such a lovely book. While it is definitely a murder mystery, it’s the cosiest kind filled with love, food, tea, suspicion and friendship.
You’ll love it, another Thursday murder club type novel. It’s out now. Go get a copy.
Thank you to NetGalley and Harper Collins audio for the opportunity to listen to this audiobook in return for an honest review.
This book was super fun! How could you not fall in love with meddling, sweet, hilarious Vera. The characters really showed how we are all flawed but deserve forgiveness (except maybe Marshall). Vera had me laughing along, and I was really rooting for the relationships being built.
I loved this book! The characters were so well developed. The mystery was a bit complex but the ending wasn’t disappointing- happy ever after - with a few added extras.
Sometimes a murder seems to be the right thing, even if the murder was wrong, the impact on the world is a positive thing.
Everyone needs a Vera in their life - she’s the matriarch of all matriarchs.
I listened to this as an audio book thanks to NetGalley and publishers and for the narrator gave the story a great boost with her voices, accidents and pace.
Excellent easy read!
This cosy mystery, told from different points of view, is an enjoyable read; although the greatest strength of the story lies in Vera herself. I have no idea if Vera's character is a true depiction of an elderly Chinese maternal figure, but I am assuming so based on the Author's heritage and that makes me want to meet a Vera in real life. She is larger than life and quirkily lovable, as are the cast of supporting characters. This light hearted story is entertaining to read, but I would especially recommend the audio version, narrated by Eunice Wong, who brings the characters to life and gives them authenticity. It's not the most compelling mystery, but the characters more than make up for that. Many thanks to NetGallery and HarperCollins UK Audio for allowing me to get a copy of the book.
Vera runs and tea shop and she loves to keep up to date on current trends despite being in her sixties. When she finds a dead body in her tea shop she decides to investigate the death herself as she knows she will do a better job than the police.
This was hilarious and I loved it. As soon as I started this I knew I was going to enjoy this. I loved Vera and the author's writing had me laughing out loud. There is a mystery element to this book but this is really light-hearted and overall a really enjoyable read. I would highly recommend the audiobook as it is really well narrated.
I really like this author's books and her stories never fail to make me smile.
A cozy murder mystery that works with a slow buildup and detailed sideline stories. The main protagonist is an Asian granny who fits the outline of an Asian mom so well, I felt I am back home 🤣. The book felt homey and light read. I wouldn't really categorise this as a thriller but surely a good murder mystery.
I may recommend this to people who enjoy a slow-paced book with cozy vibes and an granny who is difficult to say no too. But for those of you who only want to stick to the point and not loiter in the side lane and speed up things - this might not be the one for you.

Everyone should have a Vera Wong in their life.
Sure, she'd occasionally drive you crazy, but the pay off of friendship, food and excellent detecting skills would be worth it.
An absolute charmer of a book, that is warm and funny, despite most of the characters being suspected of murder.
I've not come across this author before, but now I'm hoping there's more Vera out there in the world.
She makes me want to go visit China Town to find a real life tea house.... and I don't even like tea .
I absolutely loved listening to Vera Wong’s Unsolicited Advice for Murderers by Jesse Sutanto. It is excellently narrated by Eunice Wong who really brings the book to life.
One morning Vera finds the body of Marshall Chen on the floor of her Tea Shop in China Town in San Francisco. Vera is convinced Marshall has been murdered, and before the police arrive she begins her own investigation. She grows frustrated that the police rule the death an accident. And so Vera becomes an amateur sleuth…..
I don’t think I’ve come across a detective quite like Vera and I completely fell in love with her. She is a tour de force but delightfully so. Charmingly, her foray into criminal investigation is based entirely on everything that she’s learnt from TV crime procedural shows like CSI and Law & Order! She’s completely unique in that she cooks up a storm, winning people over with her home cooking and her plain talking, and makes true and lasting friendships along the way. I defy anyone not to be won bowled over by Vera!
I hadn’t read any book by Jesse Santano before this and will certainly seek out her other books.
Huge thanks to NetGalley and the publishers, HarperCollins UK Audio, for the e-audiobook in exchange for a fair and honest review.
When I saw the blurb for this and I saw the owner of the tea shop wakes up to find a dead man in the middle of her tea shop in China town, San Francisco and she then turns detective - I knew I wanted to listen to this audiobook! Now I haven't listened to any of this authors books which I know are very popular but now I have listened to this I will be seeking them out because Jesse Sutanto has created the most incredible lovable character in Vera Wong. I love her sassy unstoppable attitude and her great humour and I think this makes her a great detective. This audiobook is charmingly narrated by Eunice Wong who gives a stellar performance. She really brings Vera to life. Ultimately this is a great entertaining read and although it is about murder it’s actually uplifting! Thank you to Netgalley and Harper Collins.
