Thank you Netgalley and Angry Robot for the book sample.
Though this sample was a brief two chapters, I was very much intrigued. This book has been on my reading list since I saw the hardcover version at B&N. The front cover is beautiful and highly effective at capturing interest. This book likely would appeal to readers who enjoyed The Hunger Games. The author incorporated the world building into the story line seamlessly, and I didn’t feel like I was being pulled out of the story. I can’t wait to get a physical copy to finish the book.
Thank you Netgalley for this sampler on Ledge.
This book hooked me from the very first page. The world-building and plot within just the first few chapters were fascinating and I need more! The characters' interactions and thoughts felt very real for their situation, and I am so excited to read more!
thank you to netgalley for the advanced copy of ledge. this was just a sampler but i found a copy of the whole book and enjoyed it. We follow a young woman who has been born and only lived on a fridge ledge of the known world to her community and slowly got picked off by winged creatures and discovers the world is not just the ledge shes lived on. this was an interesting book the main character was strong but also seemed to be left wondering alot.
I would be interested in reading this trilogy based on these advanced chapters I got to read. The world building I picture is very much The Wall from GOT and has elements of Hunger Games being that food, rations, goods, and necessities are dropped from the sky. I cannot give a five star review based on just two chapters, but I am intrigued to read this in the future.
The sampler is two chapters, really short but does the job. It gives off Hunger Games vibes, because they offer villagers to be thrown in the Ledge. And pines is like their status, the more you have it the more you're rich; Kinda weird but tolerable. As of the writing, it was okay. It hooked my interest just right, hoping to read it completely soon
“the truth is that they are just two shades of the same loneliness, friends in commonality, holding each other through the storm”
thank you for the first two chapters! Ledge starts off so enthralling that i’m so excited to read the rest of the book. Since it is only two chapters, i can’t really say much about her writing and if it will continue being any good, but i’m excited to see where it goes.
The first two chapter of the book differently brought you into the world and differently made me want to read more
Thank you NetGalley for access to this sampler. I have been really looking forward to the release of this book and reading the sampler just solidified my interest! I want to find out more about this community and how they came to be living in such a dangerous place! Will definitely read the full book now!
Very interesting sampler! It was short, so tough to comment too much on the writing/story beyond that I’m intrigued! The premise certainly seems like something I would be interested in. The comparison to Holly Black and Ilona Andrews made me curious to see where the story goes from here. I will definitely check it out when it releases! Ledge releases on June 27, 2023. Thank you to Stacey McEwan, Angry Robot, and Netgalley for a free sampler in exchange for honest feedback.
A very interesting start to a book I need to read.
The story is beautifully written and draws one into what appears to be a world of eternal ice.
As I said, I need to read the whole story.
Safe to assume i've already ordered the book after reading this sample because I need to know what happens. Just in the first two chapters i'm already eager to learn more about this world and why it is the way that is. I've been seeing this book all over my social media and it's understandable why, the writing is captivating and draws you in. Very eager to read the rest
While this story seems like it would appeal to many readers, I am not sure I am one of them.
The sampler was intriguing and began with a very dark tone and intriguing story, but unfortunately, I did not enjoy the writing style. It is very much a personal preference, but it felt slightly too poetic for me. This may be a book I pick up in the future, but for now, it is not high on my list.
“She’d watch their blood absorb into the mosaic at their feet and call it art.”
The first half of this book captured me with a premise I hadn't yet read about, which made me initially really interested in this story. After the 50% mark it felt like only 10% of the book was story development as it was filled to the brim with sex scenes, which isn't what I came into this book expecting or wanting. I am not adverse to sexual content within books it doesn't bother me, but I was led into believing it was going to be void of that with the first 50%, for the rest of it to feel like a fantasy erotica novel.
However, McEwan's writing is raw and authentic, and she does an excellent job of conveying the sense of loss and pain that Dawysn experiences throughout the book. The character development is impressive, and readers will find themselves empathizing with Dawnysn's struggles.
Overall, "Ledge" is a powerful and moving novel that tackles difficult subject matter with grace and sensitivity. McEwan's writing is top-notch, and the characters are well-drawn and believable. This is a must-read for anyone who enjoys literary fiction that delves deep into the human psyche. Ending redeemed itself slightly and secured a 3/5 for me
Wow. 2 chapters wasn’t enough! I need to buy this book and find out more ASAP. I was hooked from the first paragraph.
What happens next?! While I have seen this book being shared by other creators before, I had never read it, but now after reading these first 2 chapters, I promptly went to Amazon and bought the first book. I don't know why I didn't think "Ledge" was meant a physical ledge, like on a cliff or mountain. I really liked the pacing of the first 2 books, and how there isn't an info dump, we find out bits and pieces organically while hearing Dawsyn's thoughts and her interactions with Hector. I also liked the relationship portrayed between them -- it was realistic. They're lonely. They're friends. They want comfort. It doesn't have to be anything more. I also really appreciated how the author allowed Hector to have and express his feelings of grief. No toxic masculinity here! Again, two chapters was NOT enough and I will be finishing this book within the next 24 hours. What a tease!
It was an enticing 2 chapters.
I definitely want more than two chapters though. Not enough to see much, but enough to show it has great potential!
Beautifully written first 2 chapters. I am a huge fan of Raven Kennedy and SJM and similar writers and even the first two chapters here have so much to offer. Great set up of the world and a twinge of romance, harsh determination of the FMC, and some paranormal/fantasy aspects! I was honestly hesitant at first because I loath the way “Dawsyn” is spelled, but this book seems like it definitely be worth it and then some! Can’t wait to read the whole thing!!
Such a start to the story, I was hooked straight away, I can't wait to get a copy of the full book read it as soon as possible!
Thank you to NetGalley, Angry Robot and the author Stacey McEwan for the sampler of this novel. All opinions are my own.
The first two chapters of this book have me very intrigued. I had feelings reminiscent of those felt when reading The Hunger Games ages ago, which in my books is a positive. I will definitely be adding this book to my TBR. Excited to read on!
I am currently giving this a 4/5 star rating as a I am very interested to see how this story progresses and it certainly seems to have the potential to be a 5 star read for me.
wow, this was SO well-written. mcewan truly knows how to create a setting and make it paint into readers' minds perfectly. i can tell the full-length version of this dystopian fantasy novel is going to be absolutely riveting, and i can't wait to get my hands on it! dawsyn is such an entertaining character and i'm quite curious to see where the author takes her.
