While Ledge has an interesting premise, I fear that this short sneak peak has done nothing to encourage me to read the full version when it comes out. The writing style feels a bit jilted and self important, It was less than 25 pages long so I can't judge too harshly, but the main character does little to draw my attention, and the world seems underdeveloped for the amount of description. Don't think I'll buy it, but maybe I'll give it another shot if I see it available at the library. Wouldn't waste a hold on it though.
I don't know why, but it gives Hunger Games vibes. I can't give a full feedback over a small sample, but the story is catchy and leaves you wanting for more. I'd like to read the full version when it's out, even not being a fan of third person narratives, I feel like it lacks on personality traits from both main characters and side ones, I don't feel as connected as when it's first person. The writing it's a bit, I don't know how to explain it, but, it's not my favorite.
I picked this book up at Barnes and Noble recently, so I was excited to see this snippet on here! Just from the first few chapters, the storyline seems like it will suck you in. I'm excited to see what the rest of the book brings!
The snippet was too short to give an accurate feedback, but the little I read was phenomenal.
I'm definitely intrigued and wonder what will happen to Dawsyn later in the book. Stacy's writing is incredibly good, and makes it easy to fly through the pages.
I'd seen 'Ledge' floating around on the internet and was interested in reading it, but I've been bitten by BookTok and BookTube hype before. This sample allowed me to confirm that McEwan's writing definitely confirms the hype and that I'd enjoy this book. Can't wait to pick it up!
Interesting introduction to the world of this series. I found the prose to be a bit stiff, a bit flowery…. just slightly unnatural. It does take you out of the story a bit. Still, I might be interested enough to pick up the rest of the book and try it out. I want to know more about the background plot, the Glacians, and the chasm, but I wasn’t particularly taken with the main character yet.
This was enjoyable little snippet! A nice introduction to the world, though I wish it was a bit longer. Two chapters isn't much to go on, but my main impression was a "Hunger Games but it's really cold" type vibe, and you can't really go wrong with that. I'll likely pick up the full book at some point.
I had the privilege of reviewing Ledge before it's release, so seeing this sampler published in the lead-up to the sequel's release was exciting!
Ledge was one of my favourite reads of 2022, and I love the hype it's getting, especially from the author on her social media, which is brilliant.
This sample provides just enough to reel the reader in and encourage them to read the entire book. Obviously, it leaves you wanting more, but that is the intention behind it.
I honestly cannot wait to read Chasm and definitely re-read Ledge before its release!
Wow. This book immediately pulled me in. Hunger Games meets “Winter is coming”. (My GOT fans will understand”
I would always recommend checking your trigger warnings but I feel safe saying that any reader would enjoy picking this novel up! The sequel is set to release in September of this year and I’m beyond excited to see the story continue!
It was just the 2 first chapters of the book but how tensed I already am! I have the full book on my shelves and I really need to read what's coming next! The writing is so good and the world seems really interesting... so soon I'll pick up that book so I'll learn the whole story;-)
This sample has left me intrigued enough to pick up the full book; however, the writing style leaves something to be desired. I think there's always a give and take between story quality and writing quality and with Ledge, I am very interested in the story and what happens when people are taken over the chasm but feel disconnected from the characters due to the third person narrative. The more I reflect on the sample, the more I wonder if the emotional disconnect with Dawson (she feels cold) will slowly change as she develops or moves to a different location (perhaps warmer?).
A world so vibrant I felt as if I was there. The author does a beautiful job bringing the reader directly onto the Ledge. My only disappointment I wish I had more.
I echo fellow reviewers here on NetGalley about the difficulty of reviewing a book with just a couple of chapters on hand, hence 3 stars for now, but I appreciate the sampler and look forward to the rest of the story. I follow Stacey McEwan on TikTok (as one should, she's hilarious) and was pleased to hear her first book was getting published. I'll admit that the summary of Ledge didn't sound super exciting when I first heard about it, but after reading the sampler, I think it's a promising start. Dawsyn reminds me of Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games and the idea of a selection isn't really that unique anymore, but Stacey's writing was sufficiently engaging and quick-paced so the two-chapter introduction to the book didn't feel like an info dump. Chapter 2 ends just as the reader might wonder what the Glacians really look like, how Selection goes, and who is going to be introduced next. Congratulations to Stacey!
This was only a small sample but I liked what I read. The writing was good and the plot sounded interesting. It made me want to read the rest of the book!
I wish this was more than part of two? Chapters. It’s hard to give an honest review of a story with only the beginning of the story.
⭐⭐⭐⭐
I would definitely be picking up this book. The sample left me wanting for more.
Thank you netgalley for providing an exclusive sample.
Having an exclusive sampler copy allowed me to read the first two chapters of Ledge. It’s hard to judge off of twenty five pages but so far I’m impressed. I was getting Hunger Games era vibes and haven’t gotten to enjoy that genre in awhile. Dawsyn seems like a woman who’s just done with her not so ideal situation and is hoping for a better life. I’m intrigued to read the rest of this book and can’t wait for the release!
While the writing style was good and the plot set up was interesting, it was hard to make a final decision about the book based on just two chapters. The pace was quick, and I enjoyed meeting the self-sufficient survivor Dawsyn, but I wish there were more pages to explore the character and the storyline. Despite this, I am intrigued and could be convinced to continue reading.
2 star with the possibility for higher rating perhaps. I will say it’s very difficult to give a review on 2 chapters, I wasn’t intrigued with the storyline or characters, again 2 chapters isn’t much to go on, but the characters felt flat to me, could that be the way the author was trying to portray the emptiness that the characters felt? Possibly. But there wasn’t enough of a spark that I just couldn’t wait to get the rest of the book to read.
I have been following Stacey McEwan on TikTok for a long time, and to be able to get a glimpse of this book was absolutely amazing.
I am hooked, and beyond ready to read more.
