Will is having 'life problems' and he worries about everything!
Worrying about his elderly dog dying, and whether his wife is happy and he's settled into the mindset that he is old - so he's all but given up trying anything new - because he is old!
When his wife gives him an ultimatum which ends up with Will leaving the home and moving in with his aging famous rock star dad - Red - Will's life is turned upside down.
Red is determined to make up for the time that they have been apart - but Will doesn't make this easy for Red and Red doesn't make is easy for Will.
Some laugh-out-loud moments from Spalding - a nice and easy read.
I got an advanced copy of this book via NetGalley. The actual book is out in June. Having previously read 2 books by Nick Spalding I knew this book would be amusing. The premise of Old Boys really appealed to me being a fan of Rock Music. When I started the book I have to admit the main character came across as somewhat annoying. It's seems Nick Spalding has a gift for writing annoying male characters. Imagine if you will Hugh Grant playing the lead. Having said that once Red his father is introduced the book takes on so much more colour, depth and fresh air. I loved Red and I kept imagining Bill Nighy in this role (probably inspired by his role in Love Actually). His live for the moment and to the fullest attitude really pushes his son through moments and events which had me at times actually giggling out loud! The book builds up really well I have to say and took me on an emotional ride of annoyance, amusement, sadness (yes I also had tears in my eyes) and satisfaction. I was going to give the book 4 stars but the last 80 or so pages made it a 5 star for me. Any book who can conjure up that range of emotion frankly deserves it. The best book by Nick Spalding I have read and now I wish they would turn it into a move hopefully featuring Bill Nighy 🙏 😀 Highly recommended for fans of music 🎶
I really enjoyed this alot more than I thought I would when I started it. This book has heartfelt grief and heartache that comes across the page and sucks you in. I highly enjoyed this.
I just reviewed Old Boys by Nick Spalding. #OldBoys #NetGalley

Pleased to say that Nick Spaulding has done it again, one of the most reliable authors around, he has once again delivered a thoroughly enjoyable read
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I wasn’t too sure what to expect, as I haven’t read anything by the author previously. This book had some incredibly serious, thought provoking moments. It also had some hilarious make you roll your eyes at the characters moments. It was a great balance. The message of grabbing life by the balls and not giving into fear is one we all need to hear from time to time.
If there were 6 stars available then that’s what i would choose, I cant rate this book highly enough. I absolutely fell in love with both Red and his son Will from the start. One minute i was happy then sad the entire way through. The joys of the older generation of fathers and sons bonding was just a joy to read. But what these boys got up to was something else!! They did actually learn a great deal from each other and gained a deeper understanding of why they behaved like they did. The author wrote like he was one of those characters, it felt very real. A completely Laugh Out Loud book with a beautiful heartwarming ending which should be read by all. Loved it!!
Thanks to Amazon Publishing UK and NetGalley for allowing me an advanced copy to read in exchange for an open and honest review. As always, my reviews will also be posted on Amazon, Goodreads and Waterstones and interaction on Facebook and instagram where possible.
Adore this author and read most his books. This book was such a pleasure to read, such a beautifully written, atmospheric book , everything about this book is just so perfect and beautiful, the writing, the characters, the world building and the story. I was so ecstatic at how good a read this was and it completely blew me away. Thoroughly, highly and wholeheartedly recommend this to everyone and can’t wait for more.⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
A winner from this tried and proven author. I wasn’t sure if I would be able to relate to the characters as well as if I were a man, but I found myself completely engaged in the story and characters. The author writes in a way which makes me laugh, even when the topic seems tragic - and I kind of like that!
Hilarious and heartfelt is exactly the right way to describe Old Boys by Nick Spalding. I enjoyed the way Will and Red's relationship developed, gradually revealing why Will was behaving the way he was with his wife and in life. I would recommend.
When Will realised he’s getting old and the turmoil of home life for Will, he is left to go and stay at someone’s house who walked out on him and his family many years ago, full of comedy, comfort, joy, heartache, and love this book is a warming read
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing this book in exchange for an honest review.
Nick Spalding knows how to write a comical and touching story. This book would make a great movie.
This book has many lol moments, even when a sad event is happening.
Fun, light read.
