Yet another fantastic title from Cassandra Jules Corrigan and Jessica Kingsley Publishers. Thank you so much for an eARC of The Gender Book, I really enjoyed it.
While this is a picture book, I would say it would be more suitable for children 8+ - simply because of the amount of information in the book and attention spans. It can definitely be read with younger children as it's laid out in a very easy to understand manner, with several examples and a glossary at the end. I learned a lot from this book and it has helped me to broaden my understanding of my own gender.
The drawings by Jem Milton are colourful and eye catching and so wonderfully diverse! We have images of people of different races, body shapes and sizes, disabilities and, of course, different gender presentations. It fits very well with the text and explanations.
I'm definitely considering getting a copy of this book when it comes out so I can have a hard copy in my personal library.
This was a great book for discussions and so we could check our terminology. It was a great way for my child to see others like them.
Thank you netgalley for this arc in exchange for an honest review.
This wonderful book creates a clear and comprehensive overview of the fluidness and diversity of gender. Though it's aimed and marketed for children, I believe it would be a fantastic addition for readers of all ages. This is a great guidebook for anyone questioning their gender or for allies who wish to understand the proper terms to use for their friends and family.
Despite being LGBTQ+ literate, there were some terms that were new even for me. Terms like 'gendervague' for the specific cases of neurodivergent gender questioning people was a refreshing and essential addition to my vocabulary.
I will be suggesting this book to everyone I know!
The Gender Book by Cassandra Jules Corrigan is a fantastic children's book about gender that includes transgender topics. It's a clear and informative read that covers a wide range of gender-related topics in a concise and detailed manner. I appreciated the author's friendly tone and accommodating approach to explaining complex concepts. I recommend this book for parents and educators looking to introduce children to the topic of gender and transgender issues.
The book that was reviewed is the advance review copy (ARC). Thank you NetGalley and to the publisher for sending this book for review consideration. All opinions are my own.
Amazing! I loved it! The kind of book I wish would have existed when I was a child. I appreciate that the book does not dumb down the topic but allows the reader to really understand what it means. Illustrations are beautiful and inclusive will absolutely be purchasing in the future
This book really excited me because I've been looking for a book like this for ages. One that explains terms with pictures that can entertain children. Whenever I review children's books, I look for a child's opinion of it. I read this to my niece, who's only 4. She always has questions about me and this kind of stuff. She was only entertained for a few pages and when I asked her if she liked it, she shook her head. I knew it might be a little too old for her age group and non-fiction books aren't very popular with her, but she definitely learnt a thing or two. I'm definitely using this book when she asks me questions.
Now onto the things that I liked. I loved how each time a new topic/label was explained, there was an example of a person who used the term. I loved how it acknowledged that some words were 'big' and always explained what they meant. The gender spectrum it included was huge - it even included me. Plus, in the sex section, intersex people weren't left out for simplicity's sake.
Overall, while it didn't hold my niece's attention for very long, it's an amazing and very educational book. I will definitely use it in the future!
This book explores and explains a wide variety of gender identities in clear and simple terms. The illustrations are diverse and there is a good balance of didactic explanation and individual experiences shared. An easy companion to The Pronoun Book.
While this is not my favourite format for LGBTQIA+ explainers, it does what it says on the packet and it does it very well.
This book will be helpful for teachers/librarians/parents to teach these concepts when they aren't necessarily part of or close to the Queer community. The glossary of terms in the back will be super helpful for everybody. This book will help children (even older people) understand how they're feeling so they can learn to express them selves.
I think this is going to be a great book for older elementary to younger middle school kids who are in the stage of life of really understanding their gender identity. As it is dense in some places I wouldn't recommend it for younger children as they might struggle to grasp some of the bigger words and longer passages.
I absolutely loved this one. It presents an impressive amount of information about gender in a way that makes it fun and informative rather than overwhelming or confusing. I'm 35 and I still learned a lot from this and I can't wait to purchase this to help teach my son about gender.
This was a very informative book, but a little dense in places. It feels like it was targeted towards older elementary schoolers and their caregivers.
I really enjoyed this book. It is a timely read that should be in every classroom, every library, and every community centre. It gave a thorough explaination while not being preachy. It gave examples which made it clear. I would use it in my classroom. I think it is a very important subject that teacher's, and families should discuss so as to have safe places for people and have open conversations.
This was a cute and easy to follow picture book about the variance of gender and some non-binary gender identities. The art style was simple but lovely. I think it would be great for a lot of younger kids learning about gender. I would recommend this book for anyone with elementary aged kids as a great starting point to learning about gender diversity and non-binary identities.
I do wish they hadn't said that assigned gender at birth is based on chromosomes. Most people do not have their chromosomes tested at birth or at any point in their lives, so this is rather misleading. Doctors assign a gender at birth based on what they think best fits what is between the baby's legs.
ARC from NetGalley, thank you to the publishers!
This book doesn't come out until August, but I'm going to post this review now because I will forget by the time it needs posting.

This is a fun, light-hearted children's nonfiction that explains in simple terms what the difference is between someone's biological sex and their gender identity. It also explains that someone's gender identity and gender expression can look different too.
~
It has a glossary at the back with a range of terms, mostly things that weren't covered across the book, as any terms that came up within the book were explained at it went.
~
It's aimed at young children to help them understand that people might look a particular way but that they might not identify in a way that matches how they look.

It was all written in language that was simple and easy to make sense of. But it also used specific terms and identity labels. I think it struck a good balance of being complex enough that it was thorough in explaining many variations gender identity, while still being age appropriate for that age group to understand.

Thank you to NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
The Gender Book is a great resource intended for children, but I learned about various neo-gender identities myself. Some of the language may be above its target audience, but overall this book should help kids understand more about themselves and those who are different than them.
This was a cute and informative book about gender identity. Although it's a picture book, the information/vocabulary does lean older. As a former teacher and social worker, I could definitely see using this in group with elementary and middle school aged kids to do an intro to gender identity with them and then doing an activity. The book also has a suggested activity in the back as well. I really liked that this book included neurodivergence in relationship to gender, definitely makes this book even more inclusive and educational. I would have liked the examples of different people to be a bit more full/complex, they could have added more to the definitions. I also think there was a bit too much emphasis on AFAB/AMAB. But overall, this would be a great addition to a collection about gender and identities.
Thank you to the publisher and net galley for the advanced reader copy.
Thank you to NetGalley, Jessica Kingsley Publishers and Singing Dragon for the advance reader copy.
I wish I had this book growing up and throughout childhood. It’s such an easy and week explained way of showing gender and the difference with sexuality and gender.
I learnt a lot from this book, especially terms for various gender identities. I would recommend this everywhere. I think a lot of people find it hard to explain these things to children and having an easy access resource such as this would be a great help.
Thank you Cassandra for writing this book; and widening everyone’s knowledge on gender.
I truly do not think that words can describe how amazing this book is. I myself and nonbinary and a relatively active member of the LGBTQ+ community and I learned SO much!
This book is meant for children but I truly want to give this book to every single person in my life. I will be buying MULTIPLE copies and giving them to friends and family.
The topics were so well exclaimed, the words were defined in ways that were crystal clear with absolutely zero judgement and the illustrations were respectful and easy to understand.

Thank you so much to the publisher and NetGalley for the advanced copy.
Although this is definitely has more advanced content, it is a fantastic book to explain to children how gender identity and gender expression works!
This book is a great educational tool for anyone that wants to learn more about gender. It contains a lot of information.
Ready to have a conversation about gender? Then join Ellie and Casey as they take readers through this illustrated nonfiction guide on pronouns, intersex, transgender, gender dysphoria – and euphoria! – genderfluid, genderflux, gendervague, and many more. Readers meet individuals who identify in many different ways. While the picture book format lends itself to young readers, this book is appropriate for anyone looking to learn and understand gender. The most impactful part of the book is the inclusion of Sadie, Amanda, Cam, and all the others who bring to life gender.
