Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an e-arc of this book.
This was a fun romance book, that would be perfect as a beach read or to pick up on a summer holiday. There was quite a lot of depth to the story, with the main character having dyslexia and talking a lot about her struggles with this in her life, as well as how it impacted her relationships.
The element of the story I most enjoyed was the sibling relationship that was fostered. As half-siblings with a big age gap, the two didn't have a close relationship before Sam went to watch him for the summer, but it was really wonderful watching them grow closer, and knowing how much they both wanted that relationship with one another.
This is an easy summer read with a neurodivergent female main character and a male librarian.
Easy escapism but check trigger warnings as some deeper topics mentioned.
I read this whilst on holiday and it is definitely the perfect book for that as it is an easy read that you can pick up and put down. I wasn't overly keen on the neurodivergent storyline if I'm honest. I felt it was often a token gesture and was shoehorned in, the story was lovely in it's own right. This made me struggle to like the lead character. I did find though that other chara ters helped me through and made me want to find out how the story ended and that ending did not fail.
Another easy to read and lighthearted book for me. Something about the summer time makes me want to read books that I don't have to think that hard about and Summer Reading was a great pick for this criteria.
I really appreciated and liked the dyslexia representation in this book. The stereotype in this kind of story is usually that you have a bookish female and a book adverse male, but that was flipped on its head. Sam's dyslexia meant that she had closed herself off to reading before appropriate options were introduced to her and I really liked this thread of the plot. I also really liked Ben's plot of searching for his father. I got quite invested in this and was hoping for the best outcome.
Unfortunately, the romance between Ben and Sam fell a little bit flat for me. I didn't feel the magic spark and I wasn't super fussed on if they did/didn't make it. when it came to character relationships, I was more intrigued and warmed by Sam and Tyler's sibling development. The two of them getting to know each other and learning to love each other was so sweet.
Although the romance didn't do it for me, there were other things in this book that did keep me engaged and I had a good time with it. Cute little book, in a cute little setting.
This was such a lovely and enjoyable read. I absolutely loved the dynamics between Sam and her little brother, I felt this one on a very personal level as my youngest brother and I have a 10 year age gap between us, however unlike these two, we have always had that strong bond but the teenage years are definitely hard to navigate because you get very little from them! Sam and Ben were such a joy to read about, their chemistry was right there from their first meet and only progressed throughout. Ben's story had a lot of depth to it and I really enjoyed following the mystery of where his birth father was. This is the perfect Summer read that portrays dyslexia with care and respect not only to Flo but also to all readers and is filled with heart-warming and some-what happy endings.
A perfect summer read!! It was easy to get into and I loved the dyslexia rep!! A cute romcom with layers that I think would be enjoyed by many!!
A lovely story about romantic relationships, family relationships and gorgeous vacation vibes. You can’t go wrong with a hot librarian 😍
Oh I really enjoyed this book! It has definitely got me out of my reading slump!
It was a slow start at first and I found myself forgetting to pick it up and feeling a bit bored, but after about 20% I started to really enjoy it and started really loving the characters. I did feel confused about the dyslexia talk, as being with someone and knowing many people with dyslexia I have never know anyone to treat dyslexic people like it was described in the book. However, I understood Samantha’s frustrations in relationships and I did feel for her.
Overall, I did really enjoy this book. It was a light and easy read and I enjoyed the writing style.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for this ARC.
I’ve realised another trope I love is when two people meet on a flight and, later on, they’re reunited — so I was made up when this formed the beginning of this read.
It sees two MCs with different views on lots of things coming together to complete one of their passions.
It’s a bit of a slow burn but it does build into quite a love story.
It would, ironically, be perfect summer reading.
This was a cute romcom between a bookish male character and a dyslexic female chef character, who has never enjoyed reading. Give me a bookish foodie romance any day and I'm a happy gal. I loved both the main characters and their witty banter when together.
I really enjoyed this. A perfect summer read (ba-boom) and really easy to get into. Loved the library back story and all the supporting characters that give a bit more interest to a really sweet storyline.
I’ve read a few books about neurodivergent characters recently so I was intrigued about this one.
I liked especially that the author had put dyslexia at the forefront; the text was dyslexia friendly, no words were cut midway though with a hyphen at the end of a row and she didn’t use italics but bold text for emphasis instead.
I found this a little slow to start but once I got into it I found it was just was I needed i between the thriller-fest I’ve been having.
The usual roles were reversed in this one - a bookish guy and an unbookish (dyslexic) girl.
The relationship between Sam and Ben was sweet and I liked how he had her back and supported her throughout.
I was expecting any steam or spice so that came (no pun intended!) as a pleasant surprise 🌶️
There were a few ups and downs between Sam and Ben but in the end I was pleased with the outcome ☺️
I wanted to like this more and felt that there was potential in the storyline, but I was frustrated at points and left feeling that there could've been more.
There is clearly a theme about dyslexia. It's great to see neurodiversity becoming more 'mainstream' in contemporary fiction. However, I felt that the author used Sam's dyslexia as her entire personality and I was frustrated how many times it cropped up as a barrier for what she couldn't do, rather than thinking more broadly about how to manage or overcome, e.g. audiobooks and other coping strategies.
This was a perfect book for summer! Really enjoyable and I loved the sunny setting. I thought it was heartwarming and very sweet. Highly recommend for romance fans
Definitely an enjoyable read, although it felt a bit insta-lovey in places, which isn't something I'm personally a fan of. Great exploration of Samantha's dyslexia, and showed just how important the distinction is: listening to audiobooks IS reading! The family aspect was also great, especially the relationship Samantha builds with her younger brother Tyler. The writing was easy to follow, so I'd definitely pick up more books by Jenn McKinlay.
Thank you to Jenn McKinlay and Netgalley for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I did really enjoy this with some great characters, good storyline and a fantastic setting (I really want to visit Martha's Vineyard)
Too much was made of the dyslexic storyline though, mentioning it when it wasn't necessary. One conversation in particular just wouldn't happen!
That aside it is an enjoyable holiday read
First off kudos to the author and publisher for making this book so much more accessible to those with dyslexia by changing the font and instead of using italics use bold font instead! More books should be doing this!
This was such a fun, cute and incredibly romantic book that I ended up flying through. I wish I had a physical copy because it was such a well written romance and I love seeing different representations!
I also really liked the side plots to this story and felt like all the characters were really fleshed out! I cannot wait for the next book with Em!
Thank you so much to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Sam, a chef, agrees to come home to Marthas Vineyard to keep an eye on her teenage half brother whilst her Dad and step mum go travelling. Ben is is the local museum director and when Sam meets him there is a mutual attraction between them.
I love to learn new things in a story and this book delivered. It was great to have a neuro divergent character, Sam's dyslexia was explained well, along with ways to help with decoding writing and how dyslexia affects every day life. . Martha's Vineyard was described well from a local's perspective rather than a summer visitor. The step family dynamics were exp.ored well too.
This is a stand alone story and hopefully, Jess McKinlay will return there with more stories
Another good read
Perfect book to curl up with and to get lost in
Will have you hooked from the first page
Thanks NetGalley

"It was a revelation to realize how much I had loved those stories, and how much I had missed listening to someone read to me."
Unfortunately, this was not the story for me. I enjoyed the premise, the ideas of the characters and especially the representation within the story - its enjoyable to see more representation of learning difficulties in literature.
However, I just struggled to get into the story. The dialogue and the flow of the story I found to be disjointed, it didn't flow with ease and the dialogue in particular I found to break my immersion with the story. Whilst it was encouraging to see some representation, I found that some comments about body appearance just didn't fit with the inclusiveness nature of the story - for me, whilst it is understandable that self-doubt and self-depreciation happens, it was slightly jarring to have sudden comments about weight and how hypochondria happens because you're bored.
This book would be good for a reader seeking a fast burn romance and one where you have constant access to all the inner thoughts of the main character.
Thank you to Netgalley for this eARC.
